Much has been said about Pennsylvania noise/sludge/grind outfit Full Of Hell. Much has been said of their innovations (whether you think they are minimal or not is irrelevant) in an extremely watered-down genre that is modern hardcore. One has to be a little bit surprised that a band who prides themselves on their affection for Merzbow and Genocide Organ is attracting kids in Terror shirts to their shows. Nonetheless, Full Of Hell have more than established themselves as one of the leading groups in the new wave of sludge-inspired hardcore along with friends Code Orange Kids.

After first being introduced to Full Of Hell via a youtube link of one of their live shows from a friend, I sat in amazement at the visceral, pure rage that was displayed on screen. The band plays with such intensity and dramatic power that listening to them recorded almost does the band an injustice. Since then I have had the pleasure of seeing them two times, one of which I was fortunate enough to share the stage with these talented lads. (who cares, really??)

A few words of warning, if you are a fan of the more mosh-friendly, sludge aspects of Full Of Hell, by all means, this release may not be for you. If you are, like me, a fan who is more drawn to them for their noise influence (The White Mare, Dichotomy), you will be very pleasantly surprised with this release.

The album is not your traditional noise record, in fact nothing about this is traditional. The album shifts slowly, evolving from harsh to almost somber dynamics, and presenting an unforgiving theme of war, desolation, destruction, and ultimately ugliness. Take the artwork as a heed of warning, this is an unforgiving listen. Unapologetic and proud of the minimalism it proposes, Full Of Hell bring forward their highlights with true artistic integrity - something missing from modern hardcore. Lyrically, Full Of Hell have always been a band that I appreciate, and this release shows how they can take concepts and images found in their lyrics, and create somewhat of a soundtrack to it. Soothing at times, painfully abrasive at others, this volume is a depressing and chilling ride.

With obvious influence from classic noise artists such as Genocide Organ and Throbbing
Gristle, to contemporary commentary via sound from sludge acts like The Body, Full Of Hell once again set themselves apart from their hardcore contemporaries, and remind us all of why they are without a doubt one of underground music's most promising acts.

When skimming through the sometimes frustrating mirage of artists that is the hnw community, it is easy to sometimes become complacent to mediocrity. What few artists in the genre realize is that you can be as brutally harsh as possible, but without variety in the tracks, it will just come across as stale. Column Of Heaven understand this principle and create a short, yet haunting release that is sure to invigorate complete dread to its listeners.

The Canadian outfit, who have toured with the Pennsylvania noise-grind titans Full Of Hell, bring one atmosphere to the forefront on this release, and it is pure grimness. From the artwork to the haunting female and male voices and feedback ambience, this release is depressive noise at its best. The drums, though minimal, accentuate the music excellently, and give a punch that is unexpected but appreciated. And can we give credit to the melodic aspects of this album? Sure to make the hnw elitists enraged that it isn't a Vomir tribute project (thankfully), COH bring eerie tranquility, harsh noisescapes, and melancholic atmospheres in to create a truly interesting noise record. Quite the accomplishment in just under 10 minutes.

Black metal also shows influence on this release. Not in the traditional sense, but structurally the chord progressions here definitely feel as if they could've been on an Agalloch record (not a bad thing). The use of synths also reminds one of Burzum's more ambient material (Dauði Baldrs, Hliðskjálf).

Self-described as "devotional hnw", a spiritual aspect is present on this release. A highly inventive, interesting, and progressing musical experience (yes, all in 10 minutes), Column Of Heaven, bring influences from every corner they can, and leave all hesitations at the door.

True darkness, pure grim.

Let me preface this with some background information: From September to December of 2013, I underwent some extremely trying times. From personal struggles, so the loss of many friends and musical projects, it was a time of horrible confusion and for lack of a better word, gloom.
And in this stupor of isolation and depression, I delved deep into the deeper corners of forums, looking for music which I could find to ease my troubled mind in such a trying time. I found many groups and many albums, but few stuck with my apathetic mind.
Then I found this album, an album that I thought I had heard before. Sure, it was noise. Yeah, it was minimalistic and lo-fi and rough and all of those musical attributes I look for in noise music. But there was something different about this album from the get go, but at first glance, I was unaware of what exactly it was.
I would return to this album religiously; hoping to find out exactly what it was that was "clicking" for me when I would listen to it, but all of these times proved to be unsuccessful.
Then one night, I remember it vividly, I was laying in bed with the lights dimmed. I decided one last time I would put on this album and see if I could finally achieve that level of impact I kept wanting to find with it. And as I listened deeply and focused on the sounds, I looked out of my window and watched the street glisten from the fresh snow falling. And there it was, it clicked. I had reached a level of complete euphoria and happiness. Something I had not felt in months.
The beeps, scratches, fuzzed drones, they all soothed a rambling and frantic mind that was searching for that emotional standstill it had longed for for months.
This album will forever mean something special to me, and will remind me of a time that I found happiness through music in one of the most unexpected of places. While this may not be much of a "review", it is certainly a thank you. So whoever is the mind behind this work, thank you. Thank you oh so much.

In the anonymous and polarizing world that is the modern noise scene, it is often difficult finding artists that truly grab your attention. From the ambient gentle drones of artists like Xela, to the extreme crushing walls of noise of Swallowing Bile, it is often hard for artists (new and established) to create something fresh and satisfying to not only themselves, but a mature listener as well.
I give you LIMBS BIN.
This digital-hardcore-spastic-cybergrind-noise-whatever-you-wish-to-call-it's most recent effort, the brief yet unrelentingly punishing TOTAL ANGUISH is a vicious auditory assault on the listener in the best way one can intend for it to be.
Immediately from the moment you hit play, the listener is brought into a world of minimalistic, electronic rage. The electronics are subtle while harsh, yet they are not overwhelming of the music. They truly bring about a bleak atmosphere of pure youthful frustration and complete anguish (see what I did there??)
Another factor here that is obviously worth mentioning is the vocals. An aggressive lashing and ranting which sounds like the purity of youthful disdain, hatred and frustration, the vocals truly bring this piece (a whopping 5 and a half minutes) another level of intensity not heard of on many noise and electronic/grind releases.
A highly recommendable and addictive listen, LIMBS BIN prove that you can do a lot with a little, be harsh without being overwhelming, and be aggressive without being campy or melodramatic. This release only brings one emotion to mind when listening, and it is total anguish.
