Myrrdin/Cold Air/2004 Demo Review

samedi 10 janvier 2015 à 04:50

This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Myrrdin  which  shows  some  of  his  early  dungeon  sytnth  material  with  the  demo  being  released  in  2004  and  called  "Cold  Air".

A  very  dark  and  atmospheric  dungeon  synth  sound  starts  off  the  demo  and  you  can  also  hear  a  lot  of  ambient  and  atmospheric  elements  in  the  music  along  with  the  first  track  being  all  instrumental  and  the  first  song  is  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  other  songs  range  from  2  to 5  minutes  long.

Synths  are  the  only  instrument  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  they  bring  a  very  dark,  raw  and  epic  sound  to  each  of  the  tracks  while  also  bringing  in  a  variety  of  many  different  keys  with  some  being  soft  and  the  other  ones  having  more  of  a  power  atmosphere.

Myrrdin  created  a  very  raw  approach  to  dungeon  synth  on  this  recording  and  with  his  later  work  he  started  taking  this  style  into  a  different  genre  and  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  lo-fi  sound  to  it.

In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  demo  from  Myrrdin  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dungeon  synth,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Se  Weald  Angelcynn"  and  "Arianne".  8  out  of  10.

Myrrdin/Helebron(Recovered Early Demos 2003-2006/2015 Re-issue Review

samedi 10 janvier 2015 à 04:21

This  is  a  review  of  another  lost  demo  from  United  Kingdom's  Myrrdin  which  shows  a  raw  approach  to  atmospheric  black  metal  while  also  being  experimental and  the  demo is  called  "Helebron"  and  also  has  an  unreleased  track  from  that  time  period.

A  very  dark  sounding  synth  starts  off  the  demo  along  with  a  touch  of ambient  and  after  the  intro the  music  starts  going  into  more  of  a  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  sound  while  also  bringing  in  an  avant  garde  atmosphere  and  when  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  grim  sounding  screams  that  are  kind  of  mixed  down  low  in  the  mix.

You  can  hear  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  throughout  the  recording  and  when  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  remain  true  to  a  raw  black  metal  sound  and  a  good  portion  of  the  tracks are  also  very long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  at  times  and  there  is  also  mostly  instrumental  tracks  along  with  some  drones  being  added  in  on  one  of  the  songs  and  the  last  song  also  bring  in  acoustic  guitars.

With  this  release  Myrddin  kept  around  some  of  the  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  sound  but  also  adding  in  experimental  and  ambient  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  song  themes  revolve  around  Persian  Mythology  and  Nietzsche.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Myrrdin  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  the  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ogre"  and  "Ahura  Mazda".  8  out  of  10.

Astral Blood Interview

jeudi 8 janvier 2015 à 23:18
1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the ep?
Since the EP has been released we have been focused on finding a new live drummer. And just last week we found our guy. Ex (By The Thousands) Matthew Paulazzo. We will also be posting a Drum play through video on YouTube, Facebook and what not within the next week. The play through will be of song (Our Almighty Gaze)

2.Recently you have released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
We kind of touch on both atmospheric and symphonic black metal at times

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Darkness, Death, Astral Projection, Depression, Nature, Magick. I write kind of all over the map. I don't really stick with one formula.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Astral blood'?
Honestly and I don't care if I get crap for it. But Astral Blood is one of my favorite song by one of my all time favorite bands Wolves In The Throne Room.
Their writing has had a big impact on my life and when I was in one of the hardest patches of my life and really going through a tough time their music got me through. So When I started this band up I guess I just wanted to pay some kind of homage to those guys.

5.One part of the band lives in Illinois and the other half lives in Minnesota, do you feel the long distance between band members adds to the atmosphere of your musical style?
Tommy who played guitar on the EP is just a really good buddy of mine. He plays in the Black Metal band called (Sept Of Memnon) out in the Quad Cities(IL) side, and he agreed to just help us out with the recording of the EP. But unfortunately he will not be able to be present as one of the live guitarists in this band.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
This band has yet to play live. At the time we are currently getting the new drummer Matthew up to speed. While rehearsing our first set which will consist of the two main tracks on the EP (Secluded And Forbidden) and (Our Almighty Gaze) along with two other songs!!! that have just been wrote by guitarist Brandon Petree.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
No plans have been made as of yet. The goal is to be ready to play live by March. And yes we will be doing a little touring.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
So far its been super positive. We have had some reviews done from all different parts of the world and none of them have had anything negative really to say. So this makes us all that were involved super happy.

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part off?
I (Andrew) am also drumming in a power metal band called  Noble Beast. Right now we are currently writing and going to be recording the 2nd album shortly.
Joe has his hands in a few other projects such as Nuklear Frost, Adora Vivos and Amiensus who is also working on their 2nd album. Brandon also plays in a band called Burning Bethlehem  which once again are also working on a 2nd album. Then Matthew our new drummer will also be playing in the band (Upon His Flesh).

10.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
We have already starting doing some writing for the 1st album about 4 songs in currently. But at this time I couldn't really tell you when it will be released.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
A few bands that have really had a big impact on me and the music we create would be (Nightbringer) (Wolves In The Throne Room) (Winterfylleth) (Der Weg einer Freiheit) (Watain) and (Borgne) Just a few off top of my head. But obviously there are so many more.

12.Does occultism play any role in your music?
Indeed

13.What are some of your non musical interests?
Writing ! I am always writing lyrics or poems even if it isn't for the band
Other than that I find interests in Occultism, Satanism, Spirituality, Nature, Tattoos
Lots of different things I
 find interests in.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
I just want to thank everyone that has showed their support and anyone that has followed this band since the begging, really thank you so much ! And hope to see you all very soon CHEERS !

Dhampyr/Oceanclots/Acephale Winter/2015 CD Review

jeudi 8 janvier 2015 à 09:11

Dhampyr  are  a  duo  from  Rhode  Island  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  raw  and  lo-fi  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  indie,  art,  Psychedelic  rock  and  shoegaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Oceanclots"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Acephale  Winter.

Acoustic  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  album  and  after  a  minute  the  recording  starts  adding  in  more  of  a  slow  and  raw  style  of  black  metal  along  with  some  high  pitched  screams  as  well  as  keeping  an  experimental  atmosphere  and  they  also  mix  the  clean  and  heavy  parts  together  along  with  some  synths  that  bring  in  elements  of  indie  and  alternative  rock  and  the  vocals  also  bring  in  deep  growls  in  some  parts  of  the  recording.

When  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  parts  are  utilized  the  songs  bring  in  more  elements  of  shoegaze  and  post  rock  along  with  a  touch  of  psychedelia  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  starts  adding  in  more  of  a  depressive  and  melodic  style  of  black  metal  mixed  in  with  the  more  experimental  nature  of  the  recording  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

As  the  album  progresses  a  few  instrumental  tracks  are  added  onto  the  recording  some  that also  stay  away  from  black  metal  and  go  for  more  of  an  ambient  direction  while  some  of  the  later  songs  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  good  amount  of  blast  beats  and  suicidal  sounding  screams  and  cries  and  some  of  the  tracks  you  can  also  hear  a  small  amount  of  clean  singing  being  utilized  at  times.

Dhampyr  creates  an  album  that  still  has  a  lot  of  their  raw  and  depressive  black  metal  roots  and  they  mix  them  in  with  experimental,  avant  garde,  ambient,  indie,  post,  alternative  and  psychedelic  rock  to  create  and  album  that  is  very  original  and  hard  to  categorize,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  cover  suicide,  drug  overdoses  and  mental  illness  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding from  Dhampyr  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal  that  is  very  experimental,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Waltz  of  the  Salivating  Avalanche"  "This  Nirvana  Of  Tangled  Bullets"  "The  Sewer  Epiphanies"  and  "Her  Cloudless  Shoulders  &  All  Our  Smoke".  8  out  of  10.

Ecferus/Prehistory/Fragile Branch Recordings/2015 Cassette Review

jeudi 8 janvier 2015 à 03:00

Ecferus  are  a  1  man  band  from  Indiana  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2015  cassette  "Prehistory"  which  will  be  released  later  on  this  year  by  Fragile  Branch  Recordings.\

Nature  sounds  start  off  the  cassette along  with  some  ambient  and  atmospheric  synths  which  also  show  up  again  on  a  later  track  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  a  minute  melodic  guitar  riffing  is  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  which  also  evolve  into  black  metal  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  some  acoustic  guitars  and  clean  playing   being  used  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

When  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  add  more  melody  to  the  recording  while  still  having  a  raw  edge  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  it  starts  bringing  in  more  of  a  raw  style  of  black  metal  while  also  mixing  in  melodic  elements  along  with  a  good  amount  of  blast  beats  and  there  is  also  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  present  throughout  the  recording  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Ecferus  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  modern,  raw,  heavy,  melodic,  epic  and  atmospheric  while  also  adding  a  good  amount  of  variety  in  all  4  of  the  tracks,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  evolutionary  anthropology,  mythology  and  science.

In  my  opinion  Ecferus  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "One  Who  First  Make  Fire"  and  "Walk  With  the  Feral".  8  out  of  10.
