Goatchrist/She Who Holds The Scrying Mirror/SixSixSix Music/2014 CD Review

vendredi 21 novembre 2014 à 07:23

Goatchrist  are  a   band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  very  raw  form  of  black/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "She  Who  Holds  the  Scrying  Mirror"  which  was  released  by  SixSixSix  Music.

Nature  and  ambient  sounds  start  off  the  album  and  a  minute  later  the  music  starts  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction  while  also  bringing  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  mixing  black  and  death  metal  together  and  then  the  album  starts  bringing  in  a  very  fast  and  raw  sound  that  utilizes  blast  beats  and  high  pitched  screams.

Death  metal  growls  and  melodic  riffing  and  leads  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  solos  have  a  dark  sound  to  them  while  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  melody,  talent  and  skill  and  on  the  later  tracks  the  vocals  get  more  grim  and  diverse  as  well  as  adding  in  dsbm  style  screams  at  times.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  at  times you  can  hear  some  atmospheric  synths  and  clean  parts  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  being  used  briefly  and  in  some  of  the  low  yet  heavy  riffing  you  can  hear  elements  of  doom  metal  and  on  of  the  tracks  also  brings  in  a  very  brutal  sounding  blackened  death  metal  style.

Goatchrist  creates  a  very  diverse  sounding  black  metal  album  that  brings  in  a  good  mixture  of  raw,  depressive  and  melodic  songs  along  with  a  great  amount  of  death  metal  influences  and  the  music  always  keeps  around  a  very  dark  and  evil atmosphere,  the  production  sound s very  dark  and  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Cosmic  Luciferianism  and  Biblical  themes.

In  my  opinion  Goatchrist  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw,  melodic  and  atmospheric  black/death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Through  Flames  We  Invoke  Him"  "The  Four  Horsemen"  "She  Who  Holds  the  Scrying  Mirror"  and  "Inferno".  8  out  of  10.

Sviatibor Interview

vendredi 21 novembre 2014 à 01:11
1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Sviatibor is a solo Pagan Black Metal project I created in November 2013. The main musical purpose of this project is to promote the pagan European heritage and to express my feelings for this land through very personal atmospheres.

2.Since 2013 you have released a good amount of singles, ep's and full lengths, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?

Well, through the 3 albums released during this first year of activity, my sound changed a lot. From Yav To Nav is very cold and dark, desperate, the sound quality is not very good, and there are a lot of effects on my voice. L’Oeuvre De Rod is way less dark than its predecessor, it sounds more positive, with a true atmosphere of passion and contemplation, my voice is still full of effects but there are a lot of spoken vocals. La Foi Des Ancêtres definitely has a better sound quality, it’s way more powerful, there are choirs and strings, and my voice is totally natural.

3.You have released a good amount of material, do you put a great amount of time and effort into writing new music?

Well, to be honest I think I could have spent more time on From Yav To Nav and L’Oeuvre De Rod, but actually I never thought people would be interested in my music, I was just doing this for myself, so I was not very exacting with my work. But I spent a lot of time on La Foi Des Ancêtres and I will spend more on the next album ! Now Sviatibor is a very serious project.

4.Your lyrics cover some Pagan and Nature topics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those subjects and how they are also a part of youe everyday life?

Paganism is definitely something really important in my life. I’m connected with my land, my gods and my ancestors, I can feel this union through my soul, and that’s what inspires me for my music and my lyrics. I want to honor our heritage through my art. And about Nature, well, I’ve always been a great lover of Nature. Nothing’s more beautiful than our motherland in its radiance. And I think nature is a great way to express feelings in a very metaphorical way.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Sviatibor'?

The name “Sviatibor” comes from the Slavic god of the forest. I thought it would be a perfect name for my project and its ideology. Paganism, heritage, and nature’s sanctuary.

6.With this project you do all the instruments and vocals, do you fell it is much easier to write the music you want to play working by yourself then it would be with a full band?

Well, I would not say it’s easier. It’s different. You are definitely more free to do what you want to do when you work alone, and you can dedicate your time to do it and not the time of the people you work with. A solo project is way more personal, but for someone who also work in a band project, I can tell it’s also pleasant to work with people, because when you’re feeling bad about your art, you’re not alone and you can carry on with people.

7.Your last full length was released by Primal Relics Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Primal Relics Records is a young American label created by Nick Stanger and Skyler Gabel. Nick just contacted me when he discovered Sviatibor in order to release From Yav To Nav as the first Primal Relics Records release, but I told him that I was working on a new album so we decided to release La Foi Des Ancêtres. I’m really satisfied of their work and I’m glad to had the chance to “meet” these guys, Nick became a very good friend of mine now.

8.Recently Into The Night released your first full length album on cassette, are there any plans in the future to also release some of your other material on cassette?

Not for the moment, but there will certainly be some other tape release in the future !

9.Last year you released a single that was a Burzum cover, what was the decision behind doing your own version of this song?

Well, Illa Tiðandi is one of my favorite Burzum song. Everybody know that Burzum is my all time favourite artist and I wanted to honor this amazing project by learning, playing and recording this song on piano.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of ambient, pagan and black metal?

Pretty good actually ! I had a lot of support from Syria, Poland, USA, Russia, France, Italia, Germany … It’s a great feeling when you know people enjoyed your work.

10.What musical direction do you see the future releases going into?

The next album will follow the path drawn by La Foi Des Ancêtres. However it will be way more atmospheric, with a lot of keyboards, and a more original and elaborate music. You will know more within the next months ;-)

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

As I said on a previous question, I was mainly influenced by the music of Varg Vikernes, Burzum. All his albums. I’ve also been influenced by movie OST (Star Wars, The Lord Of The Rings, Gladiator …), and by traditional European music. I also listened to a lot of band since I discovered Metal but I don’t think a lot of them really influenced my music.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Lonely wanderings in isolated Nature, Paganism, Role Playing Games, writing and family.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

First of all thank you very much for this interview and your interest, thanks to everyone who’s reading, sharing it, everyone who listen and support Sviatibor … And sorry for my bad English. I wish you a good luck for the next !

mercredi 19 novembre 2014 à 20:53

My  Dying  World  "Mako"  are  a  duo  from  Ukraine  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  album  "My  Dying  World...  and  Life".

Rain  sounds  and  clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  adding  in  heavy  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  and  you  can  also  hear  the  bass  guitar  in  the  background  along  with  the  music  also  bringing  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  they  also  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts.

The  heavy  and  melodic  aspects  of  the  album  bring  in  a  very  dark  and  depressive  sound  and  after  a  few  instrumentals  high  pitched  suicidal  black  metal  screams  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  a  small  amount  of  deep  death  metal  growls  and  at  times  the  music  also  brings  in  fast,  raw  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  and  on  few  of  the  tracks  also  brings  in    samples  of  a  car  crashes  and  hospitals and  later  on  spoken  word  parts  are  added  into  the  music  briefly  and  these  elements  add  more  depressive  elements  to  the  music  which  also  keeps  around  its  raw  black  metal  roots.

My  Dying  World  "Mako"  plays  a  style  of  depressive  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  sticks  to  mostly  a  slow  style  while  also  having  its  fast  moments  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  this  is  one  of  the  better  albums  that  has  came  out  recently  for  this  sub  genre  of  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  depressive,  melancholic  and  apathy  themes.

In  my  opinion  My  Dyinf  World  "Mako"  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  depressive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Crying  Fake  Soul"  and  "Oppressive  Lie".  8  out  of  10.

A  very  dark  and  ritualistic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  chants  and  a  few  seconds  later  grim  whispers  are  shamanistic  beats  are  added  into  the  music  which  leads  up  to  a  more  heavy  and  melodic  musical  direction  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  and  growls  as  well  a s some  guitar  solos  and  leads  that  use  a  great  amount  of  melody,  talent  and  skill.

All  of  the  musical  instrument s on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  is  very  atmospheric  in  more  of  an  early  90's  way  and  the  music  also  mixes  in  the  ritualistic  sounds  with  the  black  metal  elements  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  on  some  of  these  tracks  you  can  hear  the  band  is  adding  in  more  of  a  modern  sound  while  still  bringing  in  the  old  school  Greek  black  metal  feeling.

As  the  album  progresses  there  are  some  more  fast  and  raw  parts  that  utilized  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  being  added  into  the  music  at  times  and  when  the  band  uses  synths  the  music  gets  more  epic  and  atmospheric  and  on  some  of  the  tracks  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  very  powerful  sounding  bass  guitar  leads,  when  we  get  further  into  the  album  the  band  starts  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

Varathron  expand  on  the  occult  black  metal  sound  that  was  present  on  earlier  recordings  while  also  showing  a  great  amount  of  progress  and  moving  wit h the  times  instead  of  writing  the  same  album  over  again  and  the  music  on  this  album  is  very  heavy,  ritualistic  and  progressive,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Kabbalism,  The  Lesser  And  Greater  Kings  Of  Solomon,  Occultism,  and  Left  hand  Path  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Varathron  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kabalistic  Invocation  Of Solomon"  "Arcane  Conjuring"  and  "Delve  Into  The  Past".  8  out  of  10.

mardi 18 novembre 2014 à 23:20

Downfall  Of  Nur  are  a  duo  from  Argentina  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  pagan/black  metal  with  elements  of  folk  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  ep  "Umbras  e  Forestas".

Nature  sounds  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  direction  which  also  brings  in  grim  screams  and  Cascadian  style  melodies  before  speeding  and  adding  in  blast  beats  and  there  is  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

On  some  of  the  tracks  they  music  starts  adding  in  more  folk  music  elements  which  also  bring s in  more  of  a  pagan  and  medieval  feeling  to  the  bands  musical  style  along  with  traces  of  dark  ambient  and  the  band  also  keeps  around  their  raw  black  metal  roots  on  the  following  tracks  and  each  track  sounds  different  from  each  other  without  ever  losing  atmosphere  and  on  the  last  track  there  is  a  brief  use  of  melodic  guitar  leads  being  utilized.

Downfall  Of  Nur  creates  a  style  of  pagan/black  metal  that  has  enough  atmosphere  and  melody  of  the  more  modern  day  Cascadian  sound  while  also  bringing  in  a  good  amount  of  the  rawness  from  the  old  school  variation  of  the  genre  as  well  as  adding  in  touches  of  folk  and  ambient  to  create  their  own  sound,  the production  sound s very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Spanish  and  cover  the  Nuragic  Civilization  and  the  Folklore  of  Sardinia,  Italy.

In  my  opinion  Downfall  Of  Nur  are  a  very  great  sounding  folk  influenced,  atmospheric  pagan/black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Sa  Aurora  De  Sos  Astros"  and  "Umbras  e  Forestas".  8  out  of  10.
