Jute Gyte/Vast Chains/Jeshimoth Entertainment/2014 CD Review

  Jute  Gyte  are  a  1  man  band  from  Missouri  that  has  had  plenty  of  material  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  i  would  describe  on  this  recording  microtonal.  experimental  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Vast  Chains"  which  was  released  by  Jeshimoth  Entertainment.

  The  album  starts  out  with  a  very  dark  and  progressive  sound  along  with  melody  which  also  leads  to  deep  and  grim  sounding  black  metal  vocals  which  also  utilize  high  pitched  screams  as  well  as  mixture  of  clean  heavy  parts  which  brings  in  more  traces  of  experimental  music.

  As  the  album  continues  the  music  speeds  up  along  with blast  beats  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  being  a  dominant  factor  in  the  music,  while  also  bringing  in  a  good  amount  of  weird,  avant  garde  melodies  and  the  album  never  loses  its  progressive  touch  and  at  times  they  bring  in  elements  of  doom  metal  which  takes  the  record  into  an   even  heavier  direction  and  this  influence  really  shows  on  the  last  track  as  well  as  bringing  in  synths  towards  the  end.

  Jute  Gyte  once  again  creates  a  black  metal  album  that  is  very  fast,  heavy  and  experimental  sounding  while  also  showing  that  he  is  still  in  of  the  best  1  man  black  metal  bands  to  hail  from  the  United  States.

  Song  lyrics  cover  mortality,  philosophy,  nature  and  war,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  along  with  all  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Jute  Gyte  and  if  you  like  your  black  metal  heavy,  fast,  progressive  and  experimental,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Endless  Moths  Swarming"  and  "Refusing  A  Heavenly  Mansion".  8  out  of  10.

AanomM/Demands Self Destruction/sadiXmo/2013 Demo Review

  AanomM  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  plays  a  very  fast  and  raw  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  demo  "Demands  Self  Destruction"  which  was  released  by  sadiXmo.

  The  demo  starts  out  with  dark  nature  sounds  before  going  into  a  fast  and  brutal  black  metal  direction  along  with  grim  screams  and  blast  beats  as  well  as  good  amount  of  raw,  old  school  guitar  riffing  and  you  can  also  mid  paced  parts  being  mixed  in  with  fast  drums.

  As  the  demo  continues  the  music  gets  a  lot  more  dark  and  grim  in  the  true  old  school  black  metal  tradition  along  with  drums  which  are  also  the  most  powerful  sounding  instrument  on  the  recording  and  on  the  third  song  they  slow  down  a  bit  and  add  in  spoken  word  parts.

  With  this  demo  AanomM  play  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  and  sticks  more  to  the  truer  traditions  instead  of  following  the  modern  trends  as  well  as  bashing  in  the  heads  of   posers  and  christian's  with  their  raw,  old  school  black  metal  assault.

  Song  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  raw,  dark  and  heavy  sound  with  the  drums  having  the  loudest  sound  to  them  as  well  as  most  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  AanomM  are  a  very  great  sounding  fast,  raw  and  heavy  old  school  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Tthe  Uuntold"  and  Tthe  Ddlusions".  8  out  of  10.

One Master/Live in The Castle Of Quiet/NoVisibleScars/2014 Live Cassette Review

  One  Master  are  a  band  with  members  from  Massachusetts,  Connecticut  and  New  York  that  plays  an  old  school  form  of  black  metal  with  thrash  influences  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  live  cassette  "Live  In  The  Castle  of  Quiet"  which  was  released  by  NoVisibleScars.

  The  ep  starts  out  with  a  live  introduction  and  then  the  band  comes  on  with  distortion  and  drums  beats  before  going  into  a  very  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  sound  and  a  few  seconds  later  grim  vocals  start  to  kick  in  and  they  use  a  mixture  of  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  blast  beats  which  also  leads  up  to  solos.

  As  the  album  continues  the  band  stick  to  an  early  90's  black  metal  sound  while  also  bringing  in  80's  black/thrash  influences  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  riffing  that  has  a  doom  metal  feeling  to  it  along  with  a  small  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  but  they  stick  to  the  more  fast  and  raw  parts  fro  most of  the  recording.

  On  this  live  recording  One  Master  play  a  very  true  form  of  black  metal  that  goes  back  to  the  roots  of  both  first  of  second  generations  and  they  have  a  very  fast,  raw  and  heavy  sound  and  while  it  might  not  be  completely  original  it  is  very  well  executed.

  Song  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw,  heavy  and  live  feeling  to  it  in  the  true  old  school  black  metal  tradition  along  with  the  bass  guitars  being  mixed  down  low  in  the  mix.

  In  my  opinion  One  Mater  a  very  great  sounding  fast,  heavy  and  raw  old  school  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  live  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Cursed  And  Dismal  Mind"  and  "Infernal  Silence".  8/5  out  of  10.

Neige Morte Interview

Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?
SA : Not much actually, we worked on new songs and re-arranged some old ones in order to perform them on stage. We booked a small tour in Belgium/ Holland in mid-February. We’ll keep on working in that direction…at our own speed.
JG: Waiting for the next tour, and composing some new songs.


2.Recently you put out a new album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical direction you have taken on the new album and also how does it differ from your last recording?
SA : To be honest, the direction we took wasn’t planned. Since J.G. joined Neige Morte, the music went more brutal and weird…but we wouldn’t be able to clearly explain why. The possibilities to explore and experiment went crazy as we felt there were no more musical boundaries.
JG: It’s the first recording with me behind the drums although I integrated the band at the end of 2010. HLC (nb: first drummer) had more punk feelings whereas I play more like a metal drummer with double pedals and blastbeats. Anyway, the idea is to stage a dark disturbing nightmare.The music we play actually is the frontal result of the instrumental meeting of SA and me, XT brings the vocals at the end, after adapting his choices and feelings to the musical orientation.


3.Can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical topics and subjects the new release explores?
XT : There is no main subject, no kind of concept but the title “Bicephaale” is about duality in me. And duality in Neige Morte’s music too. A duality you can find in the lyrics. Some are really aggressive and violent (500 jours de haine, Eater of soul), some are more peaceful or appeased (Death shall have no dominion). If there was a concept behind “Bicephaale”, it should be that we are not simple creatures, all black or all white. We are more complex and got to daily deal with this complexity, our inner contradictions and all that things that make we cannot be described with a simple adjective. But violence is present in every lyrics, in a way or another.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Neige  Morte'?
SA : There’s no real meaning, I mean, none that we would have thought about in the first place. After the years, we found loads of meanings that could fit…it depends on the mood. As for the name itself, it obviously came from the Norwegian Nazi-Zombie movie Dead Snow. We came up with this name (our first drummer HLC and me) when we started the band. But there’s no meaning either behind this name, just 2 words that sounded good together. We then translated them in French.
JG: “dead snow” in English, it’s poetry, beautiful, we are geniuses.


5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
JG: A NM’s show is played as one long track. The intensity level we give often makes me forget that I’m only playing music. It’s a 40-minute fear and violence fever.Incubate in Tillburg was great. The Yellfest in Lozere’s mountain in august 2012 was fantastic too.  
XT : We feel ok with all our shows but I’m really proud of the one at the Incubate Festival in Tilburg. Our stage performances are honestly in your face, without any artifices. We don’t communicate with the audience, we just play, give our guts on a plate and that’s all.
SA : Yes that show at Incubate was pretty intense, in front of people who are really into Black Metal…and open minded enough to appreciate what we gave that evening.
As XT said, our performances and pretty simple. Maybe because there’s so much theatricality in Black Metal (and Metal in general) – we feel better with plain simplicity.


6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new release?
XT : We’ll do a small tour in Benelux with Alabaster in February and will play some local shows later. Because of our lives and obligations, we cannot extensively tour. So we give our best at the few shows we do.

7.The new album came out on Consouling Records, do you feel this label has done a lot to get your music out there heard?
XT : It’s too early to tell but the fact you’re making an interview with us is a good sign.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
SA : We don’t really know. We never thought about it I guess and never try to find out about it. I would say open-minded people can like our music…
JG: I won’t say worldwide, it’s exaggerated. Metal can speak to very young people, we don’t. Maybe because we don’t use theatrical accessories. Metal can refer to a type of sound, precise and surgically controlled. In matter of sound we have chosen something very weird thanks to SA and Bruno. From any other openminded metalhead, we have some good feedback.
XT : Some really like it, love the extreme and harsh approach. Some hate it, complaining about that extreme and harsh approach.

9.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
JG: I don’t know for the future but the latest track we’ve composed sounds a little bit more death metal.
SA : I like to believe we’ll dig deeper in this direction we took. Try to make an even more personal music, wherever it may take us.



10.What are some bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
XT : For my vocals in Neige Morte, Leviathan, Attila, Portal, old school Death Metal, Funeral Mist and Swans are my main influences. But bands like Neurosis, Kiss It Goodbye, Napalm Death, Blut Aus Nord, Sixteen Horsepower, Quicksand or His Hero Is Gone are very important to me.
These days, I’m a lot into Beastmilk, Aosoth, Gorguts and Foals.
JG: For Neige morte I was really inspired by Antoine Hadjioannou from Aluk Todolo for the repetitive playing certainly because he is influenced by Christian Vander like me. Today, Staer and Portal have blown my mind. For now I’m waiting for the next Warsawwasraw and Daughters album.
SA : For my part, I’d say my main influences would be Orthrelm, Krallice, Portal, US Maple, Arab On Radar or even The Flying Luttenbachers. And regarding the stuff I listen to, I’d say also Foals and also Autechre, Tool, Sister Iodine, Impetuous Ritual, Jai Paul…



11.Do you have any non musical interests?
XT : Sure we do.  

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
XT : We don’t.

Shroud Of Despondency/Tied To A Dying Animal/2014 Double Album Review

  Shroud  of  Despondency  are  a  band  from  Milwaukee,  Wisconsin  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  which  also  continues  their  progressive  black  metal  sound  on  this  recording  while  also  bringing  in  thrash,  death  metal,  folk  and  neo-classical  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  album  "Tied  to  A  Dying  Animal".

    The  album  starts  out  with  distorted  sounds  before  adding  in  a  darker  and  heavier  sound  which  is  brings  in  a  blackened  feeling  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  powerful  and  melodic  leads  and  then  the  music  goes  for  a  more  fast  and  old  school  black  metal  sound  along  with  high  pitched  screams  which  also  use  death  metal  growls  at  times.

  As  the  album  progresses  you  can  hear  a  great  amount  of  Morbid  Angel  and  other  death  metal  in  influences  being  added  into  the  music  while  also  bringing  in  even  more  melody  and  keeping  the black  metal  sound  which  also  leads  to  a  blackened  death  metal  direction  while  the  focus  is  more  on  the black  side  through  the  first  batch  of  songs  while  also  having  elements  of  thrash  and  progressive  rock  and  at  the  end  of  part  one  of  the  album  there  is  a  movie  sample.  

  When  the  album  goes  into  the  second  part  the  music  starts  going  into  a  more  neo  folk  direction  along  with  a  great  amount  of  classical  music  influences  with  acoustic  guitars  becoming  the  lead  instrument  while  there  are  also  folk  instruments  and  synths  being  utilized  and  the  second  side  is  mostly  instrumental  while  you  can  still hear  a  small  amount  of  vocals  being  used  on  certain  songs  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  samples  and  you  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  finger  picking  and  full  chords  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  As  we  get  more  into  the  second  part  you  can  hear  a  small  amount  of  electric  guitars  briefly  being  mixed  in  with  the  acoustic  parts  along  with  more  vocals  and  spoken  word  parts  after  awhile  and  on  one  song  they  bring  in  a  modern  neo  classical  feeling  similar  to  Death  In  June  as  well  as  bringing  in  an  electronic  guitar  lead  on  a  couple  of  the  songs.

  When  the  album  goes  into  the  bonus  tracks  the  music  starts  going  for  more  of  a  dark  ambient  and  experimental  direction  before  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  black  metal  parts  and  grim  vocals  as  well  as  some  doom  metal  in  the  guitar  riffing  which  also  leads  up  to  melodic  solos  and  leads  and  as  time  goes  on  by  death  metal  growls  are  brought  into  the  music  along  with  more  progressive  parts.

  As  we  got  more  into  the  other  bonus  tracks  they  return  to  a  more  instrumental  neo  folk  direction  as  well  as  bringing  in  shamanistic,  tribal  elements  and  nature  sounds  which  add  more  power  to  these  tracks.

  With  this  double  album  Shroud  Of  Despondency  show  off  2  sides  of  their  sound  with  part  one  being  black  metal  and  part  2  being  neo  folk  and  they  show  a  great  amount  of  skill,  talent,  variety  and  originality  with  all  of  the  songs  they  bring  onto  the  recording  and  on  the  last  track  to  make  a  return  to  black  metal.

  Song  lyrics  cover  the  despair  and  alienation  of  city  life,  while t he  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  as  well  as  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal  and  neo  folk,  you  should  check  out  this  double  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Man  Can  Dream"  "Long  Hours"  "Prominent  Cross"  and  "The  Unrewarding".  8  out  of  10.
