Nefas Terra/Life In Darkness/Acephale Winter Productions/2013 Cassette Review

mercredi 12 février 2014 à 19:55

Nefas  Terra  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  very  technical  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  with  death  metal  influences  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  cassette  "Life  in  Darkness"  which  was  released  by  Acephale  Winter  productions.

The  cassette  starts  out  with  spoken  word  sample s before  going  into  a  fast  and  melodic  black  metal  sound  along  with  blast  beats  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  mixing  slow  and  fast  parts  together  before  bringing  in  a  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  vocals  and  you  can  also  hear  thrash  influences  being  added  into  the  music  along  with  solos  and  leads.

As  the  recording  continues  the  band  stick  a  very  fast,  brutal  and  melodic  black  metal  assault  while  also  adding  in  technical  parts  and  after  awhile  they  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  synths  which  gives  the  music  and  atmospheric  edge  and  they  never  forget  there  death  metal  roots  and  when  they  bring  slower  sections  in  other  songs  the  music  starts  having  an  even  darker  feeling  to  it  and  on  the  last  song  they  bring  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  before  returning  to  a  heavier  sound.

Nefas  Terra  display  a  great  amount  of  talent  with  their  music  and  they  have  a  lot  of  raw  aggression  with  the  way  they  mix  in  fast  and  melodic  black  metal  with  some  atmospheric  and  technical  elements  along  with  death  metal  influences  to  create  a  very  dark  and  heavy  recording  that  has  a  90's  feeling  from  beginning  to  end.

Song  lyrics  cover  darkness,  suicide  and  anti  christian  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  heavy  and  powerful  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

In  my  opinion  Nefas  Terra  are  a  very  great  sounding  fast  and  melodic  black  metal  band  with  death  metal  influences  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Life  In  Darkness"  and  "Suicide".  8/5  out  of  10.

Dhampyr/Withdrawals & Candy Heavens/Acephale Winter Productions/2014 Cassette Review

mercredi 12 février 2014 à 07:44

Dhampyr  are  a  1  man  band  from  Rhode  Island  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  that  plays  a  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal  and  blackgaze  on  this  recording  with  the  cassette  being  called  "Withdrawals  And  Candy  Heavens"  and  was  released  by  Acephale  Winter  Productions.

The  cassette  starts  out  with  a  fast,  raw  and  depressive  black  metal  sound  along  with  suicidal  screams  as  well  as  a  good  amount  of  melodies  and  blast  beats  and  after  awhile  there  is  a  mixture  of  slow  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  good  amount  of  melancholic  sounding  guitar  leads  which  also  lead  up  to  spoken  word  samples  becoming  a  part  of  the  music.

After  the  first  song  which  is  very  long  the  album  goes  into  shorter  songs  and  takes  on  a  more  slow  and  depressive  black  metal  direction  while  also  having  the  melody  of  shoegaze  as  well  as  a  great  amount  of  darkness  and  on  one  song  they  have  a 70's  occult  rock  feeling  coming  out  of  the  synths  and  the  last  track  is  all  instrumental.

With  this  cassette  Dhampyr  bring  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  black  metal  sound  along  with  shoegaze  elements  and  even  with  that  ingredient  the  recording  is  still  a  lot  more  better  than  what  a  lot  of  newer  bands  have  that  use  that  influence  and  this  is  a  very  dark  and  evil  sounding  recording.

Song  lyrics   cover  dark,  depressive  and  occult  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark  and  raw  sound  to  it  along  with  some  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Dhampyr  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal  or  blackgaze,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Charred  At  the  Stake  In  Younger  Times  Than  Ours"  and  "Parliament  Of  Lepers".  8  out  of  10.

Sguaguarahchristis/Der Nacht/2014 Full Length Review

mercredi 12 février 2014 à 03:10

Sguaguarahchritis  are  back  this  time  with  a  new  album  which  shows  the  band  going  into  a  more  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  sound  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  album  "Der  Nacht".

The  album  starts  out  with  dark  nature  and  ambient  sounds  before  going  into  a  slow  depressive  black  metal  direction  along  with  high  pitched  screams  as  well  as  some  deeper  vocals  which  after  awhile  leads  to  a  faster  direction  along  with  blast  beats  as  well  as  mixing  mid  paced  and  fast  sections  together.

As  the  album  continues  the  band  starts  bringing  in  more  melody  and  atmospheric  elements  to  their  fast  black  metal  assault  along  with  the  vocals  getting  more  grim  in  sound  which  also  leads  to  synths  being  added  into  the  recording  which  also  have  an  avant  garde  feeling  to  them  and  there  is  a  great  amount  of  brutality  present  on  this  recording  and  on  the  last  song  you  can  hear  some  melodies  coming  out  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars.

With  this  album  Sguaguarahchritis  bring  out  a  different  sound  than  their  past  recordings  while  also  remaining  true  to  anti  human  black  metal  while  also  adding  in  more  avant  garde  and  atmospheric  elements  this  time  around.

Song  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  on  mother  night,  the  death  and  the  mystery  of  the  infinite,  while  the  production  has  a  very  heavy,  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Sguaguarahchritis  and  if  you  a  fan  of  raw,  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Under  the  Moon  We  Are  Hunters"  "My  Sideral  Journey"  and  "Mother  Night,  Eternal  Labyrinth".  8/5  out  of  10.

Grauzeit Interview

mardi 11 février 2014 à 07:50
1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
L.: Of course! At the moment we are working on our first full-length album, but we have some problems with recording the guitars, so we don't know when it'll be finished.
2.In the last couple of years you have put out 5 releases, how do you feel all of these releases differ from each other?
L.: Each release is on its own, we always do what we want and don't try to fit into anything!
3.A Few months back, you put out a remix ep, can you tell us a little bit more the decision behind it and also are there any plans to do any remixes in the future?
L.: The decision to do that came totally spontaneous as a friend of mine posted on facebook something like "Send me your a capella vocal tracks and I'll do a remix" - I asked Argwohn, he replied "Well, that would be weird, let's do it!"
4.Can you go more in depth about the song lyrics that you have covered with the past musical releases and also how would you describe your progress as song writers over the years?
Argwohn: The lyrics of Tyrannei der Tristesse are just a snap shot of the emotional status we had in early 2012. The feeling of being fucked up and not able to change anything. People write music and stuff to handle their problems - and that's exactly what we did in the past and what we do in the future. We are capable.
5.According to the Metal Archives page, philosophy is one of the topics you cover with your lyrics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in philosophy?
Argwohn: It's a good way to understand the world around you. And it helps to get different points of view. Maybe we get some answers why people suffer from life.
6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Grauzeit?
L.: In german, "Grauzeit" is something like a synonym for "Depression" but the inspiration came up to describe the modern time, like "A grey aeon"
7.I have read that the band has yet to do any live shows, has that changed since the time of that interview?
Argwohn: Though we have a new member, we're still against any live shows at the moment. We are working in the framework of an musician collective, so our main point is creating music, not entertaining an audience.
8.The new ep came out on Self Mutilation Services, do you feel this label has done a lot to get your music out there and heard?
L.: The colaboration was OK, but we had to do all that promotion stuff on our own, like organizing interviews and reviews.
9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of the more darker forms of metal?
L.: Well, it seems there are only two types of people: One love us totally, the other hate us. But the ones that love us, really do that!
10.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
Argwohn: There's not only one direction. We try to carry the cold and distant feelings of modern city life into our music, what gives us the opportunity to work with people from other genres/scenes. Some may say that's too experimental, but we are Grauzeit and we don't care.
11.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Argwohn: All influence comes from life itself, from personal experiences and so on. There's is a lot of cool music out there, but it has no effect on our songwriting. Something we all enjoy is hardcore punk, psychedelic/stoner rock and sludge metal.
12.outside of music what are some of your interests?
Argwohn: Escapism.
L.: Philosophy, Escapism, Drugs, Psychology
13.Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Argwohn: Smoke weed and worship Satan.

Jute Gyte/Vast Chains/Jeshimoth Entertainment/2014 CD Review

mardi 11 février 2014 à 02:13

Jute  Gyte  are  a  1  man  band  from  Missouri  that  has  had  plenty  of  material  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  i  would  describe  on  this  recording  microtonal.  experimental  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Vast  Chains"  which  was  released  by  Jeshimoth  Entertainment.

The  album  starts  out  with  a  very  dark  and  progressive  sound  along  with  melody  which  also  leads  to  deep  and  grim  sounding  black  metal  vocals  which  also  utilize  high  pitched  screams  as  well  as  mixture  of  clean  heavy  parts  which  brings  in  more  traces  of  experimental  music.

As  the  album  continues  the  music  speeds  up  along  with blast  beats  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  being  a  dominant  factor  in  the  music,  while  also  bringing  in  a  good  amount  of  weird,  avant  garde  melodies  and  the  album  never  loses  its  progressive  touch  and  at  times  they  bring  in  elements  of  doom  metal  which  takes  the  record  into  an   even  heavier  direction  and  this  influence  really  shows  on  the  last  track  as  well  as  bringing  in  synths  towards  the  end.

Jute  Gyte  once  again  creates  a  black  metal  album  that  is  very  fast,  heavy  and  experimental  sounding  while  also  showing  that  he  is  still  in  of  the  best  1  man  black  metal  bands  to  hail  from  the  United  States.

Song  lyrics  cover  mortality,  philosophy,  nature  and  war,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  along  with  all  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Jute  Gyte  and  if  you  like  your  black  metal  heavy,  fast,  progressive  and  experimental,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Endless  Moths  Swarming"  and  "Refusing  A  Heavenly  Mansion".  8  out  of  10.
