Opus Inferii/Ancient Mysteries Unveiled/Vacula Productions/2015 CD Re-Issue Review

  Opus  Inferii  are  a  band  from  Brazil  that  plays a  very  raw  and occult  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Ancient  Mysteries  Unveiled"  which  was  re-issued  in  2015  by  Vacula  Productions.

  Dark and  ritualistic  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  atmospheric  synths  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  to  get  a  lot  more  heavier  and  goes  into  a  black  metal  direction  along  with  a  great  amount  of  high  pitched  screams  and  the  when  the  songs  speed up  they  add  in  more  blast  beats and  a  raw  style  of  the  genre  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Morbid  sounding  melodies  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  the  music  also  displays  a  great  amount  of  influences  from t he  90's  second  wave  Swedish  style  of  the  genre  and  in  some  songs  you  can  also  hear  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  being  utilized  and  some  tracks  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  growls  and  all  of  the  musical instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  on  a  couple  of  the  later  songs  synths  make  a  return  to  the  music  briefly.

  Opus  Inferii  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  fast,  raw  and  melodic  and  also  goes  back  to  the  mid  90's  style  of  Swedish  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  yet  heavy  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  cover  Darkness  and  Occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Opus  Inferii  are  a  very  great  sounding  fast,  raw  and  melodic  occult  black  metal  band  and  if  you  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Unveiled"  "The  Hecate's  Veil"  "Nephilim's  Arrival"  and  "Anoit  To  Suicide".  8  out  of  10.

Lifeless/Inner Shouts From A Sad Soul/Vacula productions/2015 Full length Review

  Lifeless  are  a  band  from  Mexico  that  plays  and  ambient  form  of  depressive  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Inner  Shouts  From  A  Sad  Soul"  which  was  released  by  Vacula  Productions.

  Smooth  ambient  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  good  portion  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  on  the  second  track  the  music  starts  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric  black  metal  direction  along with a  great  amount  of  depressive  screams  and  cries  and  they  also  mix  in  the  ambient  synths  in  with  the  heavier  parts.
  Depressive  sounding  melodies  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  some  parts  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  female  vocals  and  the  solos  and  when  also  stick  to  a  very  dark  and  melodic  musical  direction  and  the  tracks  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  cle4an  playing  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  post  black  metal  in the  bands  musical  style  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or mid  paced  musical  direction.

  Lifeless  plays  a  style  of  depressive  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  and  melodic  while  also  mixing  in  elements  of  ambient  and  post  rock,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  suicide,  nature,  wilderness,  depression  and  melancholy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Lifeless  are  a  very  great  sounding  ambient,  depressive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Forgotten  Voices  On  The  Dreary  Water" "Misery"  and  "Painful  Life".  8  out  of  10.

Forsaken Crypt Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Forsaken Crypt is a one man black metal project created and run entirely by myself (Nefareous). It started with the interest in creating true black metal…. something abrasive and in many ways cinematic. A project with pure intentions, not created to please others or fit into a pre existing shape, but to please myself and make music I want to hear, because so much so called “black metal” these days is utter horse shit...

2.So far you have released a demo and you also got a decent amount of songs on your soundcloud page, how would you describe the musical sound of the songs you have recorded so far?

Each song has its similarities of course, but each has its own feeling. When I create the music the focus is on the feeling, the end result rather than the technicality in the making of it. Too many get caught up creating songs that are referential to other metal bands, I strive to create black metal that is conscious of its history, but never treads old ground… I would like to think I am adding something to the medium. There is a certain tension and release in the music.

3.On the demo you had some satanic and occult lyrics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

Anything dark or occult interests me and always has… I am a creature of the night, a misanthrope if you will… I tend to take these inspirations and feed them into my music as much as I can. The individuality aspect of it all is what I respect, strength and individualism.

4.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your music?

Death, nature, evil, vampyric lifestyle & spiritual darkness in any respect are all what I write about. Dying love is something I keep going back to in my lyrics, a woman… someone I used to love… necro poetry.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Forsaken Crypt'?

It is to put the listener in a state of mind so to speak, as well as I when I create the music, the idea of walking into a place you are not suppose to be, a place you are not welcome. Somewhere long forgotten, cursed place cold and grim where you do not know what lies ahead around the next corner…

6.With this musical project you record everything by yourself, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Yes, I am constantly on the lookout to share my music with those who are interested in any way possible… I record everything myself at my place of residence and always have. I fund my own projects and I feel that’s the way it will remain for the better part of my output.

7.What part of Canada is this musical project located in?

Ontario is the province I am currently located in, which is subject to change within the next few years. It’s not particularly known as a place for those who prefer to live on the outskirts of society… almost everyone here who is my age are into obnoxious garbage I couldn’t give less of a shit about. Stupid, pathetic robots of this lame and doomed society.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for label or have received any interest?

The focus of getting signed to a label is not the money of course, I do not do this for money, but since it is something I put my entire being into, it would be nice to get some semblance of recognition from a label of some sort, preferably one with a similar outlook on things as I. So far I have not received any interest from labels, but I have confidence that will change soon enough.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by the fans of black metal that have heard it so far?

It has been widely positive. I have friends and fans all over the world because of my music. They recognize it is true black metal… the intention will always remain the same though, I will always make the music for myself first and foremost and share it with others from there, rather than creating it for other people.

10.Are you also involved with any other musical projects?

I am constantly creating music, whatever I feel I want to create. I have ambient projects as well as experimental ones, one of my others is an experimental metal project called Hammer musik, which is also on bandcamp.

11.Where do you see yourself heading into musically during the future?

Who knows what the future holds, if I have it my way, I would like to continue with this project and really innovate much more with the black metal medium, really do something spectacular and noteworthy, otherwise what the fuck is the point of my existence? I hope to be signed to a respectable, no bullshit, label within the next few years at least. Other than that, continue to improve my abilities and expand horizons.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

The obvious ones are; Burzum, Darkthrone, Mayhem, early Immortal, Thorns, Emperor, Bathory, the ones everyone was inspired by when they first heard them. I really love Les legions noires music, Dzlvarv, Belketre, Moevot and Vlad Tepes. Currently I listen to a lot of music off soundcloud... some great artists and friends are; Raiserdrone, Necroplague, Dark Blasphemer & Mental Flamethrower.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

There are too many weak people on earth these days who take the victim complex… have strength of self… give yourself to the idealism that the individual goat is stronger than a flock of sheep. This world is flooded with too much mediocre bullshit, so if you’re getting into this to reference acts that are already established and tread old ground, just stop yourself now.  Respect and know what has come before and build off of that. Forgotten Horror Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Well, the album was released in Finland and Scandinavia in May and we had a great album release gig and party during Walpurgisnacht in my home town Kuopio with the legendary cult of Demilich! The worldwide release was just a few days ago, so there hasn’t been tons of stuff happening since… I’m doing a lot of interviews, editing the upcoming music video, designing upcoming merchandise and so forth. Busy busy.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

With “Aeon of the Shadow Goddess” I’ve finally made an album that I am 100% satisfied with. I feel that we truly found our identity as a band with this full-length, you know? It’s a conscious step forward on the Left-Hand Path and continuation to Forgotten Horror’s debut album “The Serpent Creation”.

Forgotten Horror walks hand in hand with my own esoteric and spiritual growth and I think you can hear that the songwriting has matured and evolved quite a bit if you compare it to its predecessor.

3.This is the first album to be release in 4 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

While making this beast, I’ve also been active with my other bands. We released our sixth full-length with DEATHCAIN and a debut full-length with JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES. I also play the bass in TRUE BLACK DAWN, we’ve recorded a new full-length and it’s gonna be a killer!

But the real reason for this long time between the albums is that after the first album, I encountered a lot of strange obstacles in my personal life. Immediately after the debut album in 2011, I began making the next album and I was also working with my second Qliphothic initiation. A lot of dream and astral workings related to the Gamaliel Qlipha and its ruler, Lilith.

All of the sudden my life turned basically into chaos. There was so much hardships, financial problems, serious sudden illness within people closest to me, problems with my own health, strange fuck-ups from people working with FH related stuff, and just so much “bad luck” (I don’t believe in bad luck or coincidences) that I was totally getting buried alive under all these things. But eventually, some extremely positive things happened and I managed to struggle through those hardships. But it really made me step back and re-evaluate everything in my life.

I always try to see the positive side of things, so I used all this extra time to polish the material which definitely paid off. So all in all, it’s been a huge process for me and the album release was a kind of rite de passage to let go of this phase in my life and move on to the next. I’m very happy about how things eventually turned out.

4.You label your music as 'Lilithian Black Metal', can you tell us a little bit more about this term?

Well, our guitarist Kennet came up with the term. He is a PhD., an assistant professor and an expert in Tantricism and Western esotericism, and we talk a lot about FH in this context. I agreed that the term suits the band very well since FH has become almost like a band with an entirely “Lilithian” concept.

5.Your lyrics cover a great amount of Occult and Left Hand Path themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the Black Arts?

Sure. For years I was a member in a dark magical organization Dragon Rouge, and the main reason why I moved to Sweden was so that I could be more active near the Mother Temple. Then during the making of “Aeon…” something happened that really changed me as a person. You could say that “seek and you shall find”. I found something that made me realize my own destiny and the changes and sacrifices required to stay true to my own path and thus I left Dragon Rouge. DR was a great teacher for me and I learned a lot about the essence of magic, rituals and how to put theory to practise so there was no bad blood or anything like that. In the deepest sense, that’s what I feel an esoteric organization or a guru is supposed to do; to point out the way for the adept so that he/she can walk into the burning darkness alone.

So you could say that these things are not mere symbolicism or imagery for me, but quite the opposite. I don’t dress like a typical BM dude, actually I don’t relate metal music to real occultism at all anymore, but I live and breathe these things in my everyday life instead. Practise what you preach…

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Forgotten Horror'?

It can be anything, really. An ancient deity, an evil ex-girl or boyfriend hahah, the listener can give a meaning of their own to it. I used to contemplate on changing the name into something more catchy but I embrace the band’s name now. I prefer for my band to have a name with a real meaning for me that’s charged with energy, than something that might sound more cool but which doesn’t resonate with anything, you know?

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Of the FH gigs so far my absolute favorite was the recent “Aeon…” album release gig at Walpurgisnacht in my home town, that show was very important for me. All in all, out of all the gigs I’ve played, the Jess and the Ancient Ones North American tour with KING DIAMOND was absolutely the greatest experience so far. I’m a huge MMA (mixed martial arts) and UFC fan and it was unreal to play at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas where they arrange the biggest UFC events!

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

We have now signed with Incantation Agency, actually both Forgotten Horror and True Black Dawn are in there now. FH is very hungry for more gigs and we’re hoping they’ll book shows for us later this year, in Finland and abroad! Can’t wait to play abroad with my beast child Forgotten Horror, I know we will absolutely DESTROY any festival / venue!

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to the new album by fans of black metal?

I actually don’t know, I live such a busy life that I barely have time to listen to the final album versions of my songs hahah! I’ve read two 10/10 reviews of “Aeon…” which is something that’s never happened before. So I think the response has been good. Of course, I know that there are people who don’t like it but that’s okay. To each his own.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Besides Forgotten Horror, I play in Jess and the Ancient Ones, Deathchain, and True Black Dawn. JATAO will enter the studio depths in a few weeks to record the sophomore full-length, DC will activate again after a hiatus and we’ll start making new songs hopefully this year and we’ve already recorded a full-length with BD and it should be out quite soon…

Kassara plays in many other projects, I’m not even sure which ones. The ones I know are Deathchain (naturally ‘cause I play there as well heh) and BAPTISM, who seem to be playing quite a lot all over Europe and overseas.

Kennet plays also in SATURNALIA TEMPLE and he just returned from a show in Austria. I stayed at his place in Stockholm, taking care of his cat while he was gone.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We’ll just keep on evolving and listening to our hearts. I think this can be heard as even more dynamic material in the future; the fast parts will be faster, slow parts slower, more tempo changes, bigger sound scheme… it’s a neverending progression and we know now where to go with FH.

12.What are some of the bands or musical projects that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I’m a big fan of soundtrack music such as Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar, Gladiator, The Last Samurai scores etc. but the greatest composer ever for me is Ludwig van Beethoven… I just love his piano sonatas and I think his music is the heaviest shit ever made!

I listen to all kinds of music, it doesn’t matter what genre it it. Good music is good music. At the moment I’m having a lot of 80’s hard rock and pop stuff on my playlist.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Hellsteps/Last Moment Of Sanity/Vacula Productions/2015 CD Review

  Hellsteps  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  raw  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album   "Last  Moment  Of  Sanity"  which  was  released  by  Vacula  Productions.

  A very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  has  a  death  metal  feeling  to  it  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  a  few  seconds  later  black  metal  screams  and  growls   become  a  huge  part  of  the  recording  and  technical  guitar  leads  are  used  quite  a  bit  throughout  the recording.

  Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and epic  in  length  and  clean  playing  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  whispers  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  some  of  the  melodies  also  bring  in  a  classic  metal  feeling  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  and  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  at  times  and  they  closed  the  album  with  2  bonus  tracks.

   Hellsteps  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  old  school  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  a  melodic  and  progressive  style  of  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Ancient  Mythology,  History  and  War.

In  my  opinion  Hellsteps  are  a  very  great  sounding  progressive  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Arcana  Malvagita"  and  "Daimonesias  (The  Punishment  Of  The  Gods)".  8  out  of  10.
