Bilesipper Interview

1.      For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?


 


Bilesipper has existed for around one year and seeks to create chaotic raw black metal. However, everything from droning noisescapes to death metal riffs are also present. As long as the product is harsh and evil, then Bilesipper’s musical goal has been achieved.


 


2.      So far you have released a demo and an ep, musically how do they both differ from each other?


 


The demo has a grating atmosphere and droning, repetitive songs, with no fast parts and only minimal vocals. It was intended as a more DSBM-styled release, while the goal for the EP was to create short, aggressive, and more straightforward compositions to show that Bilesipper is not limited to one style by any means. Future releases will continue to expand on the Bilesipper sound. Finally, the demo was recorded with a drum machine, while the EP features live drumming, which added greatly to the aggression and rawness.


 


3.      What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the music?


 


Blasphemy, madness, and plague. This is ugly, violent music, and the lyrics are no exception.


 


4.      What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Bilesipper'?


 


The name just came to me one day and the mental image made my skin crawl – always a good sign! “Sipping” suggests drinking with control, so the name evokes something refined yet depraved; this is a deliberate, measured act, which makes it all the more horrifying. It also is catchy. Nothing wrong with being memorable.


 


5.      Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?


 


This is an old drawing depicting plague victims. Black metal reflects all the bad things in the world, so in light of current events the wretchedness feels especially timeless.


 


6.      With the exception of a few session musicians you record most of the music by yourself, are you open to expanding into a full band or do you prefer to work solo?


 


Yes, it would be great to expand and even play live shows one day. I do enjoy calling the shots creatively for now but would welcome collaboration as long as it adhered to the Bilesipper spirit. The music is the only thing that really matters.


 


7.      Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?


 


I have not received any interest yet but would be very open to hearing from labels. Right now, I am working on gaining fans and spreading the word organically so there is no rush. Bilesipper is still young.


 


8.      On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?


 


I have received positive feedback, which is very humbling and encouraging. I am working on getting more exposure for the two current releases, but I believe for the next step Bilesipper needs to release more music to reach more people. The support so far is very motivating and Bilesipper will deliver!


 


9.      When can we expect a full length and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?


 


No plans for a full-length as of now, but there is a smaller release coming. Drums have been tracked so far. The style will be closer to the EP than the demo, but of course there will be new things as well. A physical release and merch are also two goals for the future, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself. As a musician, I have been focusing on composition and hope to further refine my writing skills in the future.


 


10.   What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?


 


Bilesipper is directly influenced by bands like Immortal, Behexen, Archgoat, Beherit (especially Drawing Down the Moon), Demilich, old Dimmu Borgir …too many evil gems to list, but many European bands from the 90s are a defining influence. I listen to a huge range of music, though; today was Jimi Hendrix and Company Segundo, the day before was Enslaved and Wintersun.


I previously played in a band called Unlucky Theta, which was a psychedelic and progressive groove/sludge metal band, so it is definitely not black metal all the time for me. That being said, Bilesipper is and will remain a black metal project without question.


 


11.   Does Occultism play any role in your music?


 


            No. There is no spiritualism, mysticism, religion, or any other sort of philosophy, belief, or agenda behind Bilesipper. This is ugly music purely for the sake of ugliness.


 


12.   Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?


 


I want to thank Occult Black Metal Zine for taking the time to not only feature the EP but to conduct this interview as well. It is very humbling to have people show interest in your music, and I have nothing but respect for sites like this one that dedicate so much time and energy to keeping the underground going strong.

Amidst Dreams Of Tomorrow Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

There’s not much to know about us, to be fair. The EP was recorded as a two piece project, but we’ve recently been joined by an additional guitar player that will be working with us through future recordings, but to be fair, this project is more about the music and less about it’s members. We all share a love for music and all sorts of creative side-gigs, and have a wide range of musical influences which I’m sure you’ll be able to hear in our EP. This project actually has an interesting story that is worth sharing as well. It all started as a failed (but publicly unnamed) Doom Metal project we were both working on. We wrote songs, ideas, all sorts of things, for over two years, but the chemistry was just not there, and we hit a roadblock. Call it creator’s block, if you prefer. Suddenly, during the summer of 2020, it all clicked, and we both wrote like mad in the span of about a month to create the EP you will be listening to. 

2.You have an ep coming out in February, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

For sure. We’re not huge fans of labels ourselves, because I think people often get stuck on the genre and not the actual music, which is what matters. But since people kept asking, we decided to go with Post-Black / Atmospheric Black Metal. Why? Well, our songs are created with a certain ambiance in mind, to set up a mood. The black metal part kinda comes from the stylistic way we arrange our songs, as well as the overall sound and chord choices. 

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

We both decided to explore the topic of the human experience, what surrounds us, both positively and negatively, as well life and death, and what’s in between those two states. We wanted to capture feelings of happiness and sadness, sometimes in the same song, and take the audience through a journey. This is also why we decided to make “Beached Things” an instrumental experience, as our goal was to let the music breathe and speak for itself.

4.On your facebook page you also referenced 'Oscar Wilde', can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in his works?

We’d be lying to you if we said we’re Oscar Wilde readers and followers, because we’re not. The quote has actually stuck with me (Dod) when my girlfriend was talking about Oscar Wilde and his story, and actually wanted to include it as the description of our work, it simply fits the overall mood and aesthetic of our EP.

“Yes: I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.”

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Amidst Dreams Of Tomorrow'?

Amidst Dreams of Tomorrow was actually the working name for one of the songs that we wrote during the EP sessions. When writing songs, no matter how small they may be, we usually assign them a more or less humorous name and this one just stuck as befitting for where our music was going as a whole. The idea for the band name came from myself and Dod just decided “Yeah, that works!”. As for its significance, I’ve never thought much about it, but it personally fits with the idea of never giving up your dreams and what moves you forward, as without those, you’re dead, either physically or metaphorically. 

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

To tell you about the artwork, we must first tell you about the story about the name for the EP (Beached Things). This actually comes from the game “Death Stranding”, and in very brief terms, Beached Things signifies souls that have been stranded in the world of the living instead of moving on to whatever comes next. That said, we wanted to represent this concept with photography that would be available in our portfolios, and settled with what we have now.

7.The band is an international project, what parts of the world are the band members located in?

We’d prefer not to disclose where we’re from at the moment, as this project is not about the band members, but about the music. We play secondary roles. That said, all three members are currently living in three different countries.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We’re still looking for a label and have sent our EP to several, but so far we haven’t had any feedback. This doesn’t let us down in the slightest, as our goal was never to get a label, but to share our music with the world, which is why the EP is being released for free. Of course we’d be lying if we said a label deal wouldn’t be something we’d consider, but for now we’re comfortable and happy with what we’ve achieved on our own.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of atmospheric and post black metal?

So far the reception has been great, much better than expected in fact! We’ll wait for the official release date to assess the proper reaction, but quite a few people have listened to our music and seem to enjoy it.

10.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

That’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? Well, we’re already working on a full length album as a three piece band and progress has been going on steady so far. What we can advance so far is that we have almost half of the full length written and will continue working on our own pace, so when it’s done, it’s done. We’d say 2022 may be a fair assessment, but it’s still a bit too early to tell. 
As for our musical roadmap, our new songs are a little bit more complex and include some symphonic influences. Not to say it’s a major departure from the EP, because it’s not, but it does sound like a proper evolution of what we’re releasing now. It’s important to note that we’re not adding more instruments or increasing complexity for the sake of it. Our creative process is pretty similar, and it’s just that we’re now more comfortable in our own niche.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

This is definitely a two part question, as we both have slightly different musical tastes. 

Christian - While I’m a fan of Black Metal, I was always closer to it’s symphonic counterparts, like Septic Flesh, Cradle Of Filth for example. I’m also a big fan of video-game and movie soundtracks, and this plays a part in the writing process.

Dod - I’ve always been a huge Black Metal fan, and have dwelled way more into its depressive / atmospheric side. My main influences would definitely include well known projects like Burzum and Agalloch, and lesser known but equally fantastic projects like Unreqvited and A Light in the Dark. Additionally, there two projects I’d like to outline as key influences to my overall creative side: Doom:VS and ISON. Both could not be more different, but both have massively impacted the soundscapes I create when working on a song.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts? 

Christian - I’d like to thank everybody that has been supporting this project and wish they have been enjoying what we’ve come up with. Never let go of your dreams, that’s what keeps you alive!

Dod - As my friend said, just an overall thank you to everybody that has supported and endorsed this project.

Helgrind/Return To Motherland/Black Spark Records/2021 CD Review

  Helgrind  are  a  band  from  Cuba  that  plays  a  very  epic  and  pagan  form  of  Viking  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Return  To  Motherland"  which  was  released  by  Black  Spark  Records.


  A  very  epic  synth  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  pagan  metal  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.


  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  clean  Viking  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.


  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  the  music  also  showing  some  influences  of  the  mid  90's  Scandinavian  era  of  Viking  metal  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  introducing  a  small  amount  of  growls  onto  the  album,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  album  and  a  couple  of  the  songs  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Paganism,  Vikings,  Legends,  Battles  and  Anti  Christianity  themes.


  In  my  opinion  Helgrind  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  pagan  and  Viking  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Song  Of  The  Runes"  "Return  To  Motherland"  and  "Blota".  8  out  of  10.

Naarkas/Slangen/Strange Aeons Records/2021 EP Review

  Naarkas  are  a  duo  from  Denmark  that  plays  a  raw  mixture  of  black  metal  and  crust  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "Slangen"  which  was  released  by  Strange  Aeons  Records.


  A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  crust  punk  direction  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.


  At  times  the  songs  also  get  very  raw  sounding  while  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  briefly  when  the  music  speeds  up  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  samples  as  well  as most  of  the  music  also  sticking  mostly  to  a  mid  tempo  direction  and  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.


  Naarkas  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  raw  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  crust  punk  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Danish  and  cover  dark  themes.


  In  my  opinion  Naarkas  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  mixture  of  black  metal  and  crust  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  'Frossen  jord"  and  "Slangen".  8  out  of  10.

Xibalba/Ah Dazm Poop Ek/Nuclear War Now! Productions/2021 Album Re-Issue Review

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Mexico's  Xibalba  which  continues  the  raw  and  Mayan  themes  style  of  black  metal  from  the  previous  releases  and  the  album w as  released  in  1994  and  called  "Ah  Dazm  Poop  Ek"  which  will  be  re-issued  in  February  2021  by  Nuclear  War  Now!  Productions.


  Shamanistic  and  tribal  style  drumming  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  pre-Hispanic  instruments  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them. 


  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  early  90's  style  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.


  The  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  Norwegian  influences  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  tribal  elements  also  making  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks,  there  are  also  a  few  instrumentals.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Mayan  Cosmology  and  Ancient  Mexican  Culture.


  In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Xibalba  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  old  school  Mayan  themes  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Furor  Antiquus"  Sign  of  Eastern  War"  "Deers  In  The  Mounts"  and  "Horizons".  8  out  of  10.
