Ergotism are a band from France that plays a pagan form of black metal and this is a review of their 2015 album "Notre terre, nos aieux, notre fils et nos morts..." which was released in 2015 as a joint effort between Pesttanz Klangschmiede and Vegvisir Distribution.
Night sounds start off the album along with some acoustic guitars a few seconds later while clean pagan vocals are also utilized at times. Synths are also added into some parts of the recording along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and grim black metal screams are also a very huge part of the recording.
Elements of folk music are also added into some parts of the album while the faster sections of the songs also add in a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style as well as adding in a touch of the modern atmospheric style.
Some of the tracks are also long and epic in length as well as the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing and acoustic guitars also make a return on some of the later tracks and as the album progresses a brief use of spoken word parts can also be heard. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in French and cover Paganism, History and Medieval themes.
In my opinion Ergotism are a very great sounding pagan black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Mane Humilis" "Victoria & Honerem" and "Ultionem a Populo". 8 out of 10.
