Mystras/Castles Conquered And Reclaimed/I, Voidhanger Records/2020 CD Review

mercredi 20 mai 2020 à 10:14

Mystras  are  a  solo  project  from  Greece  that  plays  a  medieval  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Castles  Conquered  And  Reclaimed"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  synths  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts   along  with  the  acoustic  guitars  also  bringing  in  elements  of  folk  music.

Violins  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  One  track  also  introduces  spoken  word  parts  and  clean  vocals  onto  the  album  as  well  as  a  couple  of  brief  instrumentals,  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  flutes,  yayli  tanbur's,  flame  drum's  and  percussion's  as  the  album  progresses.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  middle  age  themes.

In  my  opinion  Mystras  are  a  very  great  sounding  medieval  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Castles  Conquered  And  Reclaimed"  "Storm  The  Walls  Of  Mystras"  and  "Wrath  And  Blory".  8  out  of  10.

Arcano Arconite/A lua morta sobrea terra negra/Old Metal Rites/2020 CD Review

mercredi 20 mai 2020 à 08:54

Arcano  Arconite  are  a  solo project  from  Brazil  that  has had music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "A  lua  morta  sobrea  terra  negra"  which  was  released  by  Old  Metal  Rites.

Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  on  the  second  track.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark yet  melodic  style  while  also  adding  in  some  modern  and  atmospheric  touches.  Synths  also  make  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  as  well  as  adding  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys,  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

As  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  samples  can  also  be  heard,  when  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  all  of  the  songs  also  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  style  along  with  a  later  track  also  being  an  ambient  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Portuguese  and  cover   Satanism,  Darkness,  Death,  Historical  and  Misanthropic  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Arcano  Arconite  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  espera  da  morte"  "Erzebeth  Bathory"  and  "Varcolaci".  8  out  of  10.

mardi 19 mai 2020 à 11:08

The  Suns  Journey  Through  The  Night  are  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  mixture  of  raw  black  metal and  dark  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Eternal  Black  Transmissions"  which  will  be released  on  May  29th  by  Repose  Records.

Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  ambient  style  synths  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

At  times  the  music  also  captures  a  very  lo-fi  atmosphere  while  dark  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  songs  also  mixing  in  a  great  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences.

As  the  album  progresses  a  couple  of  ambient  instrumentals  can  also  be  heard along  with  a  couple  of  tracks   also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  towards  the  end  a  brief  use  of  melodic  guitar  leads  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Darkness  and  Space  themes.

In  my  opinion  The  Suns  Journey  Through  The  Night  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  raw  black  metal  and  dark  ambient  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Lightning  Scars  Across  A  Dead  Planet"  and  "Eternal  Black  Transmissions".  8 out  of  10.

Devil With No Name Interview

mardi 19 mai 2020 à 09:42
1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

The self title is our first release. Lots of high powered tone, grooves, and keeping things real. No imitation necessary. Sick of most of anything these days and not trying to fit into someone else’s previous mold. Devil With No Name is doing something else.

2.You have an ep coming out in May, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?

Well we all like metal, and we’re all generally from the West. I am now for the past 6 years. The band is taking inspiration from the environment and whatever else suits our fancy whether in the occult or the blatantly obvious. Or what should be blatantly obvious. I like outlaw country music. While not heavy in the sound of this band at the moment, I think some of that attitude is here.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

Being in the devil’s shoes and up to devilish things. Lots of self-interest with that, but also some camaraderie is welcome with everyone that gets it. We’re also a band after all and not one person.

4.All of the band members are also involved with other bands, what is it that you bring into the music of 'Devil With No Name' that you are not able to do with your other groups?

I think it’s a fresh outlook music-wise and isn’t trying to be a cookie-cutter kind of outfit. Not my style anyways. There’s longevity in our approach.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

Rodrigo Pereira Salvatierra did it. From his words, “The main image, this is a powerful being, from which blood flows and attracts skeletal and dying beings, born of the darkness they approach but do not know what to do with that red element. This blood turns to fire and something burns with it, the crowd gathers around it and is confused there is one of these skeletons who eats this blood, departs from the rest, is no longer in agony but is seen to be different He is eating and there is a line that identifies him directly with the powerful being, this is knowledge, wisdom. The emancipation of everything ... is becoming an individual being, ceasing to be a sheep. In time he will no longer need anything else, no other wisdom, teachers, archetypes, He will not kneel before anyone, or anything, or gods with halos or horns....” Absolutely appropriate to the release.

6.Has the band had any opportunities to do any live shows yet?

It’s pretty bad timing in terms of shows with all the mask wearing and shut down venues. In any case, this is a band meant to play live.

7.The new ep is coming out on 'New Density', how did you get in contact with this label?

New Density is mine. I am the label. I’ve been pressing releases I’m involved with for a few years now. At some point I may branch off into doing outside releases as well. That’s starting to happen. I have a hell of a sense of quality control to the point where I’m told I’m an asshole. Comes with the territory I guess. My pressings speak for it though and look great.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

It’s too early to tell as this release and band was just announced about two months ago. I have some good feels about it.

9.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Lord Mantis just had to cancel a shit load of shows for this year. I shouldn’t say canceled though as technically a few tours we were going to do are being rescheduled to 2021. Ready when you are.

10.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Just started writing some riffage the other day. I had to wait until this release was in its final stages before getting into that mental state. Sounding sick so far. I want to attack people’s opinions on what black metal can be and become. Come fight me.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Let’s see today I was listening to a few records. Cure Pornography, a Merle Haggard cd that pissed me off because I didn’t like the versions of the songs on it (some recorded versions are way better than others), High on Fire, Kat from Poland, and Burzum Filosofem (for me an eternal classic) I listen to a wide range of content.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

If you’ve read this far give our full ep a listen.

Dearth/To Crown All Befoulment/Sentient Ruin Laboratories/2020 Full Length Review

mardi 19 mai 2020 à 08:58

Dearth  are  a  band  from  Oakland,  California  that  plays  a  mixture  of  war,  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "To  Crown  All  Befoulment"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Sentient  Ruin  Laboratories.

A  very  fast,  raw  and  brutal  war  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  also  bring  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  bestial  growls  while  the  riffing  also  adds in  some  dissonant  structures.

A  small  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  distorted  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length,  elements  of  doom/death  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  musical  direction.

Dearth  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  war  and  bestial black/death  metal and  mixes  them  together  with  some  dissonant  and  doom/death  metal  touches  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  nihilism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Dearth  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  war,  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Writhing  In  Cellophane  Cages" and  "Blight".  8  out  of  10.
