Archean/II/2020 EP Review

jeudi 12 mars 2020 à 09:24

Archaen  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  raw  form  of  black  metal  with  some  elements  of  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2020  ep  "II".

A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

When  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  style  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  punk  elements  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  90's  influences  but  also  keeping  it  modern  at  the  same  time,  the  riffs  also  add  in  small  amount  of  melody  at  times  as  well  as  the  whole  ep  sticking  to  a  heavier  direction  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

On  this  recording  Archaen  remains  true  to  the  punk  influenced  style  of  raw  black  metal from  their  previous  release  as  well  as  showing  a  good  amount  of  progress  as  musicians.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature,  natural  hazards  and  Human  conscience  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Archean  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  punk  influenced  raw  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Waste  Land  "The  Strait".  8  out  of  10.

Ba'a/Deus Qui Non Mentitur/Osmose Productions/2020 CD Review

jeudi 12 mars 2020 à 08:29

Ba'a  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  melodic  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Deus  Qui  Non  Mentitur"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Osmose  Productions.

A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

At  times  the  musical  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  some  keyboards  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  music  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  the  relationship  of  man  to  the  divine,  and  the  damages  caused  to  this  connection  by  man's  selfish  pride  and  ego

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ba'a  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  melodic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Titan"  and  "Un  Bucher  pour  piedestal".  8 out of  10.

mercredi 11 mars 2020 à 07:57

White  Nights  are  a  band  from  the  United  States  that  plays  an  abstract  form  of  black  metal  with  some  elements  of  death  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  ep  "Into  The  Lap  Of  The  Ancient  Mother"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by   Iron  Bonehead  Productions.

Spoken  word  parts  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  psychedelic  sounding  organs  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.  Most of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  the  vocals  also  bringing  in  an  aggressive  spoken  style.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  death  rock  elements.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  avant  garde  and  experimental  sounding  along  with  one  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  all  of  the  songs  sound  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  all  of  the  tracks  sticking  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  style.

White  Nights  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  abstract  sounding  as  well  as  mixing  in  some  psychedelic,  experimental  and  death  rock  elements  to  create  something  very  original. The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover hallucinating  themes.

In  my  opinion  White  Nights  are  a  very  great  sounding  abstract  black  metal  band  with  some  death  rock  elements  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Litha"  and  "Bolthorn".  8  out  of  10.

Ande/Vossenkuil/2020 CD Review

mardi 10 mars 2020 à 20:24

Ande  is  a  solo  project  from  Belgium  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  raw  and  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self released  2020  album  "Vossenkuil"  which  will  be  released  in  April.

A  synth  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  music  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Atmospheric  elements  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times  along  with  the  synths  also  making  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording.  The  riffs  also  bring  in  a  good  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  clean  playing  and  clear  singing  onto  the  recording.

You  can  also  hear  some  influences  of  folk  and  post  black  metal  as  the  album  progresses  as  well  as  a  later  song  being  a  cover  of  Lugrubrum's  "Mjin  Koninkrijk  Van  Groen"  and  the  recording  also  closes  with  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  the  songwriters  native  tongue  and  covers  nature  and  misanthropy  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ande  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  atmospheric  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Nachtwandeling"  "De  Hutten"  and  "Sneeuw  Op  Het  Meer".  8  out  of  10.
