Black Mass Pervertor/Life Beyond The Walls Of Flesh/Blood Harvest/2018 CD Review

dimanche 4 mars 2018 à 02:51

Black  Mass  Pervertor  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  old  school  form  of  black  metal  with  a  touch  of  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Life  Beyond  The  Walls  Of  Flesh"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Blood  Harvest.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  some  evil  laughter  being  used  at  times  a  few  seconds  later  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

When  tremolo  picking  is utilized  it  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  music  also  has  a  lot  of  90's  era  Finnish  influences  along  with  the  energy  of punk  also  being  used  at  times  as  well  as  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the music  always  remains  heavy.

Black  Mass  Pervertor  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  old  school  in  the  90's  tradition  along  with  a  touch  of  punk,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  as w ell  as  giving  the  music  a  more  modern  feeling  while t he  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  and  Death  Worship  themes.

In  my  opinion  Black  Mass  Pervertor  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  band  with  a  touch  of  punk  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Imbibing  The  Seas  Of  Darkness"  "Unorthodox  Methods  of  Magick"  and  "The  Forbidden  Zone".  8  out  of  10.

The Proprietor Interview

dimanche 4 mars 2018 à 01:21
1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

            S. I’m Sean and I am half of The Proprietor.  I’m responsible for the vocals and a portion of the guitars. Frank does everything. We are from two of the five boroughs of NYC, respectively. The Proprietor began as a side project for Frank and myself while we were both playing in other bands. We had discussed working together on a project for years before it actually came about. The direction of our project before we even had a name or anything was that it was always going to be black metal.

            F. I’m Frank. Sean and I have always been fans of heavy music since our youth and it showed in the metal bands we performed in for years.  When I first met Sean, we realized pretty quickly that we were on the same wavelength creatively.  We wanted our music to be our brutal raw expression without any constrictions to our artistic outlook.  Thus, The Proprietor was born.

2.So far you have released one ep and a full length, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings and also how do they differ from each other/

            S. When we started working on the EP, I was excited about the collaboration and that it was different from what I was already doing in a previous band. The Proprietor has a more straight forward approach. I think “From Nowhere And Worthless” was more about riffs and the arrangement of those said riffs. I believe our process has matured as The Proprietor became more of our main focus. I feel “For Nothing Is My Own” is a more cohesive and prepared record. I love both but there is definitely an evolution that is apparent to anyone who listens to them in succession.

            F. “From Nowhere and Worthless” we hit the ground running.  We had 3 tracks that we have been working on and quickly recorded them.  Each track on the EP is very different in style and Direction. The Musical style ranges from Melodic Death Metal/thrash/Black Metal.  We were still trying to find our direction.  “For Nothing is my Own” was more thought out musically.  We set out with the goal of making it a complete album from beginning to end.  The type of album that you would listen to in your room while following along reading the lyrics.

3.Some of your lyrics have a poetic and prose feeling as well as being inspired by Shakespeare, can you tell us a little bit more about those lyrics?

     S. Lyrics are just as important to us as the riffs and song structures and art direction is. Lyrics have to have a narrative, whether straight forward or cryptic or metaphorical. There has to be a certain quality in the words. They have to convey something while fitting precisely within the music. it’s a balancing act. Thematically, most things can be categorized as Shakespearian. In regards to the conflicts we as humans deal with on a daily basis. Those themes vary from deception, hatred, good vs. evil, suffering and transformation, the list goes on. For the title track, “For Nothing Is My Own” it is really about being unhappy with life, with people and the ways of the world but finding comfort that it will end, it touches on an ideology that nothing is yours and nothing lasts. It is open to interpretation. I love the notion behind it. That ideally nothing is yours. You are not special. It’s all been done before sort of tone. That song may be more Bukowski than Shakespeare.

4.You also explore with the occult with your songwriting, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this subject?

       S. There are so many things that I find fascinating especially cults and the occult. I mean I don’t subscribe to any one faith but I’ve always been attracted to anything supernatural. From a small child I loved hearing ghost stories, and watching horror movies. I loved reading about Vlad Tepes or Satan, or serial killers. I still do. I have a obsessive impulse to learn more if something catches my curiosity. I enjoy learning. So when I go down those wormholes its difficult to climb out. “Suffolk Pink” is about the Boleskine House in Scotland, which is amazing to me, it housed Aleister Crowley as he performed certain rituals. it was said to have been haunted prior to his ownership which adds to the allure of the mythology. The song is basically a cliff notes on the history of the abode. “Book Of Thoth” meshes Crowley’s interpretation of the Tarot with Thoth’s roots in Egyptian mythology. My interest continues to grow.

5.I know that the band was named after a character from an old Amicus horror anthology called "From  Beyond  The  Grave", how does this name fit in with the musical style you play?

     S. I’m not sure if the name entirely fits within a genre, but I kind of enjoy that. I preferred a name that wasn’t so blatantly metal. Peter Cushing, is the proprietor of an antique shop in the film, he is a bit mysterious. Each segment revolves a person receiving an item from the shop which always ends poorly for the customer. It’s creepy and cheesy by today’s norms. The Proprietor is sinister in the sense he dishes out twisted fates to shit people. That is kind of fitting.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding your line up or do you chose to remain a duo?

     S. I think we are in agreement that The Proprietor will remain a two piece. although, we are looking to enlist some friends to accompany us for some live performances, hopefully as early as summer. I wouldn’t mind having Infernus do a lead on a song or having Nicholas Barker track drums on an album. Highly unlikely, it would be awesome nonetheless.

            F. Creatively, The Proprietor will always be myself and Sean.  We feed off of each other’s energy well.  And as we continue to learn and grow stronger, our artistic vision becomes enlightened.  The Proprietor is our first born, and we are bit over protective of it, haha.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

     S. We are not looking to sign with a label. We are not opposed to the idea. We enjoy doing everything ourselves and we definitely want full control of our art. It would take understanding and full accordance of all parties for us to sign with anyone.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

     S. We are still pretty unknown to most. But the feedback we have received has been good, surprisingly.

            F. As a group starting from the ground up, it may seem hard at first to gauge where people are listening to your music.  We have a lot to thank to social music communities, online Metal Magazines and blogs such as yours. Bandcamp, Etc.  They really do great things to help bring artists/fans from around the world together.  Coming from an age group where all of our new music was learned of through word of mouth, local mags and cd stores. To now, where I can have a conversation online with someone from Australia, Norway, Indonesia, Germany, Anywhere in the world! And share musical taste.  It’s truly inspiring.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

     S. We are already writing songs for another EP. As I mentioned before we are plotting to make playing shows a reality. We really want to create, so that is what we’re going to do.

            F. With every track we write, we are progressively finding ourselves.  As Sean mentioned we are already in the early stages of writing our next EP.  This one will be a very aggressive.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

     S. Gorgoroth. Gorgoroth is incredibly influential on me and the music I want to make. I listen to all different types. I just listened to the new Necrophobic album, Mark Of The Necrogram” and I enjoyed that. Watain, The Wild Hunt. Anathema, The Silent Enigma. Pallbearer, Heartless. Cobalt, War Metal. Ghostface KIllah. Some 70’s soul stuff. Vattnet Viskar, Settler. Emperor, IX Equilibrium. I looked through my most recent played on my Spotify and that was most recent.

            F.  I came from more of a melodic black/death metal and Swedish Death Metal background.  At the Gates being one of my most influential bands since the early 90’s as well as many others that are definitely present in my writing style. Abyss, Arcturus, Old man’s Child, Eucharist, Dark Tranquility, Katatonia, Thy Primordial, Borknagar.  Recently, I have been very much enjoying Batushka, Mgla, Der Weg einer Freihet, Cor Scorpii, Avslut.  The list goes on.  There is a lot of great bands out there.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

     S. My wife and kids. Writing. Whiskey. Mets. Films. Books.

     F. Forest trails and hiking.  I love nature photography.  Definitely good coffee and whiskey.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

      S. I’d like to say thank you to Occultblackmetalzine for the interview. Thank you to anyone who supports The Proprietor, we are humbled.

Hell's Coronation Interview

dimanche 4 mars 2018 à 01:16
1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
1.Hell`s Coronation was called in its abomination in 2016 to prafane all sanctities of monotheistic religions, especially christianity, we deal with it on a daily basics. It`s cooperation of two squalid souls – Zepar (guitars, vocals, keys) ans Coffincrusher (bass, drums). So far we spit out two unholy acts – EP „Antichristian Devotion” and EP „Unholy Blades Of The Devil”. Next rituals take shape, to present their corruption in a timely manner and make havoc.

2.So far you have released 2 ep's, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings and also how do they differ from each other?
2.Everything what was released and what will be released with Hell`s Coronation logo will be maintained in the spirit of the 90`s. We consciously cultivate those values, considering this period in extreme metal as the best. All elements of our releases are characterized by this, from graphics to music. This is not plastic metal, we don`t need weeks in studio for cleaning the sound. In studio we are absolute minimum, we end our work when we have selective dirt and muck. He who is looking for progressive in music and modern solution, should not come close to our carcass. This project is conservative and archaic with full premeditation. On both EP`s we used similar patents, to express the broken emotions in the right way for us, rottenness in the soul. The difference between these two materials is larger quantity of key spots on second EP.

3.You refer to your music as 'necro ritual black doom metal', can you tell us a little bit more about this term?
3. Our music are sounds entwined with symbolics and a corpse aura,
paying homage to the night and eternal darkness. It`s hellish magma, slowly and intricately flood her victims, leaves fragments of life to rot, let the mold finish it and give back the stench. After this the only thing that remain is dead silence. That`s Hell`s Coronation – nekroritual, black doom metal tormentor.

4.A lot of your lyrics cover Satanism and Luciferian themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?
4.I use many systems, trends and beliefs, they allow me to extend my knowledge. Writing lyrics, i transfer to paper my thoughts and reflections, they undergo transformations becoming an idea. They are signposts for the next course, they help me to place my ego and feel hate to the world. I`m watching surroundings, i`m drawing conclusions. I pass them through the filter of experience gained, and i fish out everything what is important for me and helpful in pursuit of full enlightenment. The point is to understand many powers of the universe through considerations, add wings to primal instincts, and man does not succumb to unnecessary influences. I`m sure i have my balance between my mind and soul. I`m not into any organizations, just individual work on my own. This gives me freedom.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Hell's  Coronation'?
5. Hell`s Coronation is voice of our dark demons, we give them outlet through our music. Dark side of human nature is intriguing, so also inspirational. We crown the hell, because we`re in opposition to Christianity and to the church teachings. But our hell got no biblical dimension . Hell is our daily and reality, we are hell in our contempt for human race. We walk our own path, we crown aversion and abomination, to worthless existence. It`s the direct meaning of this name.

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you chose to remain a duo?
6.Given our acquired experience from previous bands, in which we was contagious, we don`t want to engage anybody in our crusade. Such an assumption was from the first moment, in which i decided to speak under the Hell`s Coronation banner. Coffincrusher agrees with my statement, so this arrangement is optimal, it allows to celebrate magic of rehearsals and create tracks and this is enough in our case. We feel satisfied in artistic way in this configuration, we don`t want to play concerts with this project, so we dont need anybody from outside.

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and doom metal?
7.We hear the voices of approval, through the reviews from all over the world. Critical comments are also occasional, so propaganda is making through the label, harvests some harvest. It`s hard to say, how big is this interest. We do not conduct market research in this area, because we don`t give a shit. We realize, with our message, which let`s not kid ourselves gets into an airtight niche, we dont reach global recognition. What we do is very personal. We focus only on creation of new acts, which are form of cleansing of any vermin in the soul. Who is supposed to hit us, he will hit us, but for sure not everybody will stay with us for long, if he`s not devoted warrior of underground with his extreme and filthy form.

8.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
8.If we talk about me, after my departure from Deadthorn, Hell`s Coronation is my priority and here i`m engaging all my creative power. My gig hunger i quench in Nekkrofukk. These few concerts in one year are enough for me and i don`t feel the need for permanent contact with the audience. Coffincrusher also leaves Deadthorn, after he found out about my resignation. He got his mother band Damage Case, with which this year will be recording the third album. Like me, he also supports concerts of Nekkrofukk.

9.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
9.After release „Unholy Blades Of The Devil” the next ritual will be split with Cadaveric Possession, we work on it already, we want to record our part and start studio session at the end of march. The premiere is planned at autumn 2018. After this split, we plan focus on full length album. It`s gonna be a continuation of what we actually do, without useless frills, only sultry, obscure metal, fueled with swampy stench.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
10.Spectrum of our inspirations is very wide, but clear for each , who experience magic of metal before 2 or 3 decades. In our music you can hear echoes of norwegian scene, finland, swiss, or even greek. Our idea is to stoking the black flame of primordial metal, which was burn with blasphemy in the soul thanks such bands as Bathory, Hellhammer, Mayhem, Satyricon, Samael, Barathrum and Rotting Christ. We can now name many other bands, which have left their mark in our music, but these bands names i called, are ideal translating our invention in relation to the original. We make it intuitively, maybe because of our age, but also our music activity in that period. In a sense, history is circling, and for me this, what we do now in Hell`s Coronation, is continuation of these, what i`ve done in Mastiphal. Now i`m overheard in Czort – Czarna ewangelia, Kawir – Exilasmos, Moenen Of Xezbeth – Dawn Of Morbid Sorcery, Huoripukki – Nekala Dungeons, Riivaus – Lyoden Taudein Ja Kirouksin, Glorification – Against All Adversity, Morbid Perversion – Rites Of Lust And Blasphemy, Malokarpatan – Nordkarpatenland, Hades Archer – Temple Of The Impure, Abominablood – Abomination Continues and Cult Ov Black – The Ancient Lurse. Fuck enough hahaha! I could long, beceause i have a lot of things i have to listen to.

11.What are some of you non musical interests?
11.Considering the daily obligations, there`s not much time left for broadening interests other than metal, with all his aspects. It`s 24h passion, not only for weekend. Important is understanding your relatives, because they need different impulse than me. Many sacrifices are needed to reconcile in this.  After leaving the homestead , if there is time to watch a movie, match or read an interesting book, this is already a feat.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We realize, with our message, which let`s not kid ouselves gets into an airtight niche, we dont reach global recognition. What we do is very personal. We focus only on creation of new acts, which are form of cleansing of any vermin in the soul. Who is supposed to hit us, he will hit us, but for sure not everybody will stay with us for long, if he`s not devoted warrior of underfground with his extreme and filthy form.

8.What is going onw ith some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?
8.If we talk about me, after my departure from Deadthorn, Hell`s Coronation is my priority and here i`m engaging all my creative power. My gig hunger i quench in Nekkrofukk. These few concerts in one year are enough for me and i don`t feel the need for permanent contact with the audience. Coffincrusher also leaves Deadthorn, after he found out about my resignation. He got his mother band Damage Case, with which this year will be recording the third album. Like me, he also supports concerts of Nekkrofukk.

9.When can we expect a full length album and also whare do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
9.After release „Unholy Blades Of The Devil” the next ritual will be split with Cadaveric Possession, we work on it already, we want to record our part and start studio session at the end of march. The premiere is planned at autumn 2018. After this split, we plan focus on full length album. It`s gonna be a continuation of what we actually do, without useless frills, only sultry, obscure metal, fueled with swampy stench.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that havehad an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
10.Spectrum of our inspirations is very wide, but clear for each , who experience magic of metal before 2 or 3 decades. In our music you can hear echoes of norwegian scene, finnland, swiss, or even greek. We make it intuitively, maybe beceause of our age, but also our music activity in that period.

Important is understanding your relatives, beceause they need diferent impulse than me. Many sacrifices are needed to reconcile in this.  After leaving the homestead , if there is time to watch a movie, match or read an interesting book, this is already a feat.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
 12. I`ve got short message – fuck all hipsters, all those cunts in devil metal, this issue should be resolved eventually!. Leave what barbaric for real men, parade like poofs in shopping centers, drinking some fucking mokate, or other macchiato, eat shit vege tofu, there you fit. Rot, you gagged whores! Arrrrrgh...allright....thanx for interview, i go to absorb mystical energy from the forest. Amen...

Above Aurora/Path To Ruin/Pagan Records/2018 EP Review

dimanche 4 mars 2018 à 00:59

Above  Aurora  are  a  band  from  Poland  that  has  had  an  album  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  ep  "Path  To  Ruin"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Pagan  Records.

A  very  dark  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  while  the  music  is very  heavily  influenced  by  doom  metal  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  and  spoken  word  parts  are  used  briefly.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  deep  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  first  track  being  all  instrumental  and  most  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction,  spoken  word  parts  and  horned  instruments  are  also  used  briefly.

Above  Aurora  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  atmospheric  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Above  Aurora  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Abyssal  Hades".  8  out  of  10.

Ende/Goetie funeste/Obscure Abhorrence Promotions/2018 CD Review

vendredi 2 mars 2018 à 23:55

Ende  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  had  an  album  reviewed  before in  this  zine  and  plays  an  occult  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Goetie  funeste"  which  will  be  released  on  March  10th  by  Obscure  Abhorrence  Promotions".

Nature  orientated  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction  while  grim  whispers  are  also  used  briefly  before  evolving  into  black  metal screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard.

At  times  the  riffing  gets  very  raw  along  with  the  music  also  bringing  in  a  mixture  of  both  modern  and  old  school  influences  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

When  guitar  solos and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  while  stringed  instruments, acoustic  guitars  and  melodic  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  the  album  progresses  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  being  long  and  epic  in  length  as well  as  one  song  being  an  instrumental.

Ende  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  their  raw  style  of  occult  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Goetia,  Occultism,  Sorcery  and  Individualism  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ende  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Crawling  In  Winter"  "Seventh  Gate  of  A  Seventh  Sin"  and  "In  Bones".  8  out  of  10.
