Crawl/Leviathan/Red River Family Records/2018 Split EP Review

 This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  U.S.A's  Crawl  and  Leviathan  which  was  released  by  Red  River  Family  Records  and  we  will  start  the  review  of  with  Crawl  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  sludge  and  noise.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  drum  beats  and  primal  sounding  bass  guitars  while their  track  is  12  minutes  in  length    along  with  the  music  bringing  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  while  tortured  black  metal  screams  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  and  after  awhile  ritualistic  synths  are  added  into  the  music  and  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  some  acoustic  guitars  towards  the  end, the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  hateful  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Crawl  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  sludge  and  noise,  you  should  enjoy  their  side  of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Leviathan  returning  with  another  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal  track.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  an  ambient  orientated  sound  along  with  his  track  being  12  minutes  in  length  while  a  brief  use  of  bass  leads  can  also  be  heard  and  after  awhile  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffing  is  very  depressive  and  raw  sounding and  the  song  sticks  to  mostly  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Leviathan  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  solo  project,  you  should  enjoy  his  side  of  the  split.

  In  conclusion  i  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  USBM.  8/5  out  of  10.

Deathgod Messiah/Abomination Chants From Beyond The Grave/Ascension Monuments Media/2017 Compilation Album Review

  Deathgod  Messiah  where  a  band  from  Massachusetts  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  played  a  bestial  mixture  of  war,  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  compilation  album  "Abomination  Chants  From  Beyond  The  Grave"  which  was  released  by  Ascension  Monuments  Media  and  consists  of  their  2011  demo  "Bastard  Christ"  and  2013  ep  "Phallic  Flagellation" which  was  also  reviewed  by  this  zine.

  Sounds  of  Christ  being  tortured  start  off  the  compilation  along  with  some  melodic  chants  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction  while  the  riffs  also  use  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Grim  black  metal  screams  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  war  metal  elements  and  blast  beats  along  with  some  bestial  growls  also  being  used  at  times  as  well  as  the  music  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  and  the  tremolo  picking  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling.

 All  of  the  tracks  are  very  short  in  length  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  stick  to  a  very  chaotic  and  old  school  style  while  spoken  word  samples  also  return  on  one  of  the  later  tracks  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  first  side  of  the  compilation  closes  with  a  noise  outro  and  the  second  recording  displays  more  of  a  bestial  style  and  more  death  metal  elements.

  On  both  of  these  recordings  Deathgod  Messiah  played  a  musical  style  that  took  bestial  war  metal  and  mixed  them  in  with  a  great  amount  of  black  and  death  metal  elements  to  create  something  very  raw  and  blasphemous,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  blasphemy,  evil,  Satanism  and  ritual  sex  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Deathgod  Messiah  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  war,  bestial  black  and  death  metal, you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "God  Is  Dead,  Death  Is  God"  "Blasphemous  Suicide"  "Bastard  Christ"  and  "Cursing  The  Heavens".  8  out  of  10.

Kenos Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
1. Kenos is a black metal band that I started several years ago, just after another try in another band that failed to even produce a demo or appear live in no local venue, I decided that it would be better if I controlled the creative process as much as it is possible. I changed names everal times, composed over and over until I came up with Kenos in 2015 I guess : just let my soul unravel in music, with lyrics based upon mythological and occult metaphors, but which also resonates with some events that occurred in my life.

2.Recently you have released a full length, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
2. I'd say I am playing black metal. With doom, and ambient influences, but I guess many other words could describe it. I am not much into etiquettes.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with the music?
3. I mainly sing about personnal events on this album , but also about my thoughts on mankind and society. I just try to find some universality in what I want to tell, and put it in parallel with some myths and  legends?

4.One of the tracks is entitled 'Atlantis', do you have an interest in lost civilizations?

4. I do have an interest in lost civilizations. It is really appealing to me. However, I am going to stop there and I will let anyone make his own interpretation of the words I use.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Kenos'?
5. ΚΕΝΌΣ means 'void' in greek. I wanted a band name that feels like the inside of a black hole, or a botomless pit. That name feels this way to me.


6.With the exception of a session bass  player, you record most of the album by yourself, are you open to expanding this musical project into a full band?
6. It will remain creatively speaking my project. However, it shall appear live. So I guess the answer is yes, but I cannot tell you when just yet.

7.The album was released on 'BloodCrown Records', how did you get in contact with this label?
7. It is a modern-age story. The manager posted in music groups messages saying he was interested in extreme metal bands for his young label. We got in touch, and everything happened.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and doom metal?
8. Feedback is quite good for now. However, it is spreading mainly around social circles just next to my own at the moment, but I am sure it will spread further, given a little more time.

9.Are you or have you been involved with any other bands or musical projects?
9. I do sing for a local black'n roll/sludge band, Frost de Mexico. You should check it out if you are interested. I am involved in other projects with very different styles, but I am not going to talk about it because they are all in a working state.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?
10. Well, that is a very interesting question, thank you. I can begin by saying the next album will keep the signature haunting and dissonant sound that I have, but will step into quite unexpected directions, and that is rather normal : I composed "Inner Rituals" somewhere between 2014 and 2015. I discovered a ton of other bands, sounds, even outside of metal since then. So a great leap into the unknown is planned regarding the next album, and depending on what I do until I compose the one after, I hope to keep exploring uncharted sonic territories. You should expect the unexpected from this band in the future.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?



11. Extreme metal mainly, but freejazz, hip-hop, hardcore  have greatly influenced me lately. I was listening to Sleep this afternoon for instance. But I do have an attrait for anything that stands out by its musical weirdness, like Igorrr.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

12. Many, I have a very busy life. I'd like not to sleep sometimes. Software engineering, filmmaking, photography, and many more.


13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
13. I would like to thank you for this interview, a lot. And also thank anyone who will read it as well. I hope it is going to make you want to listen to my music.

Leviathan/The First Sublevel Of Suicide/Ascension Monuments/2017 CD Compilation Review

  Leviathan  are  a  solo  project  from  the  United  States  which  needs  no  introduction  and  on  this  recording  played  a  very  raw  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2017  compilation  album  "The  First Sublevel  Of  Suicide"  which  consists  of  unreleased  demo  tracks  which  where  recorded  before  his  first  full  length  "The  10th  Sublevel  Of  Suicide".

  Raw  tremolo  picking  riffs  start  off t he  compilation  along  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  At  times  the  vocals  throw  in  depressive  screams  while  the  song  also  bring  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  bringing  in  atmospheric  riffing  that  would  later  influence  future  bands  as  well  as  one  track  also  bringing  in  a  brief  use  of  demonic  voices and  when  synths  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  a  touch  of  ambient  and  clean  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  On  this  recording  Leviathan  played  a  style  of  black  metal  that  was  more  raw  and  depressive  then  later  releases  taking  a  lot  of  second  wave  influences  and  taking  them  into  a  direction  that  was  very  original  for  its  time  and  also  showing  what  was  to  come  in the  future  for  USBM,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  depression,  darkness,  suicide  and  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Leviathan  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  solo  project,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Bitter  Emblem  Of  Dissolve"  and  "The  Idiot  Sun".  8/7  out  of  10.

Ante-Inferno/A Dream Of The Devil/UKEM Records/2018 Live EP Review

  Ante-Inferno  are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  live  ep  "A  Dream  of  The  Devil"  which  was  released  by  UKEM  Records.

  Dark  sounding  keyboards  start  off  the  ep  before going  into a   very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  while  all  of t he  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with the  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  modern  atmospheric  elements  as  well  as  most  of  the  tracks  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  guitar leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  they  close  the  ep  with  an  outro.

  Ante-Inferno  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  atmospheric,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  being  recorded  live  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ante-Inferno  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  live  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Two  Thousand  Years".  8  out  of  10.
