Death.Void.Terror./To The Great Monolith/Iron Bonehead Productions/2018 CD Review

mercredi 11 avril 2018 à 03:04

Death.Void.Terror.  are  an  international  band  that  plays  a  very  ritualistic  and  experimental  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "To  The  Great  Monolith"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Iron  Bonehead  Productions.

A  very  distorted  sound  along  with  some  drum  beats  start  off  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  and  both  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when t he  music  speeds  up a   great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

At  times  the  music  brings  in  an  improv  feeling  along  with  both  of  the  songs  invoking  a  very  ritualistic  atmosphere  along  the  the  tremolo  picking  bringing  in  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  it  is  utilized  as  well  as  the  music  alternating  between  slow  and  fast  parts  and  the  music  also  always  remains  very  dark  and  experimental  yet  heavy  at  the  same  time  and  melodic  chants  can  also  be  heard  briefly  towards  the  end  of  the  recording.

Death.Void.Terror.  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  ritualistic  and  experimental  while  taking  the  influence  of  Abruptum  and  giving  it  a  more  up  to  date  atmosphere,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Ritualistic  themes.

In  my  opinion  Death.Void.Terror.  are  a  very  great  sounding  ritualistic  and  experimental  black  metal  duo  and  if  you  are a   fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "(-------)".  8  out  of  10.

Wolvhammer/The Moments Of Ash & Bone/Blood Music/2018 CD Review

mardi 10 avril 2018 à 06:08

Wolvhammer  are  a  band  with  members  from  Illinois  and  Minnesota  that  has  had  an  album  reviewed  before  in this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge  and  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "The  Moments  Of  Ash  &  Bone"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Blood  Music.

Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  along  with  the  vocals  also bringing  in  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  bringing  in  elements  of  sludge  as  well  as  some  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Growls  are  also  used  at  times  while  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion  along  with  some  songs  also  bringing  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  clear  vocals  as  well  as  some  psychedelic  elements  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  some  of  the  riffing  brings  in  influences  of  Hellhammer  and  Celtic  Frost  but  keeping  everything  more  modern and  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.

On  this  recording  Wolvhammer  keeps  the  sludge  elements  while  taking  their  black  metal  side  into  more  of  a  raw  Nordic  influenced  direction  as  well  as  adding  in  some  first  wave  influences  and  a  touch  of  punk  and  psychedelia  to  make  this  album  different  from  previous  recordings,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  suicide  and  misanthropy  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Wolvhammer  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  sludge  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Eternal  Rotting  Misery" "Bathed  In  Moonblood  and  Wolflight"  and  "Solace  Eclipsed".  8  out  of  10.

mardi 10 avril 2018 à 04:15

The  Black  Sorcery  are  a  band  from  Canada  that  plays  a  bestial  mixture  of  war,  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018 album  "And  The  beast  Spake  Death  From  Above"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Krucyator  Productions.

A  very  heavy  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  war  metal  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  bestial  growls  and  black  metal  screams  and  when  keyboards  are  used  briefly  they  give  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  chaotic  fashion  along  with  the  music  also  having  a  great  amount  of  90's  influences  as  well  as  a  touch  of  grindcore  and  the  tremolo  picking  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  and  at  times  the  growls  get  very  guttural  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

The  Black  Sorcery  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  war,  bestial  black  and  cavernous  death  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  brutal  dark recording,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  violent  themes.

Deadly Carnage Interview

mardi 10 avril 2018 à 03:16

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

The recordings ended at the end of 2017, while the album was released a few days ago, now we spend a lot of time in the rehearsal room, we are preparing some concerts, the first of which will be the official presentation of the new album.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

This new album, like the previous ones, has a sound based on the atmosphere and on the rhythm that punctuates it, but compared to the past there are more musical influences ranging from post metal to prog rock. In this album we decided to use only tube amplifiers and analog effects, I think this makes our sound truer and closer to our live performance.

3.Originally the band played in more of a black metal direction but over the years have added in more post and doom metal influences, what was the decision behind going into this musical direction?

Ours was not a decision, the evolution of our sound was natural and spontaneous, it is matured together with us and our influences. We play what we want to play, without thinking too much about definitions.

4.The lyrics on the new album have a concept to them, can you tell us a little bit more about what you have covered lyrically on the new album?

The concept of this album is the cosmos, we have imagined the cosmos as a living organism that breathes and completes its cycle of life, from birth to death, to start this cycle from the beginning in an endless whirl of long cosmic breaths

5.A lot of your lyrics have an existential and quantum science theme to them, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

Trying to understand the cosmos and its laws is something that has always fascinated humanity, we are no exception. Stephen Hawking's theories were very fascinating to us, so we decided to take a cue from them and create our own vision of things.

6.You also cover spirituality, sacred geometry and occultism, how would you describe your interest in the esoteric arts?

I have always been fascinated by the esoteric arts, I am fascinated by everything that is mysterious and difficult to understand, from everything that is hidden and obscure. I do not know why, it is probably something that I have inside of me since I was a kid and I was fascinated by the Horror films by Dario Argento.

7.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Deadly Carnage'?

This name was decided many years ago, when the band's sound was very different from now. However, it was inspired by a famous Italian book of 1800 that in one of its chapters tells the plague that struck the city of Milan in 1600.

8.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

One of our best performances is very recent, last summer we played at an outdoor festival organized by our label. The stage was mounted in the heart of nature, in a forest of the Italian Alps, we played at sunset, a beautiful concert. Our concerts are designed as a journey, we do not pause between the tracks, we play the whole concert as if it were a single long track and behind us a film is projected that transports the viewer into our visual dimension. For us music and images are connected and with a legally indissoluble.

9.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

For the moment we have not scheduled a tour, but some dates in our country to promote the new album, however we hope to be able to organize a European tour very soon.

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer music by fans of black. doom and post metal?

This new album is receiving excellent feedback both in our country and outside Europe, we are very pleased that our mix of genres is understood and appreciated.

11.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Me and all the other members of the band are part of or have been part of several musical projects, but at the moment some of these projects are still. Currently among the active ones there are Omega, which can be defined as a parallel project of the Deadly Carnage with which we explore our darker side, then are active solo projects of Dave and Alexios or respectively Wear and Tear and Tha Goblunz March, the first has a sound close to Almbient and experimental electronic music, the second one is crazy and very theatrical folk metal.

12.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

It is impossible to really predict what we will do in the near future, we do not program the sound of an album, but we let ourselves be carried away by the inspiration of the moment. However we are developing some ideas for a new concept album, but it is still very early to talk about this, but something is boiling.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Bands like Lantlos, Deafheaven, Lento, Celeste and Drudkh have certainly influenced our recent music. I am currently listening to a lot of Italian prog rock from the 70s, like Le Orme or PFM, but also more recent music such Hexvesel.

14.What are some of your non musical interests?

Personally I'm a big fan of Cinema, I watch movies of all kinds, but my favorite record will always remain Sergio Leone. I also have the hobby of nature photography, I often walk in the pristine nature to take my photographs

15.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Yes, I would like to point out that within our album there are images that contain a mystery, a sort of hidden message, if someone, who owns our album and can see the images of the booklet, has managed to decipher it can contact us

Totalselfhatred Interview

lundi 9 avril 2018 à 05:23

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

N. : “Solitude” was recorded already approx three or four years ago. So, some live shows has happened between those years. Other than that, of course the recent news was that our vocalist/guitarist C. decided to depart from Totalselfhatred. At the moment, the rest of the group are rehearsing material so that there could be only the four of us. Let’s see if we decide to bring new members into the group, but now, we are trying with this current line up.

2.You have a new album coming out close to the end of April, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

N. : Compared to the other albums ,this was different since the whole album was composed in the rehearsal room together. Earlier works has been mostly composed by A. ,with the exception of the debut album which was totally composed by A.

3.This is your first album since 2011, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?

N. : I think this question is covered In the first question.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore on the album?

N. : Lyrical topics has been life, misanthropy, desperation.

5.In your lyrics you use both the English and Finnish languages, can you tell us a little bit more about this concept?

N. : Actually we use three languages in our lyrics. Finnish, English and German. A. is originally from Germany and rest of the group are Finnish, therefore it seems quite natural to use our native tongues where-ever it seems suitable. For me, English language is easier to make lyrics, perhaps since majority of the music what I listen is in English. Also, since English is quite universal language, people can relate that more easier compared to Finnish language.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Totalselfhatred'?

N. : For me, Totalselfhatred is a channel to express my pain and anguish. Some people like to cut themselves, I do that through music. Totalselfhatred is “Strength through Pain”, in order to experience spiritual growth, you will experience pain.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

N. : I can’t speak for the rest of the groups opinion but I can express mine. For me, there has been quite many good shows but if I must mention one, the best show must have been in either in Germany, Under the Black Sun festival or one show in Minsk, Belarus. The journey to Belarus itself was an experience.

I would say that our stage performance is based on the trance-like emotion, what you achieve on stage. I forget the people around me and let the music take me to the different universe.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

N. :Nothing worth to mention, yet.

9.Can you tell us a little bit more about the art work on the new album?

N.: The album layout is designed by A., it expresses the album title “ Solitude “.

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer music by fans of black metal?

N.: To tell you the truth, I don’t know and I don’t care. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to listen.

11.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

N. : Only member who has other projects is our drummer I. and I can’t speak on his behalf on this matter. The other three members has only Totalselfhatred.

12.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

N. : I personally would like to go back to the sound and style that we did in our debut album, of course with different little twists. Something old but different.

13.What are some of the newer musical influences that you have brought onto the new recording that you where not able to do on any past releases?

N.: “ Solitude” is quite different compared to the early works. Perhaps since it was composed in the rehearsal room together. That is why you can hear various kinds of influences from sludge to post black metal.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

N.: “ Solitude “ Out on April 27th through Osmose Productions
