Eyelids/Scars Under The Snow/Vacula Productions/2020 Full Length Review

  Italy's  Eyelids  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  atmospheric  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Scars  under  The  Snow" which  was  released  by  Vacula  Productions.

  Atmospheric  sounding  synths  and  nature  sounds  start  off  the album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  All  of  the  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams.

  The  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  music  also  mixing  the  atmospheric  elements  into the  heavier  sections  of  the  recording.  Old  school  influences  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  the  recording,  synths  also  make  a  a  brief  return  as  the  album  progresses  and  a  couple  of  tracks  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  whispered  and  clean  vocals  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  melancholy,  depression  and  solitude  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Eyelids  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Absence"  "Till  Death  Unites  Us  Again"  and  "Soul  Of  The  Forest".  8  out  of  10.

In Divenire Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?



We are a band born at the end of 2016, the formers are Andrea on guitar and vocals, Elia on bass and vocals, Alessandro on guitar and Simone on drums. Each member has a different musical background, which has led to building a sound with various influences from different genres but we all share a passion for Black Metal.



2.In February you had released your first album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?



Certainly the classic Black Metal played a fundamental role, we took care of the production and we were particularly keen to give a raw sound both for the topics treated and for a role of expressiveness. Each of our tracks wants to deal with a very specific theme, which is why it was necessary to create structures that were able to make the listener perceive our thoughts.



3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored with the music?



In this album we wanted to deal with a theme on which we wanted to reflect, the decay of the artistic value. We see art as an abused and enslaved goddess in order to amuse those who otherwise would not care. Triviality and the common idea seem to have taken the upper hand on creativity and the search for beauty, at which it arises spontaneously to ask whether, given the loss of values of the modern era, there is a purpose for which is worth to give your own life.



4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'In Divenire'?



The idea of the name was born from a reflection on the need of the individual to evolve constantly and just as the person, also art should be in continuous motion. Static ideas lead to the impoverishment of the person as well as of art. We can consider the name as a warning to those who listen to us as well as to ourselves, stopping is synonymous with defeat.



5.Can you tell us a little bit more about your logo?



Our logo as well as the album cover were designed and created by Elia, it is the monogram of In Divenire inspired by the symbol of Carolus Rex.



6.How would you describe the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?



The artwork depicts a woman dressed only in a veil in a moment of devotion. His devotion can be directed to anything, be it a creed, a philosophy or simply another person, what matters is what pushes a person to indulge in devotion or desire. Everyone craves something, but not everyone is ready to bring into play what they have or what they love in order to obtain the object of their longings. Reason is compromise, daring is victory.



7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?



We played alongside bands with a name already relevant in the Black Metal scene and we can say that what really made the difference was not so much the quality of the bands as the ardor of the audience. Paradoxically, we preferred live with a small number of spectators but who showed a strong attachment to our music rather than live with a greater number of spectators but with whom we have not actually been able to find a connection. Our performances are the mirror of our record, although it is divided into tracks, each song is related to the next, therefore there are actually no pauses between one song and another. Our performance begins and ends.



8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?



Our future intention is to be able to play live on as many occasions as possible, if there will be the possibility also abroad but for the moment nothing planned.



9.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?



We will certainly try to join a label in the future, however it must be made clear that the path is impervious and we believe we still have a way to go before taking the "big step". For the moment our aim is to reach as many people akin to our identity as possible, the rest will be seen.



10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?



As it is normal that there have been those who have appreciated us as well as those who have not, after all we primarily recognize that we play a "dirty" Black Metal and this brings with it both its strengths and its shortcomings. What actually brought us pleasure is the fact that those who appreciate us in the majority of cases have understood the meaning of our songs.



11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?



As our name suggests, we are constantly changing, so making predictions is objectively complicated. The only sure thing is that we will continue to carry on our art born not from will but from necessity.



12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?



Classic Black Metal bands have played a fundamental role in influencing our music, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Emperor and Gorgoroth first of all. However, each of us also listens to other musical genres whose contribution has strongly influenced the way we compose. Andrea approached Black Metal during his adolescence with bands like Nargaroth and Sargeist but he also listens a lot to Melodic Death Metal and Progressive which led to proposals for various polyrhythms (with annexed equally varied and possible offenses by the rhythmic sector). Alessandro has regularly listened to bands like Burzum, Peste Noire and Emperor since he was a boy but over time he began to appreciate Post-Black bands such as Deafheaven, Lantlos and Les Discrets or Post-Rock such as God is an Astronaut or Explosion in the Sky. Simone's ratings vary a lot according to his mood, he can go from bands like Killing Joke or Field of the Nephilim to Moonspell, Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh, Behemoth and Satyricon. Despite regularly listening to Black Metal, Elia is in constant search for atmospheres that work on deeper levels than a good riff could do and for this purpose most of the musical influences see as extraneous bands like QOTSA, Blur, Death in June and Neurosis, without however not being able not to mention Mayhem.



13.What are some of your non musical interests?



[Andrea] Music for me comes before anything else without compromise but beyond that I am passionate about both art and science and I love astronomy and photography. I am also passionate about video games, mainly RPG’s and Hack’n’Slash.



[Alessandro] I really appreciate cinema in general and I space a lot between genres.



[Simone] Besides music, the most important thing for me is my family.



[Elia] The truth is that I absolutely do not consider myself a good musician, but I do my best to be a good artist in the Renaissance sense of the term. I am interested in literature, figurative arts and poetry.



14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?



First of all we would like to thank you for this interview, it is always nice to be able to expose who we are behind the name In Divenire. Besides this, we can announce that the production of the second cycle of songs has already begun, the rest will be dictated by time.

Eclipser Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
1. Eclipser was formed a few years back by myself and our drummer Chris in Ottawa, Canada. We write dark and heavy music that is extreme in nature. We try not to label ourselves with any specific sub genre of metal, as our sound is more about a writing formula that we apply to whatever musical style we choose. You would need to hear us to know what I mean.

2.In September you got your first full length coming out, musically how does it differ from your previous demo?
2. Pathos differs vastly from our demos. We only made the promotional demos to find more musicians to complete our line up. It served its purpose and Pathos is essentially the product of a year of writing with that line up.

3.The lyrics on the new album cover Hermeticism, Alchemy and Occultism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those topics?
3. I’m always reading. I was up to my neck in philosophy and occult material during the writing of Pathos. It suited the atmosphere, vibe, and overall aesthetic of the record. Lyrically those topics were a state of mind for me in the writing process. We wanted an archaic feel to the record and I think we were able to capture that by utilizing esoteric concepts.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Eclipser'?

4. Eclipser simply describes our sound. That which eclipses the light. To black out and obscure.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
5. The artwork was commissioned to Misanthropic-art, who did an amazing job bringing the vision to life. The image is based off of the title track which is kind of an inversion of the story of Genesis. It’s bleak and powerful - we are very pleased with the cover.

6.What are some of the best shows that you have played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
6. We’ve had a blast performing Pathos so far. We played a couple of shows in Quebec not too long ago and those were awesome. We have a no-bullshit approach to playing live. We let the music do the talking and serve the songs the best we can.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?
7. Right now we’re doing pre-production for our next record so shows have been less of a priority, but we’re pumped to get back at it.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

8. We released Pathos through Noise Salvation which is a record label operated by Canadian grind legends Fuck The Facts.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

9. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback. There have been articles and reviews written from people in Mexico and Germany. That’s the internet for you. We are grateful.



10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
10. Time will tell. Musically, we plan to continue to refine our sound. We are hard at work on the next record and we are looking forward to getting back out there and doing what we do.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
11. We play what we want to hear. We all listen to different music but I can’t say that any particular band or genre has influenced our writing for Eclipser directly. As far as extreme music goes, Chris, the drummer listens to a lot of melodic death metal, and Christian our guitarist listens to old school death and grind. I like black metal. Our individual tastes are far too eclectic to make much sense of beyond that.

Golden Light/Sacred Colour Of The Source Of Light/Iron Bonehead Productions/2020 CD Review

  Golden  Light  are  a  duo  from  parts  unknown  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  atmospheric  form  of  ambient  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Sacred  Colour  Of  the  Source  Of  Light"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Iron  Bonehead  Productions.

  A  very  raw  and  lo-fi  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  while  atmospheric  sounding  synths  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background.  Tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Elements  of  ambient  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  some  of  the  riffing  also  having  its  repetitive  moments  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  one  of  the  songs  as  will  as  the  music  also  having  its  experimental  moments,  when  guitar  leads  are  finally  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  style.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  lo-fi  while  the  lyrics  cover  madness,  mysticism,  death  and  the  damned  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Golden  Light  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw,  lo-fi  atmospheric  and  ambient  black  metal  duo  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Sceptre  Of  Solar  Idolatry"  and  "Sacred  Colour  Of  The  Source  Of  Light".  8  out  of  10.

Gloosh/Timewheel/Casus Belli Musica/Beverina/2020 CD Review

  Gloosh  is  a  solo  project  from  the  Siberian  region  of  Russia  that plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  mossy  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Timewheel"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Casus  Belli  Musica  and  Beverina,

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a very  melodic  style  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very powerful  sound  to  them.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  riffs  also  bring  in  a  good  amount  of  melody  along  with  some  nature  sounds  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  the  classic  style  of  East  European  black  metal.  Classical  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly and  one  track  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  melodic  singing  in  the  background,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  animism  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  Gloosh  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Timewheel"  and  "Groza".  8  out  of  10.
