Minneriket/Anima Sola/Akslen Black Art Records/2018 CD Review

jeudi 28 décembre 2017 à 04:35

Norway's  solo  project  Minneriket  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  is also  in t he  ambient  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  album  "Anima  Sola"  which  will  be  released  in  2018  by  Akslen  Black  Art  Records.

Bass  playing  and  clean  guitars  start  off  the  album before  adding  in  heavier  riffing  and  grim  black  metal  screams  which  also  have  a  depressive  and  suicidal  edge  at  times  while  the  synths  also  bring  in  elements  of  ambient  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  faster  sections  of t he  songs  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  feeling  along with the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

The  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  demonic  growls  can  also  be  heard  while all  the  drum  beats  are  all  programmed,  when  melodic  vocals  are  used  briefly  they  bring  in  a  touch  of  goth  rock  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  clean  guitars  on  a  few  of  the  later  tracks.

Minneriket  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  his  ambient  style  of  black  metal  while  also  adding  in  a  romantic  and  gothic  touch,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  Norwegian  and  English  and  cover  Paganism,  Existentialism,  and  Melancholy  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Minneriket  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "An  All  Too  Human  Heart"  "I  AM  The  Serpent  Son"  and  "Time  For  Suicide".  8  out  of  10.

Exterior Palnet Interview

mercredi 27 décembre 2017 à 06:40
1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Exterior Palnet started on December the 5th 2015. when Vladić and I had our first rehearsal. After that rehearsal we had the first 9 minutes of album done. It was basically his riffs that we rearranged a bit and gave them new aesthetics since he's primarily a drummer and had them recorded pretty raw. Our goal was to blend my guitar-oriented pieces with some more basic, classical black metal stuff, while maintaining the flow of record which ended up as one 32 minute song. We didn't cut it to pieces until the mastering. We continued with rehearsals throughout the December and January, and the basic skeleton of 'Dorsia' was done sometime in February 2016. I met Hrastovec on some random gig sometime in January 2016. I think, and soon he joined on vocals. We started recording in April 2016, when we recorded drums. Recording sessions ended around January 2017. and then came the mixing process which turned out to be one of the crucial things about the record since Rao Brlečić sprayed his magic all over it and launched it into some other spheres. Mastering was done in Portland, Oregon by Brad Boatright in Audiosiege studio and on December the 17th 2017. 'Dorsia' was ready for launching.

2.Recently you have rleeased your first album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

It's our innitial take on black metal representing the 32 minute evolution from pretty basic and raw beginning to a bit detailed and layered parts in other half which will be continued from that point on our next record we're currently working on.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores wirh the music?

Hrastovec says 'Lyrics follow a path of individuals afterlife. In first three chapters individual cannot leave its human shell after death (killed in occult ritual), as his concious still floats right beside him after burial. He is eagar to transcend to afterlife but instead gets trapped in cosmic void (IV, V, VI,VII).

Esoteric mysticism developed in form of narrative poetry, inspired by sci-fi culture.'

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Exterior Palnet'?

It's mainly inspired by our producer Rao Brlečić and croatian singer/songwriter Mladen Grdović. If there wasn't for that duo, there probably wouldn't be Exterior Palnet. I'm surprised some think 'Palnet' is not on purpose, I'm always overrating humans. Anyhow, it's kind of a long story if you don't know the circumstances, I don't think anyone wants to read that.

5.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Currently, no. At some point I would definitely like to do at least one-off show where we would play Dorsia in full, and we'll have to wait to see when will the right circumstances come. Our primary focus at this moment is working on sophomore album, and trying to release it in 2018 or early 2019.

6.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Few days after the digital release we were contacted by a certain Russian label and I'm glad to say we reached an agreement, Dorsia will soon be out on CD.

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

It's been mostly positive feedback, but whatever.

8.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that the drummer is a part of, and alsoare any of the other band members involved with any other musical projects?

As far as I know, Celephais is a thing of past for quite some time, while Pogavranjen has just awakened and heading in a new direction with Niko Potočnjak and some other Seven That Spells members. He's also in other 3 or 4 bands, we'll see if anything good comes from that. Hrastovec is currently busy with noise/grind project Bagmans and probably many others that I'm failing to keep track on. I've recently released debut album with Deuel (with Vladić also playing there), while ThroaTTwisteR is gearing up with new drummer after Nikola Pešut moved to Ireland.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Our starting point will be blending Deathspell Omega and Liturgy influences with the atmosphere of 'The Void' album by The Flying Luttenbachers, which is really something special. That said, final product will probably sound completely different, but we like to think it's our direction. We'll see where it goes from there.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I've recently discovered 'Screams and Whispers' album by Anacrusis which blew me away, so I'm diving into their discography a bit more. I couldn't believe how underrated they are. Other than that I'm going all the way from Aphex Twin beginnings to Muse or Vektor, which is orgasming my ears with their debut at the moment. Regarding the other guys in band, I'd say our main influences are Krallice, Emperor, Liturgy, Gorguts, Deathspell Omega, Wolves In The Throne Room, Vektor and all that good stuff.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

No... we're basically not doing that other stuff. It's taking me 5 minutes to remember something, which probably means there isn't anything.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I've always wanted to touch Mikael Åkerfeldt's hair.
Bruno Čavara
