Malsumis/Spirit Decay/Lycaean Triune/2017 Cassette Review

vendredi 19 mai 2017 à 21:27

Malsumis  are  a  band  from  Alaska  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Spirit  Decay"  which  was  released on  cassette  by  Lycaean  Triune.

A  very  heavy  yet  dark  guitar  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  after  awhile  death  metal  growls  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence  known  along  with  a  decent  amount  of  melodic  riffing  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  Ukrainian  influences  and  clean  playing  is  also  used  at  times  and  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  atmospheric  style  synths  are  also  used  briefly.

Malsumis  plays  a  style  of  atmospheric  black  metal  that  shows  an  influence  of  hate  Forest  and  Drudkh  in  the  vocal  approach  while  also  having  a  style  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Mythology  themes.

In  my  opinion  Malsumis  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Frostborn"  and  "Abyssal".  8  out  of  10.

Moonaadem Interview

vendredi 19 mai 2017 à 19:02

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
This project is a “next step” in my metal music career where I wish to focus on the ambient and atmospheric aspects of black metal music.

2.In June you have an album coming out, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
I would say that the musical direction of this album is oriented towards an ambient sounding metal, mixed with black metal parts and traditional black metal vocals.

3.You were once a part of 'Black Folly', what was the decision to put an end to that project and start this new one?
Interesting question, well in the last days of “Black Folly” I had started mixing post-black metal elements in the music, I was growing very fond of the genre until, in my opinion, it took a bad turn. So I decided that it’s time to end this chapter and start a new one with a darker sound.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your newer music?
Mainly the lyrical themes are about life, death grief and nature.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Moonaadem'?
‘Moonaadem’ is Arabic for ‘Non-existent’, one of the main reasons that made me start this project was that I decided that it’s time we rose above our personal struggles and made art about what is truly important which is the worthlessness of life.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, would you be open to working with other musicians if they are available in the area where you live at?
Concerning the musical composition process and lyrics writing I would say that I would prefer to do it myself, so that I could always portrait a true image of ‘Moonaadem’ and keep spreading the same message, but I am open to having session musicians for playing my material live and also open for collaborating with other artists for other projects.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
Basically this album will be released independently, but if a good record deal came along the way I might take it, nothing is sure.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of ambient black metal?
I would say the feedback was rather positive, but I think we will truly know when the full album is released.

9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?
Well I have other projects than ‘Moonaadem’ I am also a film music composer for short movies and such, I see myself continuing my black metal project and advancing in film music composition in the future.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Lately I have been listening to some traditional black metal, old Satyricon, old Taake…etc also listening to some depressive black metal, Nyktalgia, Lyrinx, Austere…etc  other than metal music ive been listening to some Mogwai and This will destroy you…etc . I think what has influenced this album what traditional black metal and ambient depressive music mainly.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Photographing Nature, animation movies and writing

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
I would like to thank you for this interview, and thank all the people that have supported the project so far.

  "Legiones  De  La  Noche"

Spoken  word  parts  start  off  the  song  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction  along  with  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  a  more  raw  feeling  while  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  Swedish  style  while  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  "Odio  Tortura  Y  Muerte".

A  distorted  amp  sound  starts  off  the  song  which  is  also  long  and  epic  in  length  before  adding  in  melodic  leads  and  riffs  along  with  some  drum  beats  and  after  awhile  black  metal  screams  start  to  make  their  presence  known  while  also  keeping  the  old  school  tradition  of  the  previous  track  reviewed  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  song  also  evoking  a  very  raw  feeling.

Rienaus  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  satanic  form  of black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Saatanalle"  which  will  be  released  on  My  26th  by  KVLT.

A  very  heavy  yet  dark  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal s creams  start  to  make  their  presence  known  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

During  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  while  the  guitar  leads  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion  and  the  songs  also  bring  in a   great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

Most  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  style  without  sounding  too  retro  and  there  is  also  a  brief  keyboard  instrumental  that gives  the  album  a  horror  movie  feeling  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Rienaus  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw,  satanic  and  traditional  sounding,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Finnish  and  cover  Satanism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Rienaus  are  a  very  great  sounding  satanic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hanen  Armostaan"  "Valisoitto"  and  "Pimea  Hehku".  8  out  of  10.

Heresiarch/Death Ordinance/Dark Descent Records/2017 CD Review

jeudi 18 mai 2017 à 07:08

Heresiarch  are  a  band  from  New  Zealand  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  bestial  mixture  of  black,  war,  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Death  Ordinance"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Dark  Descent  Records.

Atmospheric  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  introduces  bestial  death  metal  growls  onto  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  war  metal feeling.

Black  metal  screams  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of the  songs  and  you  can  also  hear  some  Australian  and  Boss  Bay  influences  in  the  bands  musical style  while the  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  more  of  a  chaotic  style  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  a  great  amount  of  brutality  and  some  of  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Heresiarch  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  bestial  mixture  of  black,  war  and  death  metal  of  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  a  future  ravaged  by  30  years  of  war.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Heresiarch  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  bestial  black/death  and  war  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Consecrating  Fire"  "Ruination"    "lupine  Epoch"  and  "Desert  Of  Ash".  8  out  of  10.
