Ghazghkull/Signs Of Hate/Morbid Shrine Productions/2015 Demo Compilation Review

  Ghazghkull  where  a  solo  project  from  Spain  that  played a  very  raw  and  misanthropic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  demo  compilation  album  "Signs  Of  Hate"  which  was  released  by  Morbid  Shrine  Productions.

  Nature  sounds  and  atmospheric  synths  start  off  the  compilation  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction  that  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  along  with  some  grim  screams  a  few  seconds  later  and  the  songs  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Most  of  the  music  is  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  style  and  you  can  also  hear  synths  in  the  background  at  times  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  and  distorted  fashion  and  one  of  the  tracks  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  a  later  track  brings  in  melodic  Gregorian  chants  that  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  while  the  main  focus  remains  more  on  a  raw  style  of  black  metal.

  Ghazghkull  played  a  style  of  black  metal  that  was  very  raw  and  misanthropic  taking  the  90's  style  into  the  early  21st  century  and  also  had  an  atmospheric style  at  times  which  was  very  common  for  the  Iberian  bands  of  the  mid  90's,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  misanthropy,  darkness  and  blasphemous  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ghazghkull  where  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  misanthropic  solo black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Avatar  Of  Darkness"  "Witness  Of  Nocturnal  Silence"  and  "The  End  Of  The  Human  Race".  8  out  of  10.

Coldbound Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
1. Hello. Recently I am releasing my third full length album .Rites Under Moonlight.
Now we are on production process and distribution.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
2.Well . Rites Under Moonlight, is a special album, because also is my personal first concept album , the sound differs a lot from the other two releases and because the whole process of the recording was a painfull process with lots ups and down but at the end the final result came at last.
  Previous releases took shorter time to be produced and to be recorded. Anyways I am satisfied 'cause finally I created the Coldbound sound.


3.Originally the music was all instrumental but over the years you have evolved into doing more melodic blackened death metal, doom metal and black metal, can you tell us about how your musical sound has evolved into all of these different directions over the years?
3.I think Coldbound was never an instrumental project. The first EP indeed had a lot of "soundtracks" with only some keys inside but anyways, to the main point. When I start doing music , I did the mistake to listen at bands I want to sound like, such as a copycat ,and I was dissapointed 'cause the sound at the end was not what I was expecting.
In the new album , I have a bit more "universal" ear , through out the whole process of the recordings I used to listen to music that has nothing to do with extreme scene...mostly was pop and alternative rock such as Boney-M , Muse, Seigmen, A-Ha etc. etc.
So I think this helped a lot to create something different without setting transparent boundaries or limits on limiting my sound ,imagination and visions.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects that you explore with your music?
4.Lyrics are all about personal struggles, nature , demise and on the new album also additional main topic is ice,cold and the winter fullmoon.
Strictly I recorded the whole album during the times of Fullmoon, we all have a source of inspiration and that was mine, if you know what I mean.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Coldbound'?
5.This is a really valid question indeed, and was asked quite many times.I would like to avoid on answering this question since is a really sensitive and personal issue that only a handfull of people on earth know about.

6.Originally this was a solo project but had a full line up at one time, can you tell us what the current status?
6.Yes indeed. Somewhere during April I asked Andras (keyboards) and Jasmin(vocals) to help me with the recordings of the new album.
In fact Jasmin didn't recorded anything on this album but I am having thoughts of recordings for next year, were I am gonna use her voice.
Andras crafted the Intro and Outro . The process of recording was funny as we were trying to record keyboards for the songs of the album .
Outro comes out of the song called "Origins of black sun"

7.In the beginning no lyrics where published but the new album had the lyrics printed on the Metal Archives, can you tell us a little bit more about this change?
7.In the beginning I didnt wanted to share the lyrics , not because of the obvious typos we all do anyways, but because those lyrics ,as the Coldobund name is something really personal. As about the second album , which was dedicated to the life and death of L.S.K(Secrets of The Moon) , there's one more reason to limit this album to a not -so commercial- material.
On Rites Under Moonlight as you noticed I dont number even the album as (III) in front. Is something that I dont want to do anymore with Coldbound , as Rites Under Moonlight opens a whole new direction for me and my musical visions.
Lyrics were published, except the second song "Deep Into The Woods" . Lyrics were done by an old friend and I cant share them , but tho I can use them on the recordings. Also I can't reveal the name of this person but is the same person who did the lyrics on the second album.

8.Whatever ever happened for the plans for the split with  'White Mist'?
8.That's also a question I receive quite often .Never thought news would spread that fast. Well guys from White Mist recorded 2 songs for the split, as well I recorded 2 songs, but without any notice they peferred to release those 2 songs as their individual demo release.
That's not bad at all , but it was a clear message that they didn't wanted to cooperate with me and that's totally fine.

9.On the new album you worked with Black Lion Productions and Moonlight Productions, do you feel these 2 labels have been very supportive?
9.Moonlight Productions is my own creation and label that will release albums of my own projects - and why not...if something nice comes up around then I can release someone's else material.
Black Lion Production , Oliver and Marcos have supported me a lot as well as with Sepulchral Silence from U.K . They are a lot professional and I am sure there's a great future on Black Lion Production ,as long as they keep their roster limited and good as it is now.

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
10.Well,I haven't read a lot of reviews since there are not so many on the display, but from what I have read, people seem to like what I do. I am not confident about the first 2 releases but at least I can accept that myself I did a decent work on Rites Under Moonlight, so I kinda wanna to believe people will like it.

11.Are you currently involved in other musical projects these days?
11.I am doing vocals at the moment for ARVAS (norwegian black metal band from '90s) and we are going to have a bit of busy times next year. This is as well my main project for the moment. Also I am recording music for Reverence IX which is another personal project but has nothing to do with Coldbound. Is something much more different and professional and will take so much time to release the first album since I want every thing to be perfect on it .

12.Where do you see yourself heading into musically during the future?
12.I hope that I will see myself doing steps further...is a long way tho. Lots to learn , lots to listen at.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
13.As I mentioned, pop from '80s such as Boney-M's,A-ha,Petshop Boys,Culture Club , then to the most progressive listening to Muse, Seigmen,Deep Purple and lots of other stuff of course.

14.How would you describe your views on Occultism?
14.Well , also one subject I don't want to share on display. Is better if we all keep our views on a personal frame and spectrum.

15.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Nidhoggr Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Hvedrungr: We are a black metal band. Bot much else to tell.

2.Recently you have released a demo, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
Hvedrungr: Primitive.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Hvedrungr: Norse mytholgy, war, end of the world

4.I know that the name 'Nidhoggr' comes from Norse Mythology and Paganism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topics?
Hvedrungr: Not much else to tell except that this is what I am interested in. Especially the parts about Ragnarök which kind of (using metaphors) portrays whats happening to the world right now. Then world will end and we will all die. When? Who knows. How? No one knows. We will probably destroy ourselves though... But since we don't know (yes... no one knows, you kan only believe) there is no point worrying. Just embrace the fact and live your lives until the day comes. You may not even notice it. It might just be like someone... just shuts of the light.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Hvedrungr: We have never played live... Yet.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Hvedrungr: None so far. When our upcoming album is mastered and sent to the label (Craneo Negro records) we are planning to work on a second one.

7.The demo is going to be released on cassette by 'Lake Of Fire productions', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
Hvedrungr: This is my own label. Some past releases has been made. Not much else to tell. Supporting Lake of Fire is to support Nidhöggr.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
Hvedrungr: Not much so far. We are a new band. Our upcoming album will be released by mexican label Craneo Negro Records.

9.Are any of the band members also involved with any other bands or musical projects?
Hvedrungr - Guitars: Ex basist of Pagan Rites and Styggelse and the only existing member today of Under Attack.
Nox: Also the singer of Craft and Omnizide
Vanagandr: Ex drummer of El Camino and Under Attack. Current drummer of the bands In Pain, Karnivore and Goat Skull.
Hrungnir: Is also involved in a few bands besides Nidhöggr but does not want to name them or anything else regarding him.

10.According to the fb page you are working on your first full length, what can we expect musically once it is released?
Hvedrungr: Pretty much the same as on the demo. Black metal. The album will consist of 9 tracks.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Hvedrungr: The band is influenced by lots of bands. And all bands we listen to have some impact on my writing when I write new songs. Too many bands to name all.

Grimmdrasil Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the musical project these days? I am working on new material that is less metal and more dark experimental groove oriented type of stuff. I am also in the process of going through all of my old material and remastering it for future release. I am remastering my 3rd album right now.

2.So far I have heard the first album but how would you describe the musical sound of the later material that you have recorded? There is a common core of dark experimental type sound that runs through all of the material. I really do not know how I would categorize the later material. I have so much going through my head that the sound can differ greatly from song to song. I think it is almost like the spin of a wheel which has on it every influence I have, whatever it lands on is what I record. Nice vague answer I know. hahaha

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your music? The macrocosm side is the struggle of humankind to find meaning in a meaningless Universe. The microcosm or individual level is various levels of mental malady. The alienation and depression of being a human with brain chemistry that makes being human very uncomfortable. Also fear, sadness, absurdity, and a very subtle layer of humor, which plays on the notion that humor is humanities best and probably only defense against stark emptiness and meaninglessness.

4.I know that the name 'Grimmdrasil' comes form Norse Mythology, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic? I chose Grimmdrasil of course as a play on Yggdrasil. In one sense it is like a darkening of the world tree. Also Yggdrasil means Odin's Horse which is another term for gallows which is where the idea and term All life hangs from the Grim tree of life comes from. It also has a Evolutionary Biology slant as it is a kind of play on the phylogenetic tree of life. I added Grimm in front Drasil because life is short and grim, or at least is has been for the vast majority of species that have lived on this planet. You are riding a grim horse in a game that was not of your making and you have other options but to stop and die or continue forward through the fever dream of life.

5.A lot of the albums have been recorded years ago but only started getting released in 2015, why did you wait all of these years? At first I was just recording all this stuff just for myself; as a kind of therapy I guess you could say. As time went on I started to feel that I should maybe do something with all these stupid cdr's that were laying in the closet; none of which were bloody labeled. When I first recorded them I really didn't have the intention of releasing anything because I just felt that it would be pointless amid the glut of music on the internet. Eventually it started nagging at me to do something with all of this work just sitting here. So i did and now I am writing this to some stranger on the internet. haha

6.When I listened to some of the music it sounded very much ahead of its time, how do you think people would of reacted to the albums if they where released shortly after they where recorded? It might have got more attention; Although my personality almost works against such things. haha

7.On the albums you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer the solo route? I have most of the time preferred the solo route.I think mainly because of my undiagnosed social anxiety disorder. I also just like being able to do everything at my own pace. but that does not mean I am not open to collaborations. For example I have started working with Emir doing synth on a project.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to the music by fans of black metal? I have not had very much feedback at all. I did have a good review in Terrorizer magazine in 2005. I don't even remember what issue it was. I don't think straight up pure black metal fans would dig it to much because it is not pure black metal and I don't think progressive rock fans would like it to much because it is to raw and to metal. I am stuck in limbo. haha I may be being to cynical here, I am not sure

9.According to the metal archives page there has been no music recorded, can you tell us a little bit more about the last 8 years? There has been music recorded in that time it is just no one knew about it but me. I think it was around 2010 I stopped recording because I thought there was really no point in it because there are millions of fucking bands. I also may have burned myself out a bit. A bit later on I realized that it was either continue doing music or just stop and die. Without a creative outlet there is no point in existing at all beyond the obvious basic subsistence.

10.Are you planning on recording or writing newer material in the future and if so where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future? Yeah like I said, I am working on new stuff right now. As far as the future, I really dont have a plan for the future besides just keep working on new material and keep living until I am dead.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays? As far as influences go I would say, 70s prog rock Italian, but all other counties as well. 70s jazz fusion. Corte Dei Miracoli, Museo Rosembach, Ys, Le Orme, PFM, Cervello, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, Sensations Fix, Madrugada, Ossana, Quella Vecchia Locanda, Van Der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Peter Hamill, Caravan, Camel. The whole 70s Canterbury scene. Frank Zappa Mahavishnu Orchestra,  Miles Davis, George Duke, Billy Cobham, Alphonso Johnson, Papa Creech, P Funk,   The list goes on and on. I am and probably always will be stuck in the 70's. As far as modern stuff goes I like Enslaved, Blut Aus Nord, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Arcturus, Steven Wilson, Borknagar, Portishead. I forgot to mention 70s experimental Electronic music as well. The list goes on and on and on.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts? Yeah I suppose this interview was kind of depressing. There was no interesting heart warming inspirational story about drugs and hitting rock bottom and finding redemption through music blah blah blah. Just some boring guy. I should have livened it up with some ridiculous humor. It is to late now. I am to tired. I fucking blew it. BYE  Oh and thanks for the interview.

Azerine/Throne Ov Perdition/Merdumgiriz/2015 EP Review

  Azerine  are  a  solo  project  from  Arizona  that  plays  a  raw  form  of  occult  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2015  ep  "Throne  Ov  Perdition"  which  was  released  by  Merdumgiriz.

  A  very  dark  and  raw  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  and  a  few  seconds  later  the  music  speeds  up  and  also  brings  blast  beats,  grim  screams  and  melodic  guitar  leads  onto  the  recording  and  the  songs  are  very heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  style  and  also  brings  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  At  times  the  vocals  get  very  high  pitched  and  the  slower  riffs  have  a  very  dark  and  ritualistic  vibe  to  them  along  with  more  of  an  orthodox  style  and  all  3  of  the  tracks  stick  to  a  very  heavy  and   old  school  black  metal  style  that  also  avoids  any  modern  trends  and  the  ep  sounds  like  it  could  of  easily  been  released  20  years  ago.

  Azerine  plays  a  style  of  occult  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  old  school  taking  the  genre  back  to  is  roots,  the  production  sounds  very   dark  and raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Satanism,  Chaos/Black  Magick  and  Afterlife  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Azerine  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw,  occult  black  metal  solo  project and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Darkness  Unparalelled".  8 out  of  10.
