Gonemage/Mystical Extraction/Tomb Tree Tapes/2021 Full Length Review

jeudi 20 mai 2021 à 05:44

Gonemage  are  a  solo  project  from  Dallas,  Texxas  that  consists  of  a  member  from Cara  Neir  plays  a  very  experimental  and  melancholic  form  of  post  black  metal  with  elements  of  chiptune  and  shoegaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "Mystical  Extraction"  which  was  released  by  Tomb  Tree  Tapes.

A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Elements  of  video  game  music  are  also  added  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  the  music  also  has  its  experimental  moments.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  all  of  the  drum  beats  are  programmed.  Synths  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording   along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Touches  of  shoegaze  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  one  of  the  songs  also  introducing  clean  vocals  onto  the  album,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  science  fantasy  and  video  game  themes.

In  my  opinion  Gonemage  are  a  very  great  sounding  experimental  and  melancholic  post  black  metal  solo  project  with  elements  of  chiptune  and  shoegaze  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Gullying  And  The  Purple  Hoax"  and  "Ipirita".  8  out  of  10.

Vergeblichkeit/Die Almosen der Wunde/Narcoleptica Productions/2021 CD Review

jeudi 20 mai 2021 à 03:13

Vergeblichkeit  are  a  solo  project  from  Germany  that  plays  a  raw  form  of  gothic  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his 2021  album  "Die  Almosen  der  Wunde"  which  was  released  by  Narcoleptica  Productions.

A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Goth  style  clean  vocals  and  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  angry  sounding  black  emtal  screams  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  amount  of  90's  influences.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  album  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  depressive  moments  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  and  the  closing  song  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Vergeblichkeit  plays  a  musical  that  takes  raw  and  the  early  era  of  depressive  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  goth  rock  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  the  futility  of  existence  and  the  impermanence  of  the  inner  self-expressed  with  some  inspirations  from  German  Romanticism.

In  my  opinion  Vergeblichkeit  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  gothic  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Wundentum  Geheiß"  "Tod  oder  Anderlass"  and  "Als  Ebbe  und  Flut  der  Hungerlohn".  8  out  of  10.

Ouija Interview

mercredi 19 mai 2021 à 05:23

1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and 5release of the new ep?

We have been working all year 2020 on the composition of new songs, first we wanted to launch an EP and then focus on preparing new material so possibly in early 2021 launching a full album.

2. Recently you have released a new ep, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

We try to maintain the same spirit in our music as in the past but it is obvious time passes and it makes you mature in many aspects and that is reflected in our current sound but we try not to lose our primary seal of identity and be honest with our convictions.

3. This is your first release in 8 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

During these last years the band was somewhat stopped, so to speak, for different personal reasons unrelated to the band, but Map our guitarist got in contact with our new guitar JM101 and they began to compose new songs that was the impulse that we needed to return from new to the load.

4. Over the years you have also covered a lot of satanic and occult themes with your lyrics and your band name also reflects on dark magickal practices, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the black arts?

From a very young age I have always felt a strong attraction for this type of practice, I am always fascinated by the dark and forbidden, I do not consider myself one of their flock, so I always try to fight them with my way of thinking and writing to try to break with their dogmas established...it is better to walk alone on the left path than to be one more on the right one among sheep.

5. What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects you have explored over the years with your music?

I believe that the human mind is a trunk of depravity, there you can find a great source of endless inspiration, the human being is a destructive being by nature, the worst animal that lives in this world ... you just have to search inside you and you will find many twisted things to write about.

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

There are many good moments lived in our shows, it is difficult to just stay with one, when you go up on stage it is as if I go into a trance I take out all the beast that is inside me I try to enjoy that moment to the fullest, it is something very spiritual difficult to explain with words.

7. One of the band members also goes by the name 'Midgard', do you also have an interest in Norse Mythology?

Under the pseudonym of Midgard is my person, I have always had a great interest in all mythologies and history in general, I chose that name many years ago as a pseudonym at that time it was very attractive and of course I like Nordic mythology It is exciting but nowadays it is a fashion that is already widely adopted by many bands that really bores me.

8. The new ep was released by 'Negra Nit', how would you compare working with this label to your previous label 'Xtreem Music'?

We are delighted to work with Negra Nit, they are very honest and authentic people with what they do, this time we chose them for the release of the EP because we were looking for a more specialized label in Black Metal that is the main decision.

9. What is going on with 'Spellcraft' these days?

With SPELLCRAFT now everything is stopped, I can say little more about it.

10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

This is our style and we will die with it, we have our stamp of identity and at this point in our life it is too late to change.

11. What are you currently listening to nowadays?

Lately I try to be selective with what I listen to, but I have really enjoyed the latest Voodus, Deus Mortem or Acherontas releases.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for your time and interest in the band and for interviewing us.

We live in a world full of vermin that want to eat our brains ... don't let them do it !!!

Aklash/Horizon/2021 Full Length Review

mercredi 19 mai 2021 à 03:18

Aklash are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  moves  away  from  their  atmospheric  black  metal  style  and  going  into  more  of  a  ritualistic  neo-classical  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  album  "Horizon"  which  will  be  released  in  June.

Dark  soundscapes  and  neo-classical  style  synths  start  off  the  album  while  the  throat  singing  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling.  Percussion  can  also  be  heard  at t imes  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  male  and  female  choirs  as  well  as  the  violins  also  bringing  in  elements  of  folk  music.

At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  a  movie  soundtrack  while  the  synths  also  add  in  influences  of  dark  ambient  and  dungeon  synth.  Some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  each  song  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  as  well  as  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  clean  pagan  vocals  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard.

On  this  recording  Aklash  moves  away  from  the  atmospheric  black  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  brings  in  more  of  a  ritualistic  mixture  of  neo-classical,  folk,  dungeon  synth  and  dark  ambient  to  create  something  very  different.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  Heathenism  and  Spirituality  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Aklash  and  while  some  black  metal  fans  might  not  like  the  direction,  I  can  see  this  album  appealing  to  fans  of  folk,  neo-classical,  dungeon  synth  and  dark  ambient.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Darkness  Unfolds"  "Soul  Depart"  and  "Transcend".  8  out  of  10.

DÖMD  are  a  solo  project  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  very  raw  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2021  demo  "I  skuggan  av  ringmuren".

A  very  hard  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  demo  along  with  some  drum  beats  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  tremolo  picking  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  good  balance  between  old  school  and  modern  influences  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  folk  instruments  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction.

DÖMD  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  traditional  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  myths,  folklore,  nature  and  darkness  themes.
