Narrenwind/The Joker, The Thief And The D.R.A.G.O.N/Wheelwright Productions/2020 Single Review

mercredi 25 mars 2020 à 20:25

Narrenwind  are  a  band  with  members  from  Poland  and  Norway  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  epic,  atmospheric  and  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  single  "The  Joker,  The  Thief  And  The  D.R.A.G.O.N"  which  was  released  by  Wheelwright  Productions  and  consists  of  one  original  track  and  a  Bob  Dylan  cover.

Clean  playing  starts  off  the  single  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Vocals  are  done  in  a  very  deep  style  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  elements  of  70's  progressive  rock  as  well  as  both  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  more  of  a  classic  rock  style.  Their  cover  track  is  also  more  heavier  and  different  than  the  original  version  and  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  style  as  well  as  spoken  word  parts  also  being  used  on  both  songs,  psychedelic  touches  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

On  this  recording  Narrenwind  takes  their  music  into  more  of  a  progressive  blackened  metal  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Shamanism  and  Mythology  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Narrenwind  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  single.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "All  ALong  The  Watchtower".  8  out  of  10.

Black Vice Interview

mercredi 25 mars 2020 à 09:48
1.You have a new album coming out during the end of March, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

“The Alchemist’s Vision” is the culmination of three years of writing, touring, lineup changes and all manners of creative expansions and disruptions.  The 2017 split was a premonition of this; an introduction to what would eventually become this release.  Here you have the most succinct tangible representation of the band as it currently exists.

2.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer release and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Black Vice has evolved quite rapidly since inception.  What once began as an experiment in musical performance has become something much more focused.  This is evident on The Alchemist’s Vision - in both concept and arrangement - as the songwriting is cleaner and more mature while maintaining the raw elements that have always been present.  Thematically the album explores the creation of human consciousness in a linear format: from beginning to the inevitable end.  During the writing process these elements were purposefully incorporated into each song and the order in which they appear on the record is the order in which they were conceived.

3.You also have some lyrics that touch on occult and anti cosmic themes on the albums, can  you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

What lies behind the veil of perception is the essence of all things.  Through a collective synchronicity (be it music, performance, ritual, meditation, what have you) we can attempt manipulation and, hopefully, a greater understanding of not only what guides our own consciousness but the nature of that experience in itself.  I would not call this a “dark art”, although there is indeed darkness to be found if one goes looking in that direction.

4.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

We actually struggled to find the right artistic representation that would correctly portray the overall feel and message of this album.  In the past we have commissioned pieces from artists who not only understood the music but also the underlying concept - Give Up did a fantastic job on “Rituals of the Anti-Cosmic Doctrine”, and Unknown Relic knew immediately what we were asking for on the split with Haunter, so the challenge was to find someone who could offer the same quality and understanding of the material, which was not an easy task.  Ultimately we decided on Necfrost, as he was not only interested in the project but seemed to fundamentally understand how to convey the subject in a unique and visually pleasing way.

5.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

Bringing The Alchemist’s Vision to stage is something we would like to make happen in the near future.  That said, the circumstances that surround those opportunities are making things difficult for everyone at the moment, so we will have to wait to see how developments unfold.  Black Vice is always interested in  bringing a live performance to those interested.

6.One of the band members also runs 'Red River Family Records', what are some of the releases you have planned for 2020 so far?

That would be Tyrant. Having a close relationship with Red River Family Records has been incredible, not only for Black Vice but for underground music fans all over the world.  He does a lot of work and is very passionate about that scene, and it shows.  Those interested in such should be keeping an eye on the website and purchasing tapes and records from the online store, as the majority of those releases have been quite good.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Black Vice performances are always unique, and over the years they have gotten to be more intimate and engaging.  In the early iterations of the band, we would incorporate meditative practices and ethereal soundscapes using a variety of instruments and methods in an effort to elevate the self into a psychoactive state.  A few years ago we moved away from that and decided on a more ceremonial approach in dress and stage design.  The avian skull mask is an effort to remove the human aspect from the band and to give the performance a somewhat unnerving atmosphere that is fitting for the music.

8.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

That is yet to be seen.  As the path unveils itself we are powerless to do anything but follow.

Perchta/Ufang/Prophecy Productions/2020 CD Review

mercredi 25 mars 2020 à 08:10

Perchta  is  a  solo  project  from  Austria  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  ritualistic  form  of  pagan  black  metal  with  some  elements  of  folk  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Ufang"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Prophecy  Productions.

A  nature  orientated  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  while  also  introducing  folk  instruments  onto  the  recording  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  music  also  has  its  ritualistic  moments.  Spoken  word  parts  can  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also gives  the music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts. When  whispers  are  utilized  they  also  enhance  the  more  ritualistic  side  of  the  music  and  when  clean  singing  and  chants  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  more  of  a  shamanistic  atmosphere,  when  solos  and  leads  are  finally  added  onto  the  recording  they  are  also  done  in  a  melodic  style  and  the  album  alternates  between  black  metal  and  ritualistic  folk  tracks.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  Paganism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Perchta  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  atmospheric  pagan  black  metal  and  ritualistic  folk  music  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Erdin"  "Summa"  and  "Winta".  8  out  of  10.

mardi 24 mars 2020 à 20:25

Two  Face  Sinner  are  a  band  from  Peru  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Spiritual  Nemesis"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Non  Serviam  Records.

A  very  fast,  heavy  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  death  metal  growls  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.  Dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  a  great  amount  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  guitar  solos  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  style.

A lot  of  the  music  is  also  rooted  in  the  90's  era  but  mixed  in  with  a  more  modern  aggression  along  with all  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction  and  the  closing  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Anti  Christianity  and  Misanthropy  themes.

In  my  opinion  Two  Face  Sinner  are  a  very  great  sounding  fast  and  aggressive  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Invoking  Evil"  "Servants  Of  Blind  Faith"  "Triumphant  Satan"  and  "Mother  Death".  8  out  of  10.

Omnikinetic/Kinesis/Repose Records/2020 EP Review

mardi 24 mars 2020 à 07:52

Omnikinetic  is  a  solo  project  from  Portland,  Oregon  that  plays  a  mixture  of  war  and  blackened  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  ep  "Kinesis"  which  was  released  by  Repose  Records.

A  very  dark,  brutal  and  cavernous  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  bestial  growls  a  few  seconds  later.  Elements  of  death  metal  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  dissonant  structures  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  war  metal  influences  can  also  be  heard.

Black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  At  times  the  music  also  evokes  a  very  dark  atmosphere  as  well  as  only  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  and  all  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

Omnikinetic  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  war  and  blackened  death  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  spiritual  themes.

In  my  opinion  Omnikinetic  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  raw  and  blackened  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Leading  The  Pack"  and  "Chronokinesis  (Time  Control)".  8  out  of  10.
