Nogrod Interview

jeudi 7 juillet 2016 à 18:23
1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

1.We're a Blackened Death Metal band from the Northeastern Corner of India. We always wanted to do something in our local scene; we wanted to do something different here. That is how Nogrod took its form. Though we're a Black Metal band, we're not Satanic. Not all Black Metal bands are Satanic, that's a stereotype. We're of humanistic view. Humanism before anything.

2.In May you had released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

2. We tried sticking to the roots. We wanted the raw and the old Black Metal sound in our Ep. That's what we tried to do.

3.Your lyrics cover a lot of anti religion topics, can you tell us a little bit more about your hatred for religion?

3. Religion has been eating our civilization since its beginning. It has been deteriorating human society. It is the worst man made plague the world has ever seen.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Nogrod'?

4. The word Nogrod is taken from the language Khuzdul invented by J. R. R. Tolkien. During the Years of the Trees the western Fathers of the Dwarves awoke from beneath Mount Dolmed creating the lines of the Broadbeams and the Firebeards. These two houses built the great Dwarven cities of Nogrod and Belegost in the Blue Mountains. We chose the Dwarves of LOTR because they were the most richest, the most dignified and they completed their quests; though help from many others, they're the ones who defeated evil in the end.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

5. For now, the band's main interest is to write quality stuffs. We're giving the preference to our compositions as of now. But we do have many tours upcoming throughout our country and we'll try to do foreign tours after we release a full length album next year.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

6. Yes, we have all India tours upcoming this year and the next. We'll try foreign tours after we do the full length album.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

7. Yes, we have received a couple of interests. We would like to remain unsigned as of now. We'll try for good labels after the full length album.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

8. In terms of the local scene, the feedback is massive. All underground fans and that's what we want. We don't want a fake fan following. We mentioned the word massive because the fans we have now are real metal lovers unlike the new age so called metalheads. You know, ha ha !

And in terms of international scene, we have a credible response from the UK, US, Europe and a few from Australia. No response from the Middle-east. We hope the Middle-east revives from the wars ignited by the dangerous man made plague we mentioned earlier.

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

9. The full length album is due next year. As in our bio, we try to keep getting better day by day without diverging from our roots.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

10. As a band, we are highly influenced by Dark Funeral, Belphegor, Watain, Dissection, Behemoth, Emperor and even the Indian band Heathen Beast. Individually, we're influenced by several others. Even from many other genres and we love Indian Classical Music very much.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

11. Apart from music, some of us are into traveling & exploration, some of us are into Martial Arts. Rohan likes to read lots of books, know more stuffs and travel extensively. Bhaskar is into MMA and is a Fitness enthusiast. Dhiraj and Ritu (new addition to our band) are bikers and travelers.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

12. Before we wrap up, we highly appreciate this interview. Thank you very much. Our thoughts are to represent the local scene Nationally and Globally if possible. Watch out for us. We'll be rising and help others too.

Thank you once again. See you soon.

Valborg/Bloodway/Karbon Winter/2016 Collaboration EP Review

jeudi 7 juillet 2016 à 15:27

This  is  a  review  of  a  collaboration  between  Germany's  Valborg  who  play  more  of  a  doom/death metal  style  and  Romania's  Bloodway  a  band  that  has  been  reviewed  before  by  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  progressive  and  avant  garde  form  of  black  metal  and  they  mix  their  2  separate  styles  together  on  this  self  released  ep  which  is  called  "Karbon  Winter".

A  very  distorted,  heavy  yet  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with some  death  metal  growls  and  you  can  also  hear  elements  of  doom  and  avant  garde  metal  in  the  music  along  with  the  riffs  also  using  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sound  powerful  and a fter  awhile   black  metal  influences are  added  into  the  music.

When  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  remain  true  to  a  very  dark  and  melodic   style  while  also  adding  progressive  elements  into  the  music  and  the  keyboards  give  the music  more  of  an  atmospheric  and  avant  garde  style  and  clean  guitars  are  added  onto  the  second  track  and  both  of  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

Valborg  and  Bloodway  mix  their  2  different  styles  together  to  create  a  musical  style  that  I  would  probably  describe  as  being  an  avant  garde  and  progressive  form  of  blackened  doom  metal,  the production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  winter  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collaboration  between  Valborg  and  Bloodway  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  avant  garde  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Karbon  Winter".  8  out  of  10.

Frozen Forest/Ancient Ritual/2016 Full Length Review

jeudi 7 juillet 2016 à 14:58

Frozen  Forest  are  a  band  from  Croatia  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  unholy  form  of  black  metal and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2016  album  "Ancient  Ritual".

A  very  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction  that  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  and  the  solos  and  riffs  can  also  be  very  melodic  at  times  while  the  vocals  are  high  pitched  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  while t he  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  influences  and  some  of  the  riffs  also  bring  in  elements  of  thrash  and  Swedish  style  black  metal  and  there  are  a  couple  of  the  tracks  that  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  on  some  tracks  the  solos  and  leads  bring  in  more  of  an  80's  style  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

Frozen  Forest  plays  a  style  of  black  metal t hat  is  very  raw  and  melodic  in  the  90's  Swedish  second  wave  tradition,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Armageddon  and  Anti  Christianity  themes.

In  my  opinion  Frozen  Forest  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw,  melodic  and  old  school  style  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out t his  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Devil's  Grin  Retaliation"  "Claws  Of  Infinity"  and  "Evil  Metal".  8  out  of  10.

Isgarde Interview

jeudi 7 juillet 2016 à 11:06
1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Not much to tell. I am Somath of ISGÄRDE and I live on the island Öland in Sweden and find a great outlet in my life in solitude to compose music that celebrates nature basically and living a life far from the modern world.

2.So far you have released one album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

Majestic, raw, violent, atmospheric.

3.You refer to your music as 'Olandsk black metal' can you tell us a little bit more about this term?

As I dedicate this whole project to where I live, the life on an island, I call my music Öländsk black metal because it is really what inspire me and I am probably the only on ever using that term. It is what separates me from the rest.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your music?

Nature, life on an island, mystery, magic, solitude and especially melancholy. If melancholy wasn't rooted so hard in my soul ISGÄRDE wouldn't exist.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Isgarde'?

Isgärde is actually a place on Öland. I find the name very intriguing and as soon as I thought about it it clicked for me. This music will go under that name. That's really it.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

Yes I do perform and produce everything myself. I used my friend Emil (Yxmarder) of the black metal band Blodsrit to master it. I did have to guest musicians on the album making the intro and outro. The intro was made by Filip Lönnqvist of Rave the Reqviem and the outro by Lord Aganaroth of Sapfhier/WAN. But for the main songs I doubt having any one else involved except for live performances, if that would ever happen. I just don't see the point in working with anyone else because I have my vision clear.

7.The new album was released on both Symbol Of Domination Productions and Black plague Records, are you happy with the support they have given you so far?

Yes, very so. Everything seems to work well.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

All reviews I've seen so far has been very positive and supportive. That's pleasant.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I do not plan intellectually when I write music. It has to be all on feel. I hardly think when I record and I do everything very fast because I want to capture the moment. It is almost psychedelic. Hard to explain.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

This is often surprising for some, but I do not listen a lot to music. Hardly any black metal for example. I like to write and listen to my own music. Of course occasionally i listen to music but seldom metal to be honest. It could be really any genre. Music is music to me. I dislike labeling.

11.Does Paganism or Occultism play any role in your music?

In a way yes but I see things my way so I can not say that paganism or occultism by those terms and meanings to someone else apply for me. Many times people are pleased by word games. I am not.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I will be working with new material probably this fall or winter. Thanks for the interest in ISGÄRDE.

Deviser Interview

mercredi 6 juillet 2016 à 16:27
1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

First of all a big thank you for this interview and all the best for the occult blackmetal zine. These days we are focused in the composition process and pre-production of the new tracks. We try to be 100% ready for the new album. Clearly there is a delay time but this was clear our choice, at least for the standard we have set. We will not accept to make just a simple movement, but an album that will come to stay!!

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the current material?

The new tracks sound like Deviser more than ever...  simply imagine the harshness and brutality of “Transmission To Chaos” and a mix of melodic dark/black and dreamlike  atmosphere  of “Unspeakable Cults” with the personal sound and stamp of Deviser.

3. There has been no new music in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?

During these five years we haven’t any important news. We haven’t any official album release, but only some album re-issues. We prefer to release something only when we are ready to do it and when we have something to give to the people, than just to release something that is not represent us.

4. In the beginning the music was more in a death/thrash direction before evolving into more of a black metal style, what was the decision behind going into this musical direction?

There is no music direction and no specific sense of style. We are playing with a simply, truly and clearly way. The style is affected differently by each member influences. Don’t forget that Deviser started as a one man project band in 1989 by Matt Hnaras in island of Crete and 4 years later the band became a full line up band.  So, as you can understand, it’s logic to have different influences and the sound of Deviser changes from time to time!!

5. Some of your lyrics have occult themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?

Our lyrics have several elements like occult, Chtulu etc. The guy who is responsible for this is Matt Hnaras, who writes the lyrics. “Unspeakable Cults” specifically, refers to the whole album with the aim to give an unspeakable and dreamy description in order to overwhelm the listener in other situations, not has ever experienced before..

6. You have also talked about how H.P Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard and Stephen King have influenced some of the lyrics, are there any other authors that you are influenced by?

The artists you mentioned before are the main influences of our lyrics. A good example for how we are influenced by them are the lyrics of “Unspeakable Cults”

7. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Deviser'?

The meaning of Deviser:
Deviser is someone who invents, who devises new situations and builds innovative new things. So we are trying to invent and devis3e new situations and emotions through our music... We Are DEVISER!!!!

8. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We had many live performances through all these years. Some of the best shows we had, were  with bands like:

Venom, Virgin Steel, Emperor, Theatre of Tragedy, Rotting Christ (Metal Invader Festival, Olympic stadium-Athens)

UDO – Anathema (Chania Rock Festival)

And several additional shows with bands like:
Tiamat, Lacuna Coil, Lake of Tears, Ancient Rites, Septic Flesh, Rotting Christ etc.

Now I consider  that our stage performance is simple and essential, like an early Kreator show.  But we prefer that we will be judged by our fans and not to speak about our shows ourselves!

9. Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

When we release the new album we will have more news about Lives, Tours etc. This will clearly be our priority but it’s still too early to say more about....

9. Recently Sleaszy Rider Records re-issued your 1996 album, what are your thoughts on the final product?

We are completely satisfied with the final result from the reissue  of “Unspeakable Cults”.  The album is re-released on 28/06/2016 in Deluxe Digipack CD incl.  Bonus Track. It’s also available in a limited bundle Edition (CD +T-shirt) and a Pictured LP will be released from Sleaszy Rider Records soon. The label proved once again that it is a great company. We are completely satisfied about this cooperation and for sure we will continue our cooperation in the future..

10. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

The feedback was particularly warm and enthusiastic all these years, especially with the “Unspeakable Cults” and “Transmission to chaos” albums. We got many positive comments from the worldwide’s metal scene..

11. What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

It’s true that some members of Deviser were involved in other band’s projects. That has it’s positive side, because they acquired some more experience etc. Priority of all of us is clearly our band.
Some bands that we have worked in the past are
Kawir, Chaosbaphomet, Nocternity etc.

12. When can we expect new material and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I believe that we will be ready for our new Release during 2017. We thing everything else will only come with good music and an album that will stigmatize the metal scene generally. Maybe it will be the sequel of “Unspeakable Cults”...

13. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

We had many influences from many styles. From Rock (Pink Floyd, Eloy etc) up to giants of metal scene (Slayer, Bathory, Mayhem, Kreator, Celtic Frost etc)
These days in my sound system plays unstoppable the “Rituals” of Rotting Christ which I find magnificent!!

14. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I want to thank you for this interview. I wish the best for occult blackmetal zine and to convey a big “Thank you” to those who are supporting us all these years and keep us alive. I believe we will reward them soon.
In addition I would like to inform our fans about the Anniversary Edition (Re-issue) of “Unspeakable Cults”. It’s available now in deluxe Digipack CD with T-shirt and soon in Pictured LP from Sleaszy Rider Records.
