Gravstenad/Hogtid/2021 Full Length Review

  Gravstenad  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  very  aggressive  form  of  black  metal  with  some  elements  of  doom  and  stoner  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  album  "Hogtid".


  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  influences  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.


  Elements  of  doom  and  stoner  metal  are  also  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  old  school  extreme  metal  style  along  with  the  vocals  also  having  their  grim  moments  as  well  as  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  one  of  the  tracks  also  introduces  growls  onto  the  recording  and  all  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.


  Gravstenad  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  a  traditional  form  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  stoner  and  doom  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  evil  themes.


  In  my  opinion  Gravstenad  are  a  very  great  sounding  aggressive  mixture  of  black,  stoner  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ursinne"  "Draug"  and  "Du  och  Jag".  8  out  of  10.

Goat Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

First of all titanic hails from Greece.Goat was formed back in 2000.Soon after i was totally addicted to the titans Impiety,Sarcofago,Thou Art Lord,Basphemy,Mortuary Drape,Von,Beherit,Shub Niggurath,Archgoat,Deicide,Marduk,Faceless God,Impaled Nazarene,Root.The band's first rehearsal was recorded in 2001 named 'GOAT' and the second 'BURNING SKY’ in 2002.After 2003 the band went into on hold mode.In 2011 i brought back from the dead all old stuff and started some rehearsings but nothing serious was done untill 2019 .So in that year i reanimated the line up and into 2020 finally the debut full length was recorded.


2.In November you had released your first full length, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Only all old stuff is included on the album (written between 2000-2003 and instrumentals written between 2006-2007 plus Blasphemy cover) so the only difference is the sound.Back then i liked more abyssic and primitive sound close to Von and Beherit ,now i prefer more bestial and violent style close to the mighty Impiety and Thou Art Lord.


3.The band went on a 7 year hiatus from 2004 and 2011, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

I moved to Germany for some years.I had no time to find some session members and my german speech was totally bad.The only thing was done is the instrumentals ,together with Askalaphos(Goat,Dark Shadow,Dark Messiah,Fullmoon Cult)between 2006-2007 when i came back to Greece for some months.


4.While the band got back together in 2011 you waited until 2020 to release any newer music, can you tell us a little bit more about the delays?

The reason one is the line up changes that cost us a lot of time and the second reason also it needs money and time to serve ,which goes to Askio productions(label-distro) i created back in 2015 together with the  good friend SkS (owner of Morbid Visions YouTube Channel).


5.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Lyrics spread the violence against evrything that puts my mental and physical freedom in danger.About music ,yes there is musical progress from amateur violence to technical violence(i'm not violent individual ,but i enjoy sparring fights).


6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Goat'?

Greatest Of All Time...hahaha... when i was searching for the name i was listenning to Archgoat ,so then i cut the Arch from the Goat.And with that short name was easy for me to create a unique logo.


7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I choose to not follow the trend (black and white goats with weapons) on this album ,but i follow the trend on Goat promo 2020.I thing the artwork expresses the music in the right way.About the artist ,he is from Kazakhstan and he was making cover arts for fantasy books.


8.Has the band done any live shows or is this strictly a studio project?

Goat is strictly a studio project.


9.The album was released by Tanatofobia Productions, how did you get in contact with this label?

SkS got in contact with Tanatofobia Productions and soon he replied  us for releasing  the album on cd.Big thanks to Tanatofobia Productions for the interest he show to us.Yet the album will be released soon on tape via the american label Mospharic. 


10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of war, black and death metal?

I am little bit surprised ,because i did not wait so much response.And yes reaction is mostly good(especially from Latin America and Europe).


11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

The newer matterial is more agressive and technically violent.So in the future our music will be as much as possible total violent.I call the music of Goat HELLENIC BLACK METAL VIOLENCE.


12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I am addicted to the titans Impiety,Sarcofago,Thou Art Lord,Basphemy,Mortuary Drape,Von,Beherit,Shub Niggurath,Archgoat,Deicide,Marduk,Faceless God,Impaled Nazarene,Root.Nowadays i listen Inquisition,Bethor,Schizoparanoic Platoon,Wargoat,Human Serpent and some others.


13.Does Satanism or Occultism play any role in your music?

Absolutely no ,i do not care about satans ,allahs ,gods ,these stories are not for me.Violent mass ,go for the kill or to be killed ,nothing more nothing less. 


14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Serpent Moon Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?



Serpent Moon arose mainly out of necessity. 2020 was a difficult year for everyone and I needed an outlet to cope. The seeds had been planted a long time ago, of course, but a slew of personal traumas throughout the year really inspired me to make it happen. 



2.So far you have released 3 ep's, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?


I wanted to make something really ugly. I was going through a horrible period in my life and wanted to create something as disgusting as I felt at the time. I'm honestly not too sure how successful I was on that front. As the sound evolved I found my mind wandering into a more melodic place often throughout the recordings. 



3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the music?


All of Serpent Moon's lyrics come from a deeply personal place.  I've written about relationships, mental health, mortality, that kind of stuff. I'm not out looking to say anything profound, rather to let go some demons and get those feelings across. 


4.Your music also avoids the use of traditional guitars, can you tell us a little bit more about using the bass guitar as the main lead instrument on your recordings?


At the time of writing these songs, the guitar just wasn't really exciting me the way it used to.  I've been playing guitar for fifteen years and I just wanted to focus on a different medium.  I think the piano and bass combo has lent itself the feeling of the songs really well.  I'm not ruling out incorporating the guitar into Serpent Moon's music in the future, but I can say I miss it right now. 



5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Serpent Moon'?


The idea of snakes shedding their skin and the moon going through its cycle is really comforting to me.  The idea of rebirth. I guess it's kind of a hopeful positive to counterbalance the negativity in the songs themselves. 



6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the compilation cover?


The image to me is very lonely. There's a strong  sense of isolation I get from looking at it.  I felt like it matched the sound I was putting out pretty well. 



7.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?


I've become pretty accustomed to working solo, but I never say never. I would absolutely love to put together a live group, if we ever get things back to normal, that is. 


8.Recently you have released all 3 of your ep's on a single album, can you tell us a little bit more about the decision behind releasing a compilation?


I prefer the idea of a full length album, but I find myself getting a bit impatient while the songs come together. Releasing the album in chunks and then compiling it all together made things a little smoother for me mentally. 



9.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?


I haven't had any takers yet, but I'm open to the idea and have sent out a few feelers. 



10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of depressive black, sludge and funeral doom metal?


Reactions have been really great. I wasn't sure that this was going to be something that anyone but me was ever going to hear. Knowing that people are listening and enjoying it is pretty overwhelming. 



11.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?


I think a full length is on the horizon, but I want to do it right.  When it chimes it will be a cohesive piece of music and not a collection of songs. 



12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?


Kanamishi and Mournful Congregation are two bands without whom Serpent Moon wouldn't exist. Those are huge influences on the concept. My musical taste is a little all over the place but I've mostly been catching up on some classic black metal lately. 



13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts? 


I'd just like to thank everyone who listened to the EPs or has preordered the compilation so far.  It really means a lot to me that others are connecting to the music the way I did.

Alkerdeel/Slonk/Babylong Doom Cult Records/Consouling Sounds/2021 Full Length Review

  Belgium's  Alkerdeel  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  a  mixture  of  raw  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Slonk"  which  will  be  released  in  February  as  a  joint  effort  between  Babylon  Doom  Cult  Records  and  Consouling  Sounds.


  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  and  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  ambient  style  synths  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  can  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.


  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.


  At  times  the  vocals  also  add  in  some  angry   shouts  along  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dissonant  style.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  the  bands  native  tongue  and  cover  surrealism  themes.   


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Akerdeel  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  raw  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Vier"  and  "Trok".  8  out  of  10.

DSKNT/Vacuum y-Noise Transition/Sentient Ruin Laboratories/2021 CD Review

  DSKNT  are  a  duo  from  Switzerland  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  dissonant  and  avant  garde  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a review  of  their  2021  album  "Vacuum  y-Noise  Transition"  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  Sentient  Ruin  Laboratories.


    Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  war  metal  elements  tremolo  picking  and  blast beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  raw  feeling.


  Bestial  growls  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  dissonant  structures.  Black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  album  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  distorted  style.


  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  avant  garde  sounding  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  elements  of  harsh  noise  into  the  music  and  as  the  album  progresse4s  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  cosmological  themes,  void,  unexistence  and  abstract  concepts.  


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  DSKNT  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant  garde  and  dissonant  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Deconvolution J_ψ"  and  "Deconvolution Ξ-0 (Part II)".  8  out  of  10.
