Natanas/Eram Numquan Amicum Vestrum/2016 Full Length Review

mercredi 3 février 2016 à 23:44

Natanas  are  a  solo  project  from  Wyoming  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw  and  depressive  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2016  album  "Eram Numquan Amicum Vestrum".

A  powerful bass  guitar  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  it  slowly  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  doom  metal  direction  along  with  some  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  some  distorted guitar  leads  at  times  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

A  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  brings  in  elements  of  both  funeral  and  death/doom  and  when  acoustic  guitars  are  added  onto  the  recording  they use  full  chords  that  also  gives  the music  more  of  an  avant  garde  feeling  as  well  as  taking  the  music  into  more  of  an  experimental  direction  while  some  of  the  distortion  gives  the  music  a  touch  of  drone  and  all  of  the  songs  also  stick  to  a  very  slow  musical  style  and  on  the  last  song guitar  leads  also  make  a  return  for  a  few  seconds.

On  this  recording  Natanas  takes  a  depressive  style  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  the  slowest,  darkest  and  heaviest  style  of  primitive  doom  metal  to  create  a  musical  style  of  his  own,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Misanthropy,  Esotericism  and  Suicide  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Natanas  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal  and  doom,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Operae  Nostrae  Vicaria  Cruenti"  "Ficken  Kolassalen  Totalausfall"  "Est  Vita  Mea  Stercoe"  and  "Uterque  Proicit  Ampullas".  8  out  of  10.

Sintenza/Adunata/Inch Productions/2015 EP Review

mercredi 3 février 2016 à 21:55

Sintenza  are  a  band  from Italy  that  plays a  very  raw,  blasphemous  and  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  ep  "Adunata"  which  was  released by  Inch  Productions.

A  very  heavy,  fast  and  raw  black  metal sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  blast  beats  as  well  as  some  high  pitched  screams  a  few  seconds  later  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  tradition  along  with  the  guitar  riffing  utilizing  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  very  dark, raw  and  melodic.

Throughout  the  recording  you can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  some  of  the  riffs  also  bring  in  dark  sounding  melodies  and  you  can  also  hear  the  bass  guitar  in  the  background  at  times  and  when  growls  are  utilized  for  a  few  seconds  they  give  the  songs  a  touch  of  death  metal.

Sintenza  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  evil,  raw  and  old  school  in t he  true  second  wave  tradition,  the  production sounds  very  dark  and raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Latan  and  cover  Satanism  and Anti  Christian  themes.

In  my  opinion  Sintenza  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  blasphemous,  satanic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Scunfitta  Eterna"  and  "Corra".  8  out  of  10.

FT-17 Interview

mercredi 3 février 2016 à 19:21
1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

FT-17 is an extreme melodic metal band from France. Half of us also play in Ad Extirpenda. Aside from this, we have a pianist, a narrator -who plays a key rôle since our album is nothing but a story-, and a special performance from soprano Soazg Couëdel on one track.
The band was realy built up around the story to tell.

2.Recently you have released your fist album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

The purpose of the album is to tell a story, hence we did not focus on a given style. This is mostly melodic death/black metal but there are thrash, heavy, gothic and doom elements for instance.

This is the same for the sound. It can be sometimes raw, harsh and sometimes more depressing. There were of course a guideline to conserve the homogeneity of the whole structure. For instance, there is no keyboard aside from the piano.

I think the most difficult part was to render it during the mix. Hopefully, we had the chance to work with Vamacara studio and the result is amazing as you can hear.

3.The lyrics deal with World War I, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?

We're actually right in the middle of the century of this war. I think WWI is underexposed when you compare with WWII for instance. However, this is a crucial and critical part of history.
It was the first modern war in many aspects. Hopefully, there are tons of archives, especialy letters from soldiers.

I read a lot of these letters, particularly those written by 5 different men who served as a basis in the construction of Marcellin's character.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'FT-17'?

Well, at a first glance, FT-17 is the codename of a light tank manufactured by Renault and which is often called «the victory tank» or «the father of all tanks». While it was not the first tank to be used in combat, it had a revolutionary design that inspired all modern tanks. It was one of the reasons of the allies' victory. Yes, allies were way ahead German's technology on tanks back then!

There is also a secret meaning deeply related to the story but I will keep the secret on that for now.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

At first, the band was not meant to play live. So we didn't play any concerts as FT-17 yet.
However, since we are really happy with the album, we decided to prepare for a little tour.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Yes, we are currently planning a few dates in the end of spring. It is too early to give details yet.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Well, if a serious label is interested, we'll be happy of course.
8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

Really very good up to now. We hope that it will continue.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

It is too early to speak about the future beyond the tour since FT-17 was created as a side-project.
However, if the feedback continues to be that good, who knows.

10.What are some of the bands and musical styles that have influenced the music of Ft-17'?

There are tons of them and it is not possible to cite every one. Among the most obvious let's cite Death, Moonspell, Dark Tranquillity, Emperor, Enslaved, Iron Maiden, Arcturus, Borknagar...
There are also a few classical and jazz musicians of course.

11.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanks for the interview!
We'll be happy to talks about our music or the story, so if someone has an opinion, he's welcome to contact us.

Let us finish by paying tribute to all soldiers and civilians who where victims of WWI.

A  very  hard  and  heavy  guitar  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  after  a  few  seconds  grim  screams  are  added  into  the  music  that  also  almost  border  on  growls  at times  as  well  as  some  melodies  being  added  into  the  music  in  both  the  rhythms  and  guitar  leads  while  the  vocals  also  get somewhat  melodic  at  times  while  still  having  a  roughness  to  them.

Elements  of  death  metal  can  be  heard in  the  music  at  times  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  when  synths  are  utilized  they  give  the  songs  more  of  an  epic  feeling  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  chants  are  utilized  they  give  the  music  more  of  a  pagan  atmosphere.

When  the  music  speeds  up  it  brings  in  more  of a  raw  style  of  black  metal  along  with  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  guitars  along  with  folk  instruments  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  songs  and  towards  the  end  melodic  clean  singing  makes  its  presence  known  while  some  riffs  also  start  displaying  an  influence  of  thrash.

Protean  plays  a  style  of  pagan  metal  that  is  very  epic  while  also  bringing  in  elements  of  black  and  death  metal  to  create  an  original  recording,  the  production  sound s very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the Punic  Wars,  Northmen  Sagas,  Latvian  Mythology,  and  Legends  of  Foreign  Sorceror  lords.

In  my  opinion  Protean  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  pagan/black  metal  band  and  if  you are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Black  Army"  "Swordwraith"  and  "Sorceror  Baron". 8  out  of  10.

A  very  dark,  melodic  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  once  the  fast  pitched  screams  kick  in t he  music  starts  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  direction  that  also  utilizes  a  great  amount of  blast  beats  and  the  fast  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  melodies  at  times.

Throughout  the  whole  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  a  great  amount  of  riffing  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  style  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  starts  evoking  more  of  a  depressive  atmosphere  along  with  a  few  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  one  song  also  brings  in  a brie f use  of  spoken  word  samples  and  the  music  also  always  remains  true  to  a  very  heavy,  dark  and  raw  musical  direction.
