Adore/Wanderers Of Oblivion/2015 CD Review

  Adore  are a  1 woman  black  metal  from  Texas  that  plays  an  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review   of  her  self  released  2015  album  Wanders  Of  Oblivion".

  A  very  dark,  melodic  and  atmospheric sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  drum  beats  and  the  synths  also  have  a  very  powerful  sounding  presence  on  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  some  deeper  vocals  being  utilized  at  times  while  the solos  and  leads  that  are  utilized  are  very  raw  and  melodic  sounding.

  A  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  faster sections  displaying more  of  a  raw  black  metal  sound  and  at  times the  songs  have  a  90's  feeling  to  them  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  music  gets  more  diverse.

  A  few  of  the  tracks  bring  in  Cernunnos  of  Haeresiarchs  Of  Dis  on  back  up  vocals  and  on  the  later  tracks  the  synths  start  getting  more  dark  and  haunting  sounding  as  well  as  using  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  on  some  of  the  songs  and  also  bring  in  a  touch  of ambient  while  the  vocals  and  guitars  still  dominate  most  of  the  tracks  and  there  are  also  some  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  parts  being utilized  briefly  on  a  couple  of  the  songs.  

  Adore  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw,  melodic ,  depressive  and  atmospheric  sounding  and  there  is  a  lot  of  variety  in  the  songs,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  cosmos/galactic,  mythological,  mystical, paranormal  and  historical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Adore  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Mystic,  Transcendent  Spirit"  "The  All-Deceiving"  "Cold  World"  and  "The  Hidden  Path".  8  out  of  10.

MRTVI Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

MRTVI is a solo/one man project that I decided to start last year as a way to write some songs in a slightly different style to anything I had done before. I wanted to develop my guitar playing and song-writing, and my vocal style, basically to push myself into unfamiliar territory.

2.You have a new album coming out, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

The album is rooted in Black Metal I guess, although I'm trying to make it a bit more experimental, I don't want to make the same music that I listen to or that's already out there, because it already exists! The joy of music is that there are a lot of different flavours that you can play with and rearrange and have fun with. I really like the avant-garde aspect of black metal too, so I'm trying to go down that rabbit hole with this project.

3.According to the facebook page you refer your musical sound as 'Negative Atonal Dissonance', can you tell us a little bit more about the term?

Negative refers to the sound and aesthetic that some bands have that seems so nihilistic or 'anti' music, anti 'melody', that it kind of seems like it's not even music! Atonal and Dissonant is similar in that a lot of avant garde bands seem to be doing away with any sort of expectations in terms of structure, melody or any sort of rules that have been laid down before. I want to try and break away from anything that you might expect as a listener, and for this project specifically I want it to be as dark as possible. So I'm aiming to making negative atonal dissonant noise.

4.The lyrics on the new album have a concept involving suicide, can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical content that is presented on the new recording?

The lyrics were quite hard to write at first, I hadn't written any in about 2 years. The first few songs started dealing with themes of depression, existential nihilism and the real possibility that life is meaningless. The idea of the suicide is more hinted at rather than mentioned explicitly, the album opens with the sound of an oncoming train (I live near a train station where a few suicides have happened). I've been reading about and researching ideas of consciousness after death, the unified field in quantum physics, and eastern spirituality, and it seems like a lot of these topics have a lot in common, so I added idea's of rebirth and reincarnation based on the Buddhist ideas of learning from lessons and repeating mistakes etc. as well as the idea of having 'intermediate stages' between lives where you learn about your mistakes, something that's mentioned in a lot of ancient cultures.  Of course, it's also clear that life on this earth can be a struggle, so the idea of perpetual or never ending consciousness could seem like a never ending nightmare.....

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'MRTVI'?

Mrtvi is the Serbian word for the plural of the word 'Dead' (we are/they are dead, as opposed to I/He/she is dead). I decided on the band name before the album or song titles, and I think it fits quite well. You could say we are all in varying degrees of death, or that death itself is just a milestone rather than a definitive end or beginning, more like a road sign than a destination. I also think the word looks quite cool when written down, the only vowel is at teh end so it looks quite jagged and uncomfortable.

6.With this musical project you recorded everything by yourself, do you feel that you could accomplish more musically solo than what you could do with a full band?

Playing with other people is probably the most important part of learning music, other than listening to as much as you can and practicing of course. Writing and creating as a band can be very rewarding too when you join ideas together. I've always found the downside of working in bands is that everything takes 5 times as long because are relying on other people, I don't mean in a negative way, but sometimes your schedules just don't match up. Working solo you can really work as fast or slow on a project as you like, the next step is up to you, which is something I really enjoy because I constantly feel like I should already be working on the next thing! This can be very rewarding but it does mean you take on a lot more work (all of it!). Also if you have a specific idea that you want to use, or you have a vision for a song or sound, it's up to you alone how you do it and when you think it's finished. You're also more vulnerable because you can't blame anyone else for a bit that doesn't quite work hahaha! I like taking ideas or working methods that I've learned from working with bands and trying to develop them on my own, and vice-versa. Working solo is just another way of rearranging those flavours or ideas. Also it seems like these days most bands are started by one or two people who demo everything and then get other people involved to learn the instruments, rather than all getting together and jamming as much. At least for me a lot of projects recently seem to work like that.

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

Well it's still early days, we've got a review through and a couple of zines have announced the album release, but the real feedback is yet to come. Feedback from people already involved with the project and friends and bandmates has been positive so far though. Now I have to wait and see how the wider black metal community accepts it!

8.In the past you have worked with some very well known metal musicians and bands, can you tell us a little bit more about your contributions to their recordings?

I was a touring member of Sarah Jezebel Deva's solo band for about a year and a half. I recorded an EP with that band called Malediction (which is out digitally on Listenable Records) that featured keyboards by Martin Powell of Cradle Of Filth and guest vocals by Dani and also Bjorn from Soilwork. My contribution was mainly just drumming on the recordings. I wrote my own drum parts, which was nice, because if feel like I was able to add my own feel to the songs without having to just repeat programmed parts. Mainly though I was the touring drummer, we did some UK tours and a European tour a couple festivals. I'm very lucky to have been given the opportunity to join a working band and really learn about the industry first hand, seeing professional events put together, living like an animal in a van, and gigging on a daily basis really helped propel me as a musician. I was lucky that everyone in the band was cool too, and we met some really nice people on the way as well! I've also drummed in a band called Rong, which was a project put together by formed Akercocke Keyboardist Rob Archibald. That was a lot of fun, the music was nuts and we certainly had a lot of laughs haha!


9/Are you also currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

I recorded some drums for a band called Mek two weeks ago, it's really fast technical metal, with a lot of black/death flavours in there, as well as some really interesting melodies and rhythms. it was written by another member of that band Rong. The album's getting produced by Matt Hyde who's worked with Slipknot and Machine Head who I listened to a lot when I was younger which is quite cool. I'm looking forward to hearing how it comes out. I'm also working with my friend who mastered the MRTVI album on a psychedelic/prog/pop/rock album that is basically the exact opposite of MRTVI in terms of atmosphere and sound! We also have a hardcore punk band called The CockRockets that is currently on hiatus, we have an album out and will be putting a 3 track EP out too, when the time is right. Actually that album started out as a solo project where I then got other people involved to make it a live band.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?

I would like to play more with bands in styles of rock and metal that I haven't played before in order to learn some new chops. More session work would be great too! I've done some sessions in the past and among musicians that I've been playing with I think the idea of having real drums as opposed to programmed is really important, I would like to be able to track drums from my home then send people files, the internet could be a great tool for creativity once all the likeminded people find each other.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I went from Beatles as a small kid to stuff like Zeppelin and Chili Peppers when I started drumming at 12. It slowly got heavier and heavier over the years. In my late teens I really got into old punk and hardcore, which I think in some ways is really similar to black metal. Now I'm really just trying to find the most experimental music I can. I've really had enough of the basic songs and melodies and rhythms we hear all the time. Recently I've been listening to The Mars Volta quiet a lot, Miles Davis Bitches Brew album is really unique too. I've been checking out some Mahavishnu Orchestra too. Also some Asian traditional music, like Mongolian throat singers, and Japanese Kabuki theatre music. As for metal, I recently discovered a band called Imperial Triumphant who are pretty odd sounding. Working on learning new albums and bands material means that I listen to a lot of those things on repeat too.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

I studied film so arty world cinema is what i like to get stuck into when I'm not playing. I've just got through Nuri Bilge Ceylan's new film Winter Sleep which I can't wait to watch! Making movies is something I'd like to move into once I feel like the music is out of my system, but that won't be for a while yet! I'm also researching and looking into quantum physics and the spiritualities and mythologies of the world as I mentioned before. This 'life' thing is very strange, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it all.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for taking the time to send me this interview and feature my new album! A lot of work goes into making music and I'm really grateful that people are taking an interest!  Hopefully people will check out the album when it comes out at the end of May.

Deeper Vileness Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
1. DV is now a one man band , making raw and ambient music. I originally came up with the idea for Deeper Vileness in the end of 2012 while I was still in highschool , I've always been into a variety of music, but the band that changed my view on music the most was Burzum, following Vikerness words of Advice I aim my music to please myself and not other people , The main influences for the band at this point in time are Burzum, and Sodom.

2.Recently you have released a demo, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
2. The music I wrote under the influence of Sodoms early Work, Burzums early work and various raw bands that have balls like Necrofrost, I was more concerned with putting out music rather than how it sounds, in my view demo's should be raw slabs of evil in metal music. Not overproduced bullshit made with the same programs rappers use to make beats.

3.According to the fb page you prefer to label your music style as 'necro metal', can you tell us a little bit more about this term?
3. The Term Necro-Metal I came up with after watching the documentary Until The Light Takes Us, where Varg describes his sound as "necro sound or corpse like" , I thought it fit the sound well , as Black Metal its self is now run by Rich european kids with good production and rich parents, I've been poor since day one, I've lost many friends in my quest to give everything for music.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
4. Well, I like fantasy and occult type lyrics, While writing the lyrics which I have not published I was reading H.P. Lovecraft, John Dee, Crowley, and Robert E. Howard , A lot of black metal bands have Tolkien influence in their work, I wanted to be different and focus more on Purgatory , Fantasy worlds such as that in Conan or Kull , real swords and sorcery type stuff, I'm also very obssessed with Medieval times.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Deeper Vileness'?
5. Deeper Vileness describes the music I want to make, Dark Music. I honestly ripped the name off from a close friends facebook acount, his url was set to /thedeepervileness ,  it was a tough time in my life as I had just dropped out of highschool , and he had gotten arrested so I had no close friends at that point, so when I saw those words I immediately knew it would make a good band name. As it turns out there is a band who has a song named the deeper vileness , this I did not know at the time.

6.So far this band has been a studio project, are there any plans in the future to expand the line up and do any live shows?
6. I was never able to find any members, Everyone locally is too busy jacking off to deathcore and shit like that. Not that I would want my band to even be associated with this area. Basketball shorts, disco lights, and drum machines, the fuck is that bullshit? the one other member who was going to be in  the group is in jail for stabbing some guy in the face.
We were going to play a show once but the band "lending" us their equipment bitched the fuck out  , the song was Bite it you scum by G.G. allin , Also I personally am banned from playing any local venues for starting too many fights with people. I'd also prefer to remain a solo project, no one can really be depended on.

7.You have a couple of former members incarcerated, what kind of effect has this had on the music and also would you work with these musicians again after they finish their jail sentences and also has this created any controversy for the band?
7. It made me a lot more determined to make music, the other member in jail "Gutsfuk" was one crazy guy, We used to visit graveyards, drive around shouting obscenities at random people, we even got shot at from 10 feet away once just for walking around at night dressed how we do. This has not really affected me musically, my music used to be way angrier to be honest, now it's just very meloncholy. I have no idea when this guy will get out of jail, but when he does I'm going to sign his shit, I lost the recordings we had but it was intense music, if you were to combine Nirvanas angry music with GG allin, thats what it would sound like, people would probably call it black metal but it was straight Noise/punk music. It has caused a bit of controversy locally, but everyone locally just likes to stand around drinking beer and talking shit.  If you aren't 100% evil you have no business making Evil fucking music, all the little wank stain fucks that like to sit at home and wear nice little suits when they arent pretending to be black metal need to fuck off. This isn't some weekend hobby for kids , and people need to start realizing that.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
8. We'll if it is offerred maybe, I hold myself in high regard I would rather self release then be some petty labels Bitch. The labels I have talked to say the music is shit and people will have no interest, Peaceville said the same of Darkthrone and look at them! A lot of people are going to feel very stupid when the debut album comes out.

9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?
9. More Ambient, fuller Distorted atmospheric sounding I suppose. Or I'll probably be dead before releasing anything else.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
10. Burzum changed my life , I hold Vikernes in High regard. Also Tom Angelripper of Sodom, the early shit is raw. Although in ideas I come up with in the more ambient sense, I would say probably classical music, I was at one point training to be a concert pianist but I have a shit sense of timing and I was an antisocial wreck. I've been listening to a lot more classical, darkwave, and punk music. Stuff like christian death, GG allin, soft cell, sisters of mercy, and some judas priest thrown in there...

11.How would you describe your views on Occultism?
11. It's too much to get into with Occultism, Mainly a great amount of metalheads are attracted to it for some reason, but the people that would know the most about the occult would be people like Doctors, lawyers, College proffessors ,people in High standing places, Obviously  brilliant people, If you look into Occultism, all the original Occultists were also scientists, mathmeticians, and astrologists, it is a lot of studying.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
12. Wake me up before you go go , don't leave me hanging on just like a yo yo.....

Despot/Pictures Of The Void/2015 EP Review

  Despot  are  a  duo  from  Brazil  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  raw,  atmospheric  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2015  ep  "Pictures  Of  the  Void".

  Spoken  word  parts  which  also  are  used  on  other  songs  as  well  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  more  of  a  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  direction  and  a  few  seconds  alter  the  music  speeds  up  and  adds  in  blast  beats  and  grim  screams  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  growls  at  times.

  Half  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  you  can  also  heat  both  death  and  thrash  metal  influences  in  the  guitar  riffing  at  times  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  very  dark  and  melodic  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  some  of  the  tracks  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  synths  and  clean  singing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Despot  creates  a  recording  that  is  very  raw,  melodic,  epic  and  atmospheric  and  the  music  goes  for  more  of  a  90's  style  of  black  metal  but  done  with  more  of  an  up  to  date  approach  and  the  music  also  incorporates  elements  of  thrash  and  death  metal  to  make  the  songs  really  stand  out,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  Atheism  and  Literature.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Despot  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw,  melodic  and  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Bound  Forever"  and  "Bastard  Hive".  8  out  of  10.

Shroud Of Despondency/Family Tomb/2015 Full Length Review

  Shroud  Of  Despondency  are  a  band  from  Wisconsin  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2015  album  "Family  Tomb".

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  and  after  a  few  seconds  grim  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  a  good  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  deep  growls  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Keyboards  have  a  very  dominating  sounding  presence  on  this  recording  and  the  solos  and  leads  the  band  uses  are  very  dark  and  melodic  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  with  the  faster  sections  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  some  of  the  tracks  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  samples.

  A lot  of  the  songs  on  this  recording  bring  in  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  that  has  been  absent  from  previous  recordings  and  the  music  also  brings  back  the  early  symphonic  black  metal  band  at  times  before  the  genre  became  more  mainstream  and  overproduced  and  as  the  album  progresses  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Shroud  of  Despondency  stay  away  from  the  more  progressive  and  experimental  stuff  of  previous  recordings  and  goes  back  to  their  more  atmospheric  black  metal  roots  to  close  the  chapter  of  the  band  and  this  is  suppose  to  be  there  final  album,  the  production  sounds very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  anti  religion  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Shroud  Of  Despondency  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Birthrites  Of  The  Sick"  "Where  Desolation  Is  Destiny"  and  "Blesse".  8  out  of  10.
